  • The link is that the album this is from (The Black Halo) and the album that Epica is named for (Epica) are both telling a love story between a man named Arial, and a woman, Helena. It's like a continuous poem. If you buy the albums, you'll notice that there are several interludes telling the in-between stuff of the story. I'm not sure on the details, myself, but that's the general gist.

  • The story is an interpretation of Goethe's Faust. The full story is too long to really go into here, but here's the general plot:

When God tells all His angels to kneel to humanity, Mephisto, the angel who loves God the most, refuses, stating that God is the only being worthy of his servitude. God casts him out of heaven for his defiance, but makes a deal: if Mephisto can make Ariel, God favorite human, willingly give him his soul, God will allow Mephisto back into heaven.

  • Ariel agrees to let have Mephisto have his soul, but makes a deal: Mephisto will serve Ariel, fulfulling all of his desires, but if Ariel once experiences a moment in which he is so content that he wishes to linger there forever, Mephisto will have his soul upon his death. Soon after this, Ariel comes across his lover Helena, who had been searching him ever since he had left his home years before to find the answers to his questions about the meaning of life.

  • The two spend the night together, and conceive a child, unbeknownst to either of them. Ariel, however, in order to protect Helena from Mephisto's manipulations, leaves her once again. Helena, once her true love leaves her once again, drowns herself and her unborn child in a nearby river. Ariel, horrified when he learns ofher death, decides he must continue his quest, or else her death was for nothing. Mephisto, however, wants Ariel to get over his grief and be happy, so he can gain entrance...

  • back into heaven. He finds a girl, Marguerite, who looks and sounds just like Helena, and arranges for the two of them to be together, in order make Ariel happy. After Ariel realizes what he has done, he tries to explain himself to Marguerite (Simone Simmons) in this song. Ariel leaves her and journeys on for years more until coming to a realization: he has forsaken the two women who loved him.

  • He realizes that he is the cause of this sorrow and pain, and that he will never be free from the consequences of his actions. In a moment of clarity, Ariel realizes that the oly universal truth is love. This realization, the answer to the questions that had plagued him all his life, causes Ariel to enter the moment of perfect contentment that allowed Mephisto to take his soul. However, as Ariel's soul leaves his body, he is redeemed by his final rejection of evil, and is admitted to heaven...

  • while Mephisto, who lost his bet, is cast into Hell.

Yup, short version. Only like 3000 characters. I was bored anyway. Sorry about it being backwards, didn't think far enough ahead to write it all out first and copy and paste it in last to first.

  • wouaouh thank you for this explanation! I have to read Faust!

  • I don't really care for Kamelot's stuff, but this is pretty cool.

    Simone carries, basically.

  • Very nice video. I like the spirit of the song.

  • Helena killed herself in Epica. Thsi si Ariel and Marguerite. I was so confused cause I had no idea what these songs were about when I first got the albums. lol But you kinda catch the story. plus wikipedia has all the info about the characters and the whole story line.

  • Actually, Helena is a reference to Goethe's Faust. And part of the story portrayed through the albums "Epica" and "The Black Halo" (This song, The Haunting (Also called Somwhere in Time)is from The Black Halo). The story follows Ariel, on his quest to find meaning, and his Helena, who is his love. And Mephisto, the Archangel who has made a bet with God, that he could aquire Ariels soul for him. ((I hate to commercialize, but I've made a few videos about this.)) =)

  • Wow! Thanks a lot for the infos! I'm proud to be named Helena! =)

  • No problem :P It's all on wikipedia. So I won't claim credit for the information
