By the way, the documentary on Mae West I just watched said she was just slightly over 5 feet tall ... so Mae was short. She looked tall in her movies because the documentary also said she wore 7" (yes I said 7") heels under her gowns. If you look at all her old photos, never do you see her feet because her long gowns covered it. Mae had mirrors on her bedroom ceiling and when asked why she would often reply "so I can see how I'm doing". Now that's a woman not afraid of her sexuality. Love her!
Just finished watching Mae West Intimate Portrait on Lifetime. Mae West was the epitome of sex goddess way back in her time well before Marilyn Monroe. Mae reminded me of a black woman with her sassiness, her walk, her talk. No other white woman even to this day can match her sex appeal. The dance she did in her act was the shimmy which Mae said she learned at a little hole in the wall jazz club on the southside of Chicago. That confirms that she got that 'umph' from watching black women.
Mae west wasnt black, her father was white from the states and her mother was Bavarian. West was born Mary Jane West in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York, delivered at home by an aunt who was a midwife. She was the eldest surviving child of John Patrick West and Matilda "Tillie" Doelger (also known as Matilda Delker Doelger), who had emigrated with her family from Bavaria to the United States in 1886. West's parents married on January 18, 1889, in Brooklyn.
Not sure why its important what 'race' Mae West was. The important tthing is, she was really amazing, sexy, talented and paved the way for other women actresses. Simply amazing
That was so cool! I still think Mae West was the best thing to happen to Hollywood and her influence is so under rated. She's got it all over Mad Donna!
@ClassicTVful SO TRUE! Hollywood actresses today are stick thin, no charm, no grace. Mae was 5 feet tall with at least 130 pounds of meat on her, and to think she was a sex icon!
America is so fucked when we can't even watch this photo montage without a bunch of assholes (from both sides) making an issue of race. Piss off and let me enjoy the lady.
idk if she had black in her or not. but i guess alot of ppl feel she did cause of those serious cuves she had! i know white women can have curves, but i don"t usually see those type of curves on a white woman!
Mae West's father was about as WASP, anglo as a man can get. I am VERY close to the black community my entire life. I have also studied the life of Mae West for 30 years now. Mansfield had tan and full lips. Big deal. She wasn't black either. Channing I can see, and in fact her grandfather was black. But West, I have about 12,000 untretouched candid photos of and decades of research. The West's COULD have passed for Ruussian at best.
Mae West was German/Irish. She was not Jewish as everyone giddily claims and not black either. There was absolutely no one Southern in her family, so any grandparents (who would have been from other countries) would have had any opportunity for "interracial relations" back then. West liked black men from time to time, hired all black help and loved the Blues---but that does not make her black. She was (drum roll) an all American white Protestant woman. A brilliant woman--no exotic ancestry.
@nonbreeder that's wrong, Mae's father passed for White, like many Blacks at that time. Trust, Blacks can tell their own kind better than Whites, which is why it's called passin', because Whites cannot identify the features (like you), but Blacks can. She has them as does Jayne Mansfield and Carol Channing. These were all women who were either passing or didn't know of their ancestry
I had the pleasure and privilege of living down the hall from Miss West for several years in the sixties while I attended USC. Beyond the publicity, she was a great lady who helped many actors to careers they might not have had. Personally, she was a good neighbor though, obviously, not one from whom I ever borrowed a cup of anything. I did attend a seance in her apartment which was interesting. She was very slight of stature but generous of spirit.
@AmberSumer -It's possible that her paternal grandfather was an African American who passed for white. Her paternal grandmother was Irish. Her mother may have been a Bavarian Jew. I got this from the Wikipidia article.
@Papillonmuscogee If jazzy mannerisms are inherent to African Americans then how do you explain Steve Urkel? :D But seriously, kids adopt the mannerisms of whatever culture they're raised in, regardless of race. That explains Bon Qui Qui.
@Papillonmuscogee You're right, it's a matter of opinion. Here's my personal experience: I lived with a Korean American for 3 years. She was 100 percent Korean. She came to the US when she was 1 month old. She didn't have *any* mannerisms that would identify her as Korean. Also, I minored in anthropology and formed the opinion that race is much more of a social concept than a genetic reality. There are more genetic variations within ethnic groups than between different ethnic groups. Best wishes
My grandfather Tommy Paul was a world champion boxer and was in L.A fighting for 1-2 yrs.
Mae West loved boxers...so they hired my grandfather to be in the movie- you will see him skipping rope in the background in the gym scene and also you will see him come across the camera skipping rope. I think he was in a couple more of her films too.
You can google Tommy Paul to see who I am talking about.
this tribute to the saucy and sexual Mae West is teriffic. Mae was such an icon during the 1930s along with many of her predecesors.
As a matter of fact, if Mae West were still alive to "come up and see this sometime" , I think she would've been very pleased to see herself immortalized in this!

She was "voluptuous" with an hour-glass figure and she was tall-she frequently was taller than the leading man. What a real woman should look like!

Hollywood couldn't handle Mae West today. She was sexy, smart, and talented. They wouldn't know what to do with her...

@theyforcedmetosignup They would have made her lose weight too since she doesn't look like an anorexic totem pole with two watermelons on top.

@RetroJenny In the best referenced bio (E. W. Leider) of Mae West, her weight listed on medical records is 5'3".
Google "mae west shoes," to see her 9 and 10 inch platforms. A 10 in pair is on display at the Hollywood museum in Hollywood.
