In NYC I attended the opening of "Robeson", a one-man show starring James Earl Jones. I was sitting in the orchestra seats as a guest of the producer.. There was a woman sitting in front of me with all this hair and I had to constantly shift in my seat to see the play. On either side of the woman were two huge guys dressed in suits and to her left was a young kid. When intermission came, the woman turned suddenly and looked at me. It was Miss Diana Ross. Michael Jackson was the kid!
This woman is simply amazing. How could someone that is so loved by the world still feel so insecure? When you think about it, superstars are just like you and me. We have our bad days and our good days. That's what makes Diana Ross so human.
@Chasenip , part of that is due to the record producers rarely letting her belt it out or making her belt it out on her albums or other recordings. Back in those days, her live concerts would blow you away because of her magnificent voice, powerful but subtle where it needed to be, articulate ,and graceful, kind of like Diana.. He he he
I have always loved Diana Ross her style, grace and determination s are forever. She is truly a living legend, no she's not perfect...but who is? Ske is so well spoken. Peace and blessings too you Miss. Ross.
I met her handed her roses..she kissed me..I told her I loved her, she said.."I love you too"..we laughed a little we hugged and then I kissed her neck and have not been the same since!!!!
yeh partially but she refused to ever endorse anything. that was the thinking back then. Streisand & the like, none would endorse products. it was considered tacky for a big star to do so. They wanted to protect their image and be known only for their talent. my have things changed. and a tv comerical was out of the question.
@yurherenow LOL! Yes, seems quite odd considering the way things are today, with Beyonce in her gold mini skirts and what not shakin' her fanny and selling everything from cable access to Cover Girl make up
One thing for sure judging from all of your comments, Diane sure has an intelligent group of fans. I must say that I certainly appreciate the fact that she always gives credit to her hometown Detroit. I must also add that dispite all of the criticism, I always loved her singing...It always made me happy inside and proud to be a fellow Detroiter.
I for one, can't understand why her singing has always been the source of so much criticism, especially considering how successful she was with her singing.
criticism of her singing too was a recent development. Ross singing came under fire when the loud mouth singers took center stage. the ones who had an attitude like they were telling you off when they sang. Ross never got into the over singing that is common for today's singers. neither did she try to gospelize every piece of music tht was in front of her face. so she was criticized. but that was a relatively recent development.
@loMJveable bEYONCE does whather Mother tells her and bascically has become her Mom's puppet... well recently she has started to break out, but bey used to let her mother make all her creative choices in style and presentation for the stage.
I'm really stunned by her beauty here. Would have much rather seen her in make up and hair color ads, than Beyonce. I'm surprised she never did any of that, probably because she wasn't a free agent at the time. But she didn't do it after Motown either
@TheReturnOfStephan1 , I know, but my point is she should have done those kinds of things much earlier in her career. It would have been more appropriate. I forgot about her Simplicity pattern contracts (for people into making their own clothes)
Not necessarily. Her fan base has aged along with her, with their kids & grandkids in tow. According to MAC, one of the reasons for the line's success was the idea that if it made a woman in her 60's look that good, imagine what it could do for the customers. That works on a far more real level than some 20 - something bleating about the make-up hiding her non-existant "wrinkles".
That said, had a major make-up company offered her a promotional contract in the earlier portion of her career, I'd like to think that she'd have agreed. Until the rise of Naomi Sims (upon which some, if not much, of "Mahogany" is based), most make-up firms didn't even get the base colors correct for Black skin. Miss Sims had to be flown to Japan, of all places, to show them which colors to use, etc., after she received one of her first contracts.
The only person who can truly determine what Diana Ross "should" do or what is "appropriate" for her to do is Diana Ross, as only we can determine what's best for us. What others think of our decisions is irrelevant.
I just can never look at Barbra Walters the same after her little "scandal". She was always prying into everyone else lives but she was doing dirt. It's quite mesmerizing.
To my understanding, In her biography she released earlier this year she finally talks about an affair she was having with a married gentlemen who happened to be a politician. It was over 30 years ago and she told it all to sell her book. The gentlemen's wife didn't even know about it until the book release.
It's her job as an interviewee to conduct a good interview, to give the viewers what they want to hear. I think Miss Walters does a great job at breaking the shield of perfection that celebrities uphold in their public image. This is good, as it makes celebrities seem more of an average human. It's her job. And she does it great.
She is so much like her husband(MJ)lol! Notice how she giggles and gets embarrassed when Barbra asks if she is dating anyone. That is exactly how Michael would've reacted. She seems so nice, shy and reserved as opposed to all of the negetive comments we always hear. She is a very classy woman who also likes to have fun. The kind of woman that Michael wanted.
YOU JUST GOT TO LOVE THIS WOMAN, she's simply AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL with her hair pull back. Those little divas we have today are NOTHING comparing to THE REAL DIVA MISS DIANA ROSS, she's so elegant and classy. I really admire her, she's a STRONG woman after all she went through during her life and her children should be proud to have her as a mother.
In my humble opinion Michael and Diana do not have any similarities at all. I wish Michael wuold have been as tough as Diana....so that interviewers like this person would have treated him kindly.MJ was a polite person..too polite.
Diana Ross, The Supremes and the hole MOTOWN-Family breaks down barriers between black and white. It was a revolution, to see The Supremes at "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the early 1960s, yes it was! Diana later became an international Superstar. She was and will always be ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATED WOMAN ON THE PLANET.
"I'm proud of myself" :-). She is so natural, sincer, truthful, straight, candid and genuine. I'd like to have some chance to speak with her. She's amazing!!!
Thank you so much for posting this. I have been a Diana fan for almost 40 years, and I have never seen this. I did go to her house on Maple Drive when I was 16 years old. And I peeked through the fence to see her swimming pool and tennis court. I felt like Lucy Ricardo! Diana looks so pretty! I am, and always will be a Diana fan. I loved Diana's career and work from the 70s. She will always remain Supreme to me!
The most beautiful things about this interview is how true it turned out to be in terms of the importance of her children in her life. One of her children (Tracie) said that her mother "raised (them)" She was there for dinner and knew who their friends were. I think this interview is much more honest than many haters of Diana (boy! Was she ever beautiful here!) would like to admit.
Diana Ross is a very interesting, historical figure. If you know the story and understand the times and what was going on in this nation during her ascension into American consciousness, you have to give her props. Very interesting, indeed.
You gotta love Ross. She set the stage and laid the path for the divas of today. Truth be told, no performer on the scene today can even begin to touch her regarding glamour.
@GospelAccording2ME, yes it is strange how no one to date, with the exception of Lady Gaga perhaps seems to incorporate high fashion so well into their stage act or persona.
Diana did this very well, and with the utmost of taste, grace and style. She seemed to realize the importance of it. Jean Terrell once said," The glittery, fashionable gowns of The Supremes were due to Diana Ross' influence."
Man she is beautiful! Simply beautiful. Hair pulled back. Beautiful teeth. Clear skin. That face! She is the standard by which all these other girls are judged.
how can mary be sore about about what happened with flo when she was in on the whole thing. what a hypocrite. ross is and was a consummate professional. this is a great interview. great artist. great woman.
soragirl6 you are SO right, i mean I'm a florence fan but i do still think that even though Flo and diana might not have seen eye to eye all the time Flo never hated diana, disliked sure but never hate, Mary is different she is sore about the way things were handled with Flo and her self, and trent8002003 diana TRYED to give Flo money but she never got it as it was intercepted by someone (BERRY/TOMMEY?) Mary i don't know she lovely but can have she off moments, the same as diana.
I have to believe there's another side to Diana Ross' famed bitchiness. There are facts to back it up. She was the one who took financial care of both Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard.
This is a great interview. She's radiant but also she's just so honest. She admits to flaws and explains herself candidly and openly. You know she's not holding back. I have always been a fan, and I will continue to be. Beautiful spirit. You could feel that. And what's so great is we know she did find love again, and two more beautiful children came from that.
I am a true skeptic and hope that all of the horrible things that I heard about Ms Ross are lies.....how is it that so many people tell the same "lies?"
If they are true, especially in regards to Florence then her soul is as black as Dorian Grey's.
People do change though, but we are all getting older and she should know what to say after being interviewed so many times over the years. She sounds sweet though.
I t was never really Diana who held Florence ballard back..Mary Wilson said it was a really Berry Gordy, even Florence has said her issues were with Berry
Don't worry about it. Mary paid her back in spades for the past 25 years; backstabbing, revealing secrets, lying, and creating public havoc over and over again. People give Ross grief for the RTL tour but I give cred to DR for even wanting share a room with Mary let alone a professional stage. I felt like Mary should have been included along with Cindy but Ross has been "paid back" in spades if you ask me.
Yeah, it was really "awful" of her to loan money to Mary twice to buy homes, and give to Flo's children's trust fund. Really "awful" of Diana, you dumb ass
@BlogShag - Thank you. It was a simple case of bitterness & jealousy on the part of the other girls who never reached the heights Diana Ross did. Ross was smarter, more talented, move versatile and worked harder. Period.
@BlogShag They weren't as talented as Ross, but had a hard time admitting that. But it goes beyond that, Their voices weren't as easy to market to the masses. Diana had a universal sound to her voice that the other two just didn't have. Now it's true that perhaps her voice shouldn't have been singled out so much on the later DraTS recorings, but that was mostly Berry's plan.
She's nervous as hell, though! I just read about this interview! LOL! She was very intimidated by Miss Walters! LOL! But she handled herself well! She stumbled alot but handled herself ok.
LOL. You're right. But Barbara was known for being....you know...a BITCH. Diana was so eager to impress her that she had the room completely refurnished and repainted!!
@stawberry19919 that's funny that she would be intimidated by Walters, cause it's well known that Barbara Walters has always been jealous of her. And who wouldn't be jealous of Diana Ross?
WOW you get so much insight on her personality...You see what drove her to the hights of her stardom..Her inscurity and desire to be liked by the world...WOW!!!!
the way she talks and the words she ses is exactly like michael jackson.......i know that they were living together when michael was young and michael always admired her and tried to do everything as she did:)
i know one thing.... say what u will about miss ross... but she raised the hell outta those kids.. they are ALL successful, and u can tell when barbara asked her about her kids, she got stern and she meant business......... she LOVES her kids. u cant take that from her.......
Ms. Ross is just one of a kind. Very unique, a lot of class!!! I Love you Diana Ross!!!

I t was never really Diana who held Florence ballard back..Mary Wilson said it was a really Berry Gordy, even Florence has said her issues were with Berry

Flo told Tony Turner that Diana told Florence..."He's My Man Now!" LOL! What a bitch move!! I love them all!!

It is hard to imagine that someone who sings year in and year out being afraid of Babba Wabba. lol
I hear that performers often get nervous onstage, but....well who can tell, huh?

LOL. You're right. But Barbara was known for being....you know...a BITCH. Diana was so eager to impress her that she had the room completely refurnished and repainted!!

Damn...Babba Wabba seemed a little whipped when she and Rosie O' Mouth were on the View though.

@stawberry19919 that's funny that she would be intimidated by Walters, cause it's well known that Barbara Walters has always been jealous of her. And who wouldn't be jealous of Diana Ross?
BlogShag 1 year ago
@BlogShag Well...I'm most certainly not jealous of Miss Ross! =D
