  • is this fast? lol

  • perfect song to practice this to = PAINKILLER

  • The problem I get is, when I try to play faster downstrokes, I get cramp in my arm, which immediately slows my movements down.

I can play the thing you do at 1:00 but 1:20 doesn't work for me. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have to practice this alot?

  • just wondering, this is not you're fastest downstroke picking right?

  • Is your plectrum soft or what?

  • Master of puppets rulezzz!

  • very informative the tip about keeping your fingers close to the tip of the pick helped me the most.

  • I only play the guitar with downstrokes.. 8 years experience.. isn't hard for me anymore..

  • Awesome technique!

  • JUST TRY PLAY THE PARTH WITH DOWN PICKING AFTER THE SOLO IN MASTER OF PUPPETS.......

    REAL FFFUCKING HARD......

    AT LEAST ALMOST......

    ;)

  • everytime i try to down pick fast i end up alt picking

  • most of this vid i was kinda jammin with u lol

  • This is exactly what I'm trying to do on master of puppets riff 1, it's a fast down picking play.

  • fuck it I can downstroke totally faster,I learned that from tom delonge..

  • I have come to the conclusion that my thumb is too fucking short for this picking technique.

  • For me the position and angle are fucking impossible.

  • How the hell do you hold the pick like that? Do you have to tilt the guitar like that? I can't get my hand into a position when holding the pick like that without striking the strings with the side instead of the front.

  • Hey... I use a Tortex Dunlop 0.88 mm pick... Is it okay as well for fast downpicking? Cz I can play Master of Puppets by alternate pickin with this pick...

  • @soccerlover703aditya It's all preference. I know someone that uses picks that feel like leaves and he can downpick easy. Just experiment with different sizes.

  • Thank you for this concise lesson!!

Very clear & covers the sublecy perfectly!

    10✰'s!

  • @LosInvasoreSconLalo I meant to say subject¡¡ lol

  • is it ok if i use the black fag from james hetfield the 1.14

  • holy shit i am holdin exactly the same pick on my hand right now O.o

  • i always accidently do triplets for some reason. any ideas to stop it?

  • For all those interested recording will begin in early Feb-2011 on two CD's. One will be Original Music Featuring JIMI FOXX on vocals, and the other will be an instrumental CD featuring me on guitar.

  • try playing master of puppets. great song to practice to.

in fact, most of metallica's songs are great practice songs.

  • @taterfamine Talking to me, or just everyone in general, cause I already whipped Master of puppets ass in one of my other vids, and I agree, Metallica is good practice music.

    Thanks for watching!

  • @robweese that was directed to pretty much anyone who was paying attention.

    AhAHAHAHDJHFSDUKFBRFE!!!

  • @taterfamine thats cause james is a god at this stuff.

  • Fuck yeah....\m/ faster down stroke.....

  • Dunlop ftw

  • I don't know how hard that is but I can play this slightly faster even when standing.

  • what a shitty guitar sound.

  • @DrumGuitarDude dude i couldn't afforrd a new guitar so i got a fender copy at second hand..:(

  • @angel2hell

    aw man..

  • sounds like the intro of master of puppets. am i right? ^^,

  • thnx brother that really helped..

  • James hetfield own this technique like dimebag said het is the god of downstroke

  • @robweese yeah, and my 4+ years exp of playing go through this transition with downstroke technique.. i find it very hard i don't know for them.

in your next video add some good advices in standing, hope you remember the time you had a breakthrough though.

    ,i'll subscribe.

  • thats a comfortable position you got there..

i can do songs like 11th hour of lamb of god ,sitting position

    my problem is when standing..

    any advice?

  • @Incantro2 You bring up an excellent point! Playing in the sitting and standing position are completely different. I would have to do a video on the standing position and analyze what I'm doing in detail. because I have been playing for so long 20+ years that I really am not aware of lots of what I'm doing now, its become second nature. I do remember that when I switched from setting to standing it was a long time getting my technique adjusted to be able to play as good standing up as sitting.

  • @Incantro2 I will add making a video lesson on playing standing up to my list. Thanks for the comment and for the idea for another video.

  • nice. but don't call this sick fast.

  • master of puppets is a really good song to practice with. it has pretty much everything in it. especially really SUPER FAST DOWN PICKING!!!!

  • Is that Derlin 500 Dunlop?

  • hah i can play faster than u i gues im pretty sick

  • one question,do you change the way you hold your pick for diferent techniques?for example you hold the pick one way for down picking and other way for galoping, thanks

  • dunlop 1.14 is my favorite

  • I didnt get it so playing downstrokes mean that you push the saites down to get a sound? And upstrokes is the opposite?

  • I love you. Seriously

  • I Know you like metallica! you have to! just like me, im obsessed with them and ive adopted their style, mostly kirk hammetts, even his love for the wah-wah pedal :P

  • @jerrodhoerner Just by watching it i can tell you like metallica without even seeing your other videos :)

  • So it is all about the wrist? and when chaging the downstrole from string to string i gets difficult to me to play it D:

  • @wanso452 Always start at whatever speed you can comfortably do it at. Then gradually increase the speed a little every week, give some time and let it sink in, it will get easier and easier, but may take a lot of patience. You cant really hit it hard and force it, you have to let your brain, muscles, and stamina build up over time. Good luck, just remember to ease into it, dont rush it.

    Hope that helps.

    -=RoB=-

  • @robweese So, playing master of puppets at 85% of orginal speed, and let's say, gradute it by 5% every week to orginal 100% it's a good idea for downstroking practise?

  • @SSSoM3 Yes, that would work. Start at the fastest you can play it and it still sounds right, without mistakes, and then like you said increase your speed every week. I cant say how long it will take, that depends on the person, and how much time they practice. The rule is to slowly increase your speed over time, be patient and it will happen!! ROCK ON!!

  • @robweese The problem is, i don't even know how to pick propeply, i mean, i have been playing guitar for somthing like year and i still think that pick is a unnecessary piece of plastic between my hand and strings. The only good thing is that i have the same pick as you and i can't blame my suckness on bad pick

  • @SSSoM3 thts what im probably going to do when i get to the master of puppets album and start covering just because im into downstrokes with alot of metallica songs.. would b a good way to get used to the feeling so you dont cramp up

  • Downpicking rules , i'm not the best guitar player out there but i can downpick pretty good IMO ;) my other guitarist is like better at har patterns ( he has hooooge hands) but he always hates me for downpicking fast stuff

  • Thanx dude!!

  • are you palm muting while hitting the chord?

  • youre really not supposed to tighten your arm muscles. it wears you out faster

  • is down picking easyer to do on different guitars, i only got one so im kind of curious if it is

  • One extremely important thing to remember is that your pick is straight on the string. You really don't want to slice like you do with alternate picking. Slicing needs noticably more movement. This may mean you're going to have the change the entire angle of your hand. It's especially hard when your guitar is hanging low like it should.

  • sounds a bit like linkin park s no more sarrow

  • @mipollo12

    what's 'sarrow'?

  • @badabumbadabing1 sorry, its no more sorrow

  • Just like anything else, all it really takes is a lot of practise. Some people take longer than others. Don't expect your downstroke speed to increase magically while you practise other stuff. If you want to play slayer or metallica, you're going to have to work on it.

Also it's much harder to go upwards on a string than to stay on the same string. Using Master of Puppets as example: The intro riff and verse riff are easy to do at 212 bpm or even higher, but the spider riff is extremely hard.

  • i still cant do this very well.. but i'll learn!

got any excerises to help me?

  • Is this technique suitable for alternate picking to?

  • when i started playing, i didnt even no bout alternate picking so i didnt know any other way of picking, so i just do it automaticaly. then i got into metallica and found out that james does it crazaly more than others. now i cant alterate pick for anything. not a bad problem tho, i sound more agresive when im playing.

  • but the angle of your hand changes when standing up and playing! it's like 10 times harder then..

  • do have any advise on how to minimize

    unwanted movement?

  • I think the best way to get minimal movements while downpicking like that is to practice your down-stroke starting at a slower tempo ofcourse. And just train yourself from that low tempo using the best and most efficiant small movements you can. Then little by little, raise the tempo as you get a faster down-stroke. Spend like 2 hours or so a day doing this. This made down-stroking alot easier for me and really helpled me out alot. My down-stroke is sky high to what it used to be now. Good luck!

  • What is the Riff in this Lession?

I want it, it sounds good!

  • Metallica-Master Of Puppets

  • no it's not

it's similar but not master of puppets

  • That riff he plays is really easy. Each of the bass notes are open low E palm muted ofcourse, and the lead notes are played on the A string starting from 7th fret, to 6th, 5th, back to 6th and then 7th. Listen to how he plays it and you'll figure the rhythm out.

  • Plec thickness doesn't really matter it's just personal preference, cause you're only hitting the string with the very tip of the plec O.o

  • leaning the pick forward helps me.. it takes alot tension off my wrists

  • Yes this does sound like Metallica Master of Puppets.

  • on Metallica's Master of Puppets, they use this technique, but after the downstrokes, you can hear a very heavy noise surrounding... somebody knows how yo perform that?

  • I listened to the song again just now, and what you are talking about is not in the technique I show here. And its not something the players are doing, it comes from using a 4-12 speaker cabinet. The large speaker cabinets with 4-12 inch speakers and a closed back, along with turning the bass up, will give the low heavy thumping you hear after every note and chord. Hope that helps..

    Let me know.

    -=RoB=-

  • make a vid on how to hold the pick

  • lmao!!!!

  • LOL!

  • I cover how to hold the pick in this video, start at 30 seconds and watch til around 40 seconds. Pause and rewind to see how I hold it. Let me know if that covers it or if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    -=RoB=-

  • make an aternet picking one

  • also make an alternet picking and what guitar and what frets on 1:50 r u holding????/

  • When you start downstrocking your hand is like fast forward...

  • Im trying to get faster at downpicking but im not making a ton of progress..the problem is that im actually left handed but im playing the guitar right handed so my weaker right hand is doing the picking, i was wondering if any1 had any advice

  • Same case as you, but I've developed my right hand into playing fast and now can use my left hand more often when I write or do anything. For violin, the bow is held in the right hand anyway, and I've been playing for 6 years now and guitar for 2. Even when I skate and get tired pushing regular, I can switch to goofy no problem.

  • Omg you rock man!!! ;D sweet

  • Wow man, you're an awesome down-stroker, I have aleways had the toughest time with my down-strokes, so thanks! Thanks a bunch!

  • Hetfield! Hail the king of downstroke!! :D

  • Hetfield, King of Downstroke picking!!!

  • True, but newcomers like the boys from Bullet For My Valentine are sick down-strokers. Just listen to the intro to "Waking The Demon"... it's ALL down-stroked, as unbelievable as that sounds. I've seen them live, and they play it even faster live. It's insanity.

  • yes actually I know that, I've seen them live to :D They're amazing!

  • James Hetfield is the king of the down stroke. Your good to man lol :D

  • damn i wish i could do it like this cause i play stuff like lamb of god and megadeth and with my alternate picking it sounds so stupid. maybe its my guitar teachers fault cuz i used to do this fine before he made me alternate pick...anyway thanks for the tips

  • When I downpick, its kinda looks like Im plucking the string, as soon as a I hit the string I take the pick up and around, I dont know if its a "correct" way of doing it but it works for me, and downpicking has always been easier than alternate picking for me, but Im practicing both, cuz I probably need to know both.

  • I have a hard time only moving my hand a little bit so I usually just alternate pick which sounds a lot sloppier than all downstrokes. I guess I just gotta practice practice practice blah blah... haha

  • LOL! Thats it, just takes practice, practice, boring practice. Stick with it long enough and you'll get it.

    Thanks,

    -=RoB=-

  • Hey is it normal to get tired of down stroking

when you're first learning how to play?

  • yes it is, but you will eventually get into a habit of doing it and there will be less stress eventually. Just practice it over and over.

  • For sure. You need to develop a technique, and try not to use your entire arm just your wrist. Your hand muscles are developing to all the speed you're exerting on them lol. Give it some practice and time.

  • hey what song is that

  • I just made that up while I was doing it. I tried to make it sound like a Metallica song, but it was just improvised.

    Thanks,

    -=RoB=-

  • I use the dunlop 2.0 mm. Is very good for alternate picking (thrash riffs), but for down picking, it's very hard to me.

  • this would be perfect for master of puppets

what guitar, pedal, and amp are you using?

  • james and kirk from metallica play with downstrokes on master of puppets. so you need it to play it :P otherwise it will sound like shit

  • That's only if you have good wrist strength like they do.

  • if i down picking too fast i sometimes alternate lol

  • Same with me LOL! One point in this vid I alternate by accident, cause I'm pushing it. LOL! Sucks getting older!

    -=RoB=-

  • awesome lesson. I am stuck at 80 bpms for months now. I have whole Seek and destroy song down except that fast part. I suck at down picking.

  • I don't remember but it took me forever to get fast, like years! LOL!

  • i do insane downstrums with a dunlop 0.73 mm works good, i tried a heavier pick for the reason of downstrumming, but returned to the .73, felt better

  • does your thumb's side touch to the strings while u r picking full downstroke??

sometimes mine touchs, i worry if it is a wrong thing

  • i hate my skills xD i can downpick faster i think (not braggin here),but i really suck at playing. since i'm used to downpicking since i got a guitar a year ago. i guess i just have to keep practicing with metallica solos at low speed hehe(it's strange i don't even know some basic chords)

  • i go faster actually, but it sucks downpicking for me. i cant up and down stroke ive always been like this.

  • It's like anything else, usually its hard to do something new or something your not used to. Try practicing alternate up and down strokes on one string, in one position as often as you can, it may take a while but your brain, and your hands will eventually synch up. Try not to think about it too much or judge yourself while your doing it, just practice it often and eventually it will happen. I'm not naturally talented so everything I do takes me lots of practice to get.

  • exactly how i do it same pick and everything

  • Thats cool. I sort of worked my way into doing it this way over time, I experimented with lots of different things and this worked out best for me.

  • what could i do if i want to do up and down stroke really fast!... for example the song ONE by METALLICA... or Fight Fire With FIRE.. by metallica!!/????... it's really hard for me to do UP AND DOWN strokes fast... i can do DOWN STROKES alright!.. but i can't do Up and Down that much!!

  • damn that pick is too thick and i can pick fast i just clicked on this i use mediums or .70-.75

  • Not really, I use a solid metal pick sometimes! LOL! This technique I'm showing is meant for those people wanting to get the most crisp, well defined, tight, punchy, leads and rythm they can. It will make recordings sound tight and punchy. I used to use thinner picks, then I heard a dude jam, and I was like how does he sound do clean and tight and pro? when I sound sloppy compared to him, we sat down and turns out it was this technique that he showed me that made the difference.

  • lol i use dunlop 95 and it still isnt hard enough

  • will dunlop .88 picks work for this?

  • It should work, give it a try and let me know how it works out for you.

  • They worked pretty good, but I think my method could use some tweaking

  • James does it perfectly with a .88, so it should work

  • WOW when you started playing like the first 3 or so notes sounded like the intro to master of puppets!

    The true challenge for downpicks!

  • I'm surprised how few lessons there are that focus is on the picking hand. Good stuff

  • i ususlly play with a thinner pick because if i use the very tip i can get very fast downstrokes..... like FIRE! lol

  • Yeah, I melted all my thin picks doing that! LOL!!!!

  • yea. i absolutely hate thick picks. i use dunlop .38's. anything else is just to stiff and gets caught up on the strings for me. but im gonna try what you got going with a thick pick and a think pick to see maybe if i should expand my pick range

  • I played with thin picks for years and then I heard a dude that was sounding like I wanted to, I talked with him and it turned out that thick picks gave me the sound and speed I was looking for, like everything else it will take a lot of time to get used to them, you have to vary your grip on them from tight to loose as you play, and that takes time to get used to.

    Thanks,

    -=RoB=-

  • SUBSCRIBED! =D

  • You gotta keep your wrist relaxed and loose. If your arm starts to tighten up and your hand gets tense slow down 10 or 15 bpm so you can relax and build your stamina. Keeping your fingers on your picking hand curled in helps a bit too for me personally but that' s not totally necessary.

  • are you alternate picking? i can even tell...i need tips for master of puppets...

  • me too

  • me three

  • I have a Master of puppets lesson vid, check it out, its on my channel.

  • I have a Master of puppets lesson vid, check it out, its on my channel.

  • wow that was pretty amazing i wish my guitar still works....NiCe!

  • I feel like a moron, i've been positioning my hand wrong doing the palm mute, thanks for that man, the only reason I have any speed is from playing Guitar Hero and I feel like an idiot because of that XD

    Great job,

    Sean.

  • So that's how you palm mute it. Thanks man, now I can practice this:)

  • your realy helpfully man, thanks. but i cant use my hand as fast as you :) what shold i do

  • Just practice as much as possible at the speed you are at now, and every once in a while try to push yourself to go a little faster. Thats what I basically did.

    Thanks for checking this out.

    -RoB-

  • when i try to downpick fast why does my arm get really tight. Also if this is basically the same question that Garcia148 asked can you still tell me

  • my arm gets really tired when i downstroke.

when i downstroke continuously, i tend to slow down. why does my arm get tired?

  • Thats normal, its like sports or lifting weights, it will take practice to build up the endurance. Try to include downstroke picking every time you practice. the more you practice it the easier it should get.

  • thanks for the help. oh and would the positioning of my picking hand make a difference?

  • mm i never tried to hold my pick like that, with the flat side of my index finger, i always hold it between the boney side of my index finger and my thumb, but it hurts my index finger sometimes, idk what to do .

  • play songs like master of puppets blackened n basically play metallicas early albums...and also lamb of gods stuff/..thats how i practiced down strokes..it killed my arm in the begining..but once u get the technique right its easy..but as robweese says u have to include down strokes in every practice session..

  • usually when you wanna do the "chugga chugga" sound while palm muting.. downstrokes makes it sounds more special. more brutal. and go the swosh the scraping between the pick and string.

  • I'm about to have strok by playing downstroke IoI

  • Are you able to alternate pick while holding the pick in that position? Mabe you could do an alt. picking lesson?

  • ahhhh..ive been paying guitar for about 3/4 years...im not bad i guess..but my picking technique is abit odd...i never alternate pick..but as i have been using downstroke for so long i have become pretty fast..but i should learn to alternate..grrr

  • Good lesson. I've had trouble with rapid downstrokes for a while.

The forearm is basically immobile while the wrist is kept relaxed and tension is directed only at the tip of the fingers holding the pick?

How to prevent the pick from spinning?

    Thanks.

  • sweet thx that helped

  • nice distortion...what pedal do you have???and what tuning???

  • is it more efficient to use this method or to use alternate picking for such quick riffs? nice job man, you're great

  • Good question. Downstroke and alternate picking are two seperate things, and give two sistinctly different sounds when used. But you are right alternate picking may be more efficient and probably a bit faster, but alternate picking sounds sloppy, all the notes run together. Downstrokes have a pause or break between each note, and each note sounds just like the last, each note alternate picked sound different than the last. I prefer the more distinct and professional sound of downstrokes.-RoB-

  • I hope that answered your question.

    Thanks,

    -RoB-

  • Alright, well said. Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it! I wanna be that good someday haha

  • yeah,my opinion is..for shredding,it's good to use alternate picking and for playing fast rhythm such as in metallica's songs..it's good to use downstroke picking

  • I agree, and thats exactly what I do.

    Thanks for the comment goldfings.

    -RoB-

  • cheers this lesson was very useful. ive been stuggling wiht playing master of puppets up to speed so wanted to check my technique was correct.

  • refusing to not let a single original you do go without expressing yourself through the best solo you can do that fits that particular piece of music. The guitar solo is the hallmark of Rock and should never die!

    Keep the dream alive!

    Thanks,

    -RoB-

  • Thanks to everyone! Im so glad you are all getting some benefit from all the work I put into these lesson videos. The 1980's were filled with incredible guitar players! and then music took a turn for the worse, guitar players became drummers with strings! LOL! no more killer complicated leads, but now the guitar player is making a comeback, thank GOD! I hope I inspire all you beginning and up and coming guitar players to do the right thing and express yourselves through the guitar by

  • Word and thank you.
