I was on the kittyhawk in 100 ft swells and hardly felt a thing. I worked on the 03 level and occasionally a chair would roll across the floor but that was about it. I was also on a pakistani fishing boat in 50 ft swells. now that made me barf.
The US has at least eleven of these boats and no money to run them. I wonder what the folks who used to be called 'Middle Class Americans' who are living in tents on the fringes of the cities of their former repossesed homes think of that now?
Looks like they have a lot of cleaning in that helicopter. Salt will be everywhere, great for corrosion. Will take a few days before this one is operational again. The F-18 just needs an engine wash and outside cleaning, but it will be fine.
All I know is the sea state is pretty high and the Kitty Hawk is 81,000 tons and 1071 feet long. Somewhere out there not too far away are some tin cans that are 366 feet long and weight in at 2300 tons or so.
I've served on both and I'll take a can any day. I guess it's like the Marines vs. the Army. Ones lean and mean the other fat and slow. Did I really say that?
No. There are always small ships along to act as a screen/protection for the carrier from attack by submarines, air, or other surface ships. Usually several destroyers (tin cans), a cruiser, and most times an attack submarine.
I saw the Kitty Hawk pull into Pearl Harbor a few times when I was stationed at COMSUBPAC Staff there in the early 1970s. She was not nuclear powered, but she was a very large and proud ship.
Considering the flight deck is 60 feet up ......that's rock and roll....We lost planes over the side during typhoons in WestPac in spite of them having Hurricane tie down chains !
That was simply breathtakingly beautiful! If I knew it wasn't gonna capsize or toss me overboard that would have to be one dang kick ass ride in one of those floating rescue air ups!!! Dang that was great looking!!!
Never got 90 foot waves, but got 70-80 foot waves, in a 50 footer yacht, South Atlantic, 45 knots steady and striking almost 60 at some points. Well, let me say that it looked totally different from my humble point of view, but of course, there was not much to see except water (most of the time), the deck (way less time) and the other 9 fellow members of the crew (barely invisible).
@RapTheNationalAnthem You do know that the longest ship on deadliest catch is like 200 feet long correct? This bad girl is 1069 feet long. A 90 foot wave is less than %10 of her length. So you better believe it because it is totally true.
The largest wave ever surfed was estimated to be 77 feet high at Cortes Bank off the coast of California in Jan of 2009.Given the long history of the earth and the frequency of seismic events it is probable that there have been even bigger waves and that there will be in the future."
The Norwegian Dawn cruise ship was hit with a 70 foot wave in 2005, In 1933 the USS Ramapo reliably measured a 112 foot wave. In February 2000 Scientific instruments on the British research vessel Rockall recorded individual waves up to 95.47 feet (29.1 meters) with average waves 60.7 feet (18.5 meters).Computer models can produce theoretical waves to 219 feet (67 meters).
"The biggest wave ever recorded was in Lituya Bay on the southern coast of Alaska on July 9, 1958. It was caused by 40 million cubic yards of ice and dirt shaking loose during an earthquake. It was 1740 feet high and described as a splash wave. The European Space Agency detected more than ten rogue waves measuring higher than 82 feet (25 meters) in a three week period in 2001.
Three earthquakes have been predicted in the last month and they've all come true. The author now predicts the next earthquake to happen within the next 2 weeks. Google and read "Vancouver Island Earthquake Was Predicted Last Week and Here's Another Prediction".

As a certified Airframe and powerplant mechanic. salt water is the worst thing for any part of an aircraft. salt way has such a corrosive property it is amazing. they should have put them below deck or to the rear of the carrier,
Mike's right about the bow up and down thingy.... even if the bow was 90 feet high, it still wouldn't make the waves 90 feet because they come over the bow.... still an inoressive shot though... :-) wouldn't wanna be there with my 40 foot long 4 foot high bow.... lol
