I own a 1996 Passat TDI with 189,000 miles. As far as I know I've never had a problem with any diesel fuel over the years. I've had very few problems engine wise just mainly cosmetic.
@PiotrekN86 they only been around since the 1970's.izuzu,VW, toyota mercadies and mazda are the first ones to make small cars diesel here,GM was the first to make pick up trucks diesel followed by ford then dodge.olds mobile was the first to make full and mid size cars to make diesel.but dodge and ford never followed oldsmobile.and all of this happened in the 1970's and 80's
Great vid. If you go to Wal Mart you can buy the diesel additives that boost your cetane rating a few points, they have additives in them and some anti-gel too. I use them in my bus, I can hold 169 gallons of diesel, last year I topped the tank and put in 65 gallons, this year I didn't add any. Anyways, I had a hard time starting in 40 degree weather. Check out my vid or channel /watch?v=tMkkU3zKyuI
i never used additives because vw recommends not to. there are probably a few high quality ones but I'm kind of afraid to use them because of some of the horror stories i've heard. the glow plugs were swapped out as part of a recall for the car. after it was done, the car is harder to start when it's cold now.
a few people on tdiclub and other sources said that some of the less reputable additives are nothing but dyed mineral oil which will cause increased bearing corrosion and shorten the life of your motor. but on the other hand, there are some guy's who swear by the stuff. do you notice a significant difference when using them in your diesels as far as starting in the cold?
I believe its Powerclean or Diesel 911 i use, just get it at Wal-mart. Truck stops sell it too. Primarily its for the injectors. I have an older diesel in a bus its all mechanical, I've even put tranny fluid in the diesel. There is less black smoke at take off and a small increase in power. If you see my vids, you can see how it starts. In the 2nd vid I have my batterys are weak and I lost a little prime. But normally when its that cold it fires up the first time I just hold the throttle.
Transmission fluid from what I've been told by many mechanics its good for cleaning injectors, it disburses moisture in the fuel tank too. With newer stuff I can't really say if it would bother it. Injectors aren't cheap. I just throw this stuff in once a year or when I fill up. I've had the bus almost 3 years now. I probably put 300 miles if I was lucky on it for 2009. The lower sulfer of the new diesel has low lubricity, the older diesel was better, new diesel more likely to get moisture too.
wow, i never heard of using transmission fluid. i would be leery of using it in a new model diesel car though. hopefully the low sulfer diesel doesn't yield any drawbacks during the lifetime of new diesel vehicles in terms of reliability.
This problem is very simple to diagnose but not to fix. American Diesel fuel is VERY poor quality and has a low cetain content. This engine is designed to run on European quality fuel which has a much lower sulfur content. Engine is suffering from clogged injectors and intakes. Buy some Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst, follow instruction on the bottle and there will be some improvement. But the engine should really be taken apart and cleaned up.
actually the dealer screwed it up, they messed something up with the ecu when they re flashed it after the recall. it starts so badly in the cold, i had to install a frostheater for easier starts. i'm not sure if i should use the additive or not, VW advises not to use any additives.
@Landini100 I was told this exact thing by someone at my local VW dealership. I bought a diesel additive called Powerstroke right after I got my timing belt changed and have used it ever since. I haven't seen much of a difference but I'm hoping it'll be good for my engine down the road. (I'm at about 103,000 miles now.) Wal-Mart uses Powerstroke in all of their 18 wheelers.
jetta diesels are the bomb but i never had this problem with myn i got a 2006 jetta tdi and that thing is amazing its got power and accelaration and it dont smoke unless i want it too (just to piss the person off behind me ) plus im getting like 55 miles to the gallon mostly
Im sorry, Desmodronic916 but, that comment is ignorant... Diesel automobiles are extremely efficient and most of Europe has been using diesel technology for years. By cfar, they are more efficient and easier to maintain than those "jokes" called hybrids" Maybe look into diesels before you start punning them cause obviously, you have no clue what you are talking about
What about it??...Diesels seldom 'smoke' when its cold out.. unlike gassers you can see a trail... if your talking about black smoke it's due to some idiot having thier turbo boost turned up way to high causing unburnt fuel to escape threw the exhaust.. I.E.. Black smoke..
Arguing? Who's doing that? simply stating facts.. some people just can't deal with/ understand ;)
Golf 1.6Mk2, 1.6TurboD, Mk4 1,9 SDI, 1,9 TDIs, Cople of audis B5, 1,9 TDI 110Hp & 130hp, E46 320D 100Kw & 110kw, A6 3.0 TDI C6, Bmw 730d E38 and 740d E65, and all these cars (were 100%stock) had a white-gray smoke when step on throttle pedal even an Audi C6, onle last beemer I mentioned was smoke free! :)
Dealers are very ignorant. Least that's how my 08' Lancer was...before I totaled it ;). I had a similar problem with mine, though it was a gasser. It hated to start in the cold and often would crank for long periods. It gets really tiring taking it to the dealer and, if I had to do it again. I would just leave the problem there. They see 38742987 cars a day so chances are, it takes a couple times for them to finally notice that urs has an issue.
i think vw dealers are one of the biggest ripoffs in the automotive service department category. they make nice cars, especially diesels. but after you buy the car, they don't really give a shit what happens to it. it's pretty bad when you take a car to get a recall service done, instead of making it better, they make it worse.

diesel fuel gels up in temps below 32deg. try plugging in a block heater to keep fluid warm

I love the sound of the TDI in gear "neutral"

This should get the following;
injector purge(not injector cleaner in tank) with lubri-molly
intake manifold cleaning
EGR block off plate(to prevent future intake clogging)
Also try any fuel additive that contains hexacedane. It raises the cetane value of poor quality fuel, lowers the clouding point and chases water.

What kind of horror stories? I've never heard any myself. There are horror stories not using additives, injectors failing, that sorta thing.

@Landini100
The actual problem is that VW mesed up the programming in the glow plug recall and causes extremely hard/smokey starts.
Getting the latest T9 28F6 Emission Recall will fix it.
It had nothing to due with the injectors.

lol too much boost, sure, try too much fuel and not enough boost.

You need only one faulty glow plug to make engine start like this or not start at all. Diesel engines are for heavy machinery, not for automobiles.

thats why over 60% of volkswagens are diesel

No something is not working. Possibly a glow plug relay thats burnt out? It SHOULD NOT be that hard to start or, have that much smoke.

yeah, i know. the dealer did the glow plug recall and re flashed the ecu. it starts worse now than it did before.
