  • They sung it for one of the Xmas specials too

  • Roy Clarke is one of the best sitcom writers who can make you laugh and cry never offensive . It a shame the BBC became obsessed with youth and being cynical Last of the Summer Wine gave voice to the older generation and to those who prefer gentle humor and beautiful countryside.

  • for a sitcom, this is one of the few scenes that made me cry, very well done, still funny, yet touching... they don't make T.V that good anymore if you don't mind me saying.

  • R.I.P Bill Owen

  • I like the way he would throw his head back and laugh....

  • @baldwonder987 Huh!?!? Cleggy's gone too?! When?! He was a live the last I checked and that was shortly after you posted this 3 months ago .....

  • @ldyhawk549 I never said that if you read properly you will see its a reply to me!

  • this was always funny because you knew those miscreants would be getting up to all sorts .

  • Where is the school? Sure it's been used in Heartbeat also!

  • Thank you, georgieboy56. I have just finished watching LOTSW Seasons 1 - 16, which are all I can get on DVD right now. Watching a couple of episodes at night just before bedtime helps me sleep well and have pleasant dreams.

From watching all these episodes spanning 20+ years, I have tremendous respect for the production values. They could have cut corners, but they didn't. Roy Clarke is a genius, in my opinion, and Alan J. W. Bell is a Director and Producer of the highest possible skill.

  • I love this programme, I've been watching it for as long as I can remember, I can't belive the last episode is on sunday....at the end of that episode i'll be very sad.

  • I hope the put this on the last ever episode on the 29th of august

  • at the end of the last ever episode there should play this song and show the stars wat are no longer here be a fitten final

  • Can't believe it's been 10 years since Bill Owen passed away the man was brilliant in the role of Compo hearing that sung version of the theme in this video took me back not afraid to admit then as now i have a tear in my eye sleep well Bill sadly missed by all your fans

  • Two things have always puzzled me:

    Why was Compo so called?

Why was he never referred to by name in the series, but just "him"?

  • @cottonwhiskersuk Compo is short for Compensation, in other words someone who is always on unemployment or disability..a workshy guy :-)

he is refered to by name from a number of people, Blamire, the first "third man" would call him by his surname "Simmonite". In Series 3, there's a 2 parter set in Scarborough, which features Compo's nephew, and he always calls him "Uncle Bill".

  • @geordieboy56 actually in this case it stands for Compisition

  • @geordieboy56 I think there was mention of being in the army at one point, so Compo could also refer to Composite rations the troops got

  • There has not been a time that i have not shed a tear when i have played this video, it has been done with such dignity and feeling , there will never ever be another person like our old compo, bless his wellies.

  • i can't believe there are only two other people in my class that watch this

  • is the guy who played wesly still in it or has he died as well

  • @CybermeN100 he's gone too

  • is the guy who played wesly still in it or has he died as well

  • Ivy still in the new series, from the start with clegg

(Only those two are still alive from the original)

  • @babytrexgirl13 actually edie & wes pegden's son in law & daughter are still in it .... they're not from the very, very beginning like Clegg & Compo (Nora too), but almost .... sorta like Howard, Pearl & Marina .....

  • did anyone watch the new series i think its only cleggy from that era now coz nora batty died RIP all the cast

  • its so beautiful there has not been a time i have not had a tear for old compo when i watch this it really get to me , i would have loved to have walked with the three of them on there journeys of fun and laughter.

  • @jackieskatdawn it still gets to me too

  • That was so lovey Thank You

RIP the wounderfull cast who have gone but never forgotton x

  • In his honor: Whos buying the next pint? Ay up is that Nora?

  • Goodby Compo! RIP!

  • When i die i want this theme to be played for my funeral. i love last of the summer wine 'RIP Compo' god bless...

  • Same here Resident. Its a beautiful version of the theme song.

  • Agree with redredreds100, lovely to see that pic of Sid. John Comer R.I.P.

The song is available on Spotify, sung by the Mike Sammes Singers.

  • please could you tell me the title of the song

  • im at home nw watch last off the summer wine and it compo funeral it verry sad 2 watch ? R I P compo

  • i love last of the summer wine shame compo has past away he was the main part =[ they have a statu of him now out side the cafe i really do mis him

  • when i watched the epsiode and when it showed that song it made me all emtional. RIP Compo

  • one of those clips that makes you stop and think, i really love the lyrics in this clip and I feel they give you the chance to pause and reflect, in terms of the show what really touches me is how Ivy looks at Sids photo and you just know that despite of all the rows they had,, she loved him very much

  • yes, a great ide to do that, and your comment is spot on

  • I still love this series even after a lot of the stars have passed away it still manages to make me smile. Nice clip of sid near the end

  • that really is a wonderful clip, of Ivy, and pic of Sid

  • thanks kidrocker82 for your kind sincerity my brother was an ardent fan over these he would watch them over and over again

  • no problem, im a ardent fan too, have a gud day

  • I'm with your brother, I love this show, so simple ans so clever, god i miss compo.

  • my twin brother used to watcththese over and over againhe said when i have gone i want this played at my funeral he died in febuary and he got his wish rest in peace brother.

  • sorry to hear about your brother, may he rest in peace

  • I miss Compo and the way he would roll down the hill every bloody episode.

  • i miss compo harrasing nora batty and his lucky welsh ferret lol

  • lol that was good!

  • I love the way Alan JW Bell revisits the shot of the kids at school from the last time the lyrics were sung, 16(?) years earlier in Getting Sam Home.

  • Yes, it's very nice (and the same school too)...actually, he revisits another shot, by opening on the Clocktower (and if you compare the 2, it's shot from exactly the same angle).

  • Absolutely! Nice attention to detail for something that no-one would ever see - we're probably the first people who have ever noticed it!

  • I Love this Comedy Classic.

    Long may it Continue.

  • Looking at (Pearl) Juliette Kaplan's website, the series is definately finished. They produced a series for this year and they're not apparently even showing it. I hope that they change their minds and show it and hopefully then show repeat episodes from 1999 onwards which UK Gold don't at the moment. UK Gold only show to the end of 1998. I'm not sure why?

  • Brilliant, it reminds me of my grandad we used 2 sit n watch it together

  • Bill surely looked down and smiled at this. Thanks for the laughs Bill.

  • Oh goodness--this makes me all teary. Just wonderful--thanks for posting it.

  • I'm sure Clegg and Truly will have made sure that nobobdy as scruffey as Compo came to the funeral. (This was mentioned in the episode 'Flower Power Cut')

  • I always thought it should have words, I'd hummed that tune for years and years, it was awesome when they started singing it in that episode. Maybe it always had words tho..idk.

  • even my death is far away i wouold like this played at my Funeral

  • If it were to be MY funeral, I'd feel to have a tune as beautiful as this, if not this itself, played for me.

  • Should have at least ten stars to rate this one. The last of the best shows.

  • i can't believe its been ten years since I watched this for the first time

  • because it's only been 8.

  • Episode #277, originally aired on 24th August 2008, was named "Its never been ten years".

Past clips starring Compo were included to commemorate the tenth anniversary.

  • I've been waiting for so many years for this to appear on the net.
