I love horses but know very little about them.. can anyone clue me in as to why on earth would the guy purposely scare this little horse? Like what would that accomplish?
After the guy left the woman on that horse alone he went and came back with that bag and it was only then if you watch carefully the horse turns looks at this white noisy bag then gets scared that's when he takes off after feeling no direction like u said he then stops sees this guy and the bag tucked under his arm and thinks flee, don't blame the horse at all everyone and everything there made me scared watching it.
Even if the horse isn't wasn't green what is thst rider going to learn by them tight circles straight away? Until you find yotu balance point you can't ride tight cicrles and that man is making that poor horse circle so tightly. Its set up for failure. I'll admit i couldn't watch it all i didn't want to see any more of the tight cicrles the lack of balance on both horse and rider and the lack of care for that horse. He only looks about 2/3 bless him.
OMg this vidoe horrified me iam 16 and know better i feel sorry for this horse i jsut got my young horse over being terrified of people and whips he used to bolt if he saw a whip even if another rider in our group had one he would pannic where it got to the point he ran through fences actual horse jumps barbwise fences and electric fences to get away now he is fine and it took me 3 years to get him sounds and can have little kids riding him, these people like in this video make me sick.!
I agreed with everything you said during the video.
I think it is really really hard for a newbie to be able to judge a "professional" horse trainer or instructor. Some of them talk themselves up so well and seem so confident... I really admire the woman for sending you her video to be critiqued. I really hope she and her horse end up in better hands.
You provided an excellent narration of the video. It's easy to see by this example how someone new to horses can think they're with an "expert" when really they're with someone who is putting them in danger.
when you first said to the link was in description i went to it and when he tried sacking out the horse i said that all he did was scare the shit out of the horse and didn't release the pressure am i right or wrong tell me please

This video was painful to watch! It also really mad me angry at both the naive and ignorant rider and that moron of a "trainer". That animal was treated disrespectfully and cruelly and whoever that guy is he should be treated in a like manner and let's see how he likes it. If this is the way he regularly treats horses I hope someone puts a stop to his inhumane treatment quickly!
I'm sorry for the horse. That poor animal will end up being one of those "badly behaved" horses that everyone usually blames on the horse, except in this case its because, frankly, the shitty trainer.
Whats staggering to me, its not just the horse looking confused & uncomfortable, but the rider, the person leading and then you add into the equasion alot of by-standers and even from a human point of view, if I'm trying to accomplish something i aint dont before I dont want a load of watchers!
Glad to hear the respect you give the person who send this in. Unfortunately all the spectators were thinking this is going well until the rider fell off.
he ambushed the horse with that bag. the horse just got through bucking out of fear and didn't even have a chance to relax, and the bag was shoved in his face, and it was very sloppy. that was not sacking out or distraction, it was ambush. HOWEVER... at least the trainer is getting his hands dirty instead of sitting around watching youtube videos. it was probably just an infamous moment in an otherwise good horseman. mistakes are one way to learn, albeit not the best way :)
@puresimplenatural heheheh :) i watched every single rick gore video and right now i'm going through them ALL again in order and saving the ones i like keepvid.com i didnt sleep last night which sucks but im just gonna sit back all day watching rick's adorable horsies :)

@horseawareness omg im one of those people that wants horses but cant have them and when i watched this video, even though i dont know much about horses i even think its cruel, i love your videos i learn heaps from them. one day i hope that i can own horses and understand them like you do :)
@puresimplenatural I made the original video private because it had the trainer's name in it and this was starting to be focused on him. I don't want that to be the lesson people learn here...to blame the trainer. I want people to learn what disaster looks like before it strikes...no matter who is involved and to learn what is best for the horse.
@sazcorp Okay, I get that. I got heavy on the trainer because out of the three of you, he was the one with the most experience. I'm personally not hating on the guy. I'm not going to judge him solely from a 8 minute video and only expressed an opinion based on what little information I could get from watching it. It was a learning experience and I'm glad you've shared it.
This is a very patient horse IMO.. it is not a large horse (look at the guy on the ground...he is taller than the horse and it's not a very mature horse overall) it is not an experienced horse, it is not a confident horse and yet this horse is not over-reacting to how afraid it really is. Good animal with tons of potential here IMO. It seems this horse was just worked too hard, too fast.
@Elsworth01 I totally agree with you. Fiona is a Polish Arabian according to her owner. There's many comments about how well she's done considering everything going on.
This video shocked me....I felt very bad for that horse. Rick, why did they have the rope tied to his back leg at the beginning? Or maybe a better question is why would anybody tie a rope to a horses back leg like this? I do not understand, and haven't seen this done, especially not in such a situation.
@Equestrian08 : tying to back leg a form of sacking out, I talk about in my Hobble video. I don't do it or tell people to do with a green rider or any rider for that matter.
@chuckmcdonaldhorses Yes, the whole trainer/clinician industry probably HAS gotten too big because NOBODY will take responsibility for any consequences and pretty much ANYONE can be a 'professional'. I am NOT saying that sazcorp doesn't hold her piece in this situation, but I can not be convinced that the trainer should not share the blame. In the end, this is how I see it:
POOR HORSE! It would have been fine if they were in a nice quiet arena, with only two people and a advanced rider on his back. No mayhem like this! p.s i like this you should do it more :)
@chuckmcdonaldhorses How backwards this thinking is! Really!! Yes, sazcorp had unrealistic goals. The trainer should have recognized this and gave a mighty 'Whoa!' and stopped the session before it even started. The trainer should have used his experience and encouraged a more sensible approach. In the end, he took the challenge whether by pressure, greed or pride. He still made the decision to put a green rider on a green horse when he could have declined and explained why.
just an observation but the guy on the ground is limping! maybe thats how he got a green rider to get on...bye saying ouch im hurt can you get on cause maybe he knew the horse would do this....just an observation lol
***NOTICE: It's about learning so we can help horses. Please don't hate or bad mouth comments to where it gets personal. We all see things differently, this is not to hate anyone but to see good and bad so you know the difference. I could easily blame this horse or rider or the stupid plastic bag. Take this for knowledge so you can help your horse.
Why in the world would you put a green rider on a green scared horse. The horse world is full of idiots. The trainers take YOUR life in their hands. How about a seasoned lesson horse and a trainer who can recognise horse behavior......Thank you Rick......It is making a difference.....I watch the head tail and allow my horse to be able to figure out things....worst thing in yanking on their face...most experienced riders dont get that either. Thanks for the free education.
The trainer, if he was any good, should have assessed the situation and not allowed you on the horse, neither you or the horse was ready, the trainer did not look like he knew what he was doing, he was not behind the drive line, he was pulling the horse around instead of driving it, he had no idea of how to change direction and kept getting fouled up in the lead rope, the final insult to the horse was the plastic bag on a stick used on an animal that was already over stressed.
@puresimplenatural Better, but we still have a long road ahead of us. My main thing I need to work on is controlling my own fear. She's lunging over poles, moving cows from the lunge line she gets ridden about 3-4 times per week.
Rick - what are your views on those who can ride bridleless? I have always admired those who can get a horse to go any direction they want without reins. I'm a big fan of less is more. Obviously those riders use their bodies to move the horse, so would you not advise people to do this then without the safety of a neck strap/reins?
@SexyHaras : anyone can ride bridleless or bitless, it takes time, confidence and understanding. I will try and do a video about it, one of many on my list. :)
boy oh boy, you can sugar coat and butter this up any way you want but that was some of the worst so called training I have seen, there was no direction for the horse, the guy was in the wrong place most of the time, does he even know what a drive line is, at the end of the video he looks like he is about to be wrapped up in the lead rope, terrible work, the horse was nowhere near ready for this rider and she was not ready for the horse, once again, the horse gets the bad name.
@sazcorp : I don't want you to blame him, but I would hope looking back that you would not do that again and now can see how and why that is not the best way for anyone.
Hi Rick, I appreciate these last videos, the gymkhana series and this one. They show so much about things that people do wrong just because they don’t know better. At the same time they help me to avoid mistakes! I do not have a trainer, it’s hard to get one around here, so I have to find out by myself. Pages like yours are the best sources for me. One of the best hints I’ve got from the gymkhana stuff was to watch for tail swishing! Now I s review some of my vids. Thanks
@chuckmcdonaldhorses : I am with you Brother, I don't like people that blame trainers for all horse issues, don't like blaming horses,I am tough on riders, haters & blamers but I have to call it like I see it,I try and be a voice for the horse and if it comes down to taking the horse's side or a human's side,I will pick the horse every day of the week and twice on Sunday. It's all good, not my intent to ruin this guy,but I think this video has teaching and learning potential. Not trying to hate :)
@chuckmcdonaldhorses : lol, I think you have your furry boots on and are being too nice and forgiving since you like & respect the guy. Would you have got on this horse and allowed him to do what he did? I think not, so you may think he did the best he could, but his best would not get me in that saddle in that situation. I am not saying this guy is bad or mean, I am saying he did not set the situation up to succeed, risked the riders safety, taught the horse bad lesson. That is what i saw.
@puresimplenatural : Hey don't be sorry bud, you have some valid points and I assure you if everything I did with a horse was filmed there would lots of footage of stupid things that someone could talk smack about me. I take shit every day by putting out my vids from people that know, from those that think they know and from those that don't have a clue, but I try and keep my eye on ball, for me- it is that I think I help more horses than I hurt and for that I keep taking the shit. :) cont:
@horseawareness : No one is perfect (except me when I talk about pink), lol, but if this guy is really a true horsemen, he would look at this and agree that he set this horse up to fail and set this rider up to fail. It was a mistake and the horse and rider paid and he has to pay a little with some humility, then he got the best deal of the three. I say this a lot, the horse tells me if I or someone else is a good horseman, not reputation or resume or what people say, the horse never lies.
at chuckmcdonald - this man does not look in anyway 'a very good horseman' to me. Sure he may train horses and i'm sure he knows alot but anyone that puts a person and horse in this position is STUPID!!!!!!!! Why on earth would you leave the girl wih no reins and no one holding the horse dont take a 'horseman' to figure out whats gnna happen next.I'm not even gonna say anything about the plastic bag because i'll start ranting - stupid human !
@chuckmcdonaldhorses : You are right it is very easy to armchair, but to try and justify putting someone in danger so you can make a living is no more than a thief or crook saying the same thing, they are just trying to make a living. It is wrong, it sets the person up to get hurt and sets the horse up to get labeled for a life of misery. Nice that you speak up and defend the trainer, who defends the horse? If that rider could never walk again, would it still be OK to do what people want?
@olliethekitty : ummm? I may agree with what you think, but over-weight people have a right to enjoy horses, but when they depend on someone and are not given good advice or helped in the right way, then I am not sure just saying simply "fat people".She may be large & I say it is much harder to learn if you are bigger - than if you know and then get bigger. This is not a "fat" issue as much as a long list of bad decisions, advice & poor choices. This should be about learning not personalizing.
youre right rick. and the lady below me pointed out that the woman is on a diet now and taking lessons, so props to her for wanting to make a change. i wish that was the norm!
@olliethekitty If you glance at the owner's blog, she writes this,
"The bottomline on this experience; I was too green, the horse was too green. The horse was too thin and fast, I was too fat and slow. However, some good did come from my massive wipeout. I started taking riding lessons and got myself on a diet to lose weight."
This is a rescue horse and it's a good example of great intentions with some hard lessons :)
good that shes on a diet, it shows shes committed to changing herself to better her horsemanship. its just something personal i guess i hate to see because i see it too often...aside from those twiggy little english riders all i see is overweight women who are too lazy to care for their horse/ride it in the winter (which lasts about 6 months here and is very harsh) so the horse sits ALL winter and come spring the horse is out of shape along with the rider and its just a mess
@olliethekitty Yes, I understand what you are saying. The last time I was on a horse, I was overweight and out of shape and it was definitely a lot more strenuous than when I was doing more advanced riding as a teenager. And that's just my experience - who knows what my trusty mount was thinking! Poor horse... I'm just glad I had somewhat of a decent seat still and didn't bounce and flop around too much ;)
Wow! Those people are clueless. To just leave the rider there on a very green horse without reins! I wouldn't sit on a horse of any age or experience without reins.
I think anyone with a sense of logic could have predicted the outcome of this. This horse was just not ready for any rider at this point, let alone an inexperienced rider. Seems both the horse and rider were given 'Crash Course 101', pun intended!
never put a green rider, on a green horse, it's best to learn from an experienced horse, when you hear the audio, and when the horse is running around the man was like ok what ever, sure she did do things wrong but as a trainer he should have helped her to, thats part of getting one to help make you better like noticed the sturrips where to long ect, a rider is as only good or as bad as the trainer

FAT PEOPLE RIDING SMALL HORSES
i dont understand!
olliethekitty 9 months ago
@olliethekitty I don't either. I'm 5'8" and 240 and I don't feel that a 16hh+ horse is even big enough for me.
maimingbetty 9 months ago

@horseawareness I was fat and the horse was underweight, but thank you for being kind. :)

@puresimplenatural
good that shes on a diet, it shows shes committed to changing herself to better her horsemanship. its just something personal i guess i hate to see because i see it too often...aside from those twiggy little english riders all i see is overweight women who are too lazy to care for their horse/ride it in the winter (which lasts about 6 months here and is very harsh) so the horse sits ALL winter and come spring the horse is out of shape along with the rider and its just a mess
olliethekitty 9 months ago
@olliethekitty Yes, I understand what you are saying. The last time I was on a horse, I was overweight and out of shape and it was definitely a lot more strenuous than when I was doing more advanced riding as a teenager. And that's just my experience - who knows what my trusty mount was thinking! Poor horse... I'm just glad I had somewhat of a decent seat still and didn't bounce and flop around too much ;)

Wow! Those people are clueless. To just leave the rider there on a very green horse without reins! I wouldn't sit on a horse of any age or experience without reins.

The horse is obviously confused!!! I believe it would have done much better with better situations. Stupid stupid stupid people :(

I think anyone with a sense of logic could have predicted the outcome of this. This horse was just not ready for any rider at this point, let alone an inexperienced rider. Seems both the horse and rider were given 'Crash Course 101', pun intended!
puresimplenatural 9 months ago
never put a green rider, on a green horse, it's best to learn from an experienced horse, when you hear the audio, and when the horse is running around the man was like ok what ever, sure she did do things wrong but as a trainer he should have helped her to, thats part of getting one to help make you better like noticed the sturrips where to long ect, a rider is as only good or as bad as the trainer
