Ivan Coyote is a queer hero and icon, and one of my favorite artists. Ivan has that rare and sublime artistic ability, like Charlie Chaplin, to make us laugh and cry at the same moment.
When I met Ivan some years ago I noticed some people referred to Ivan in the feminine pronoun and some in the masculine. When I asked Ivan for his/her personal preference Ivan replied, "Whatever you are comfortable with."
kairaXD, your so funny, you did a workshop with HER and you call her, HIM! It is an opinion, one from personal experience having grown up in whitehorse, which is where she is from. And from knowing her in the queer community in Vancouver, so it is as I have said "she is who you want her to be" it just who she is.
I was one of the lucky few who got to do a 2 day workshop with him last spring, it was amazing. He came back to the Yukon for the young Writers Festival and it was honestly the best one I've ever been a part off.
i don't guess there's ever a bad time to address racism so I appreciate your mentioning it here. Unfortunately you don't have to scratch very hard at the surface of any white family in Canada--my own included--to uncover racism.
Mine too. You can tell from the stories Ivan's family is far from perfect (and racism is obviously far, far from it). But I'd hesitate to condemn Ivan because of it - in some ways we are our families, but not in every way.
@johnnydtractive or in the US. my mom is less racist than my grandmother, and i like to think i'm less racist than either of them, but it's hardly a non-issue.
I would like to watch the entire talk. It is very interesting and educational for me.

I just came back from a week of writing at a youth book camp; and she was our group mentor. She was so amazing, supportive and inspirational!

Hate to blow your bubble folks, but Ivan e. coyote comes from a in your face racist family. Personally, she is what you want her to be...

But laid bare for everyone to see, the purpsose might be to show the pain and the humor in the quandry of human diachotomy.
