Thanks for posting! I was just at the summit (8/21/10) and didn't get a photo of the marmot, so I'm glad to see this one. It LOOKS like the same marmot (nose stripe). Could it be? Anyone know how long they live?
I climbed Whitney in 1971. Out of a group of 8 only 2 made the summit.(My faithful dog "Shadowfax" made it to the summit ridge but had to turn back). Coming down we took the climbers col express and glissaded to the valley in minutes, bypassing the 99 switchbacks.
A Ranger caught us at the bottom and wanted us to HIKE BACK TO THE SUMMIT RIDGE orbe fined. Said we "cut the swqitchbacks". We tried to explain we had used the col and were only returning to the trail but he was a hard headed sphincter. In the end we hiked back up about 3 switchbacks and turned back down.
Wow 12000 ft mountains seem huge compared to the ones around here. Id like to go out west someday then I can say ive climbed something higher than 6000 feet.
On top of the Sierra's.

A friendly marmot? Who woulda thunk it. They are usually like bridge trolls. I luv 'em, but you shall not pass!
