The cere, which is the part that the nostril things are in, will be blue if male and for female, it will be a pinkish brownish color. Sometimes the females will be a bit wrinkly. But when it is young, you can't really tell so well.
Well, if you don't have trouble with "witchcraft" and are so talented.. My mom was always able to do it by hanging a needle like a pendulum from an 18 inch thread (not tied, just looped back to the hand). You dangle it over the animal or person and if it's a boy, it moves straight back and forth. If it's a girl, the needle moves in a circle. She sexed hundreds of birds this way and was never wrong when compared with veterinary surgical-sexing results.
A bird vet can charge over $50 and it's too dangerous for a parakeet (anesthetic used to put bird down for proceedure). Bowiechick rightly described the coloration thing for telling when they're mature.

i had a bird once that looked JUST like ziggy. :) i think it was a BIT darker/brighter in color but i had him for YEARS and one day we noticed he had a big spot under his feathers on his belly. he had developed some type of cancer and ended up passing away from it but he was a GREAT birdy to us and we had much fun with him! :D i also had a cockatiel once and she was even better. <3 so sweet.
Ziggy is a bit brighter than he appears in this video, not the best lighting. Sorry about your bird, it's sad when pets have to go through something like that because you would think they feel more helpless than a human might.
Actually, that doesn't hold true with Parrots. Parrots & parakeets of either gender are identical in color, with a few exceptions. With parakeets, the only to tell is cere color, as Melody mentioned. Look it up!
I'm really against keeping birds as pets. I just feel so sorry for them because they can't fly freely. They're born to fly. Fly anywhere they want.... but us humans decide to stick them in a cage and say 'you can fly for that perch to that perch... oh and back again'

actually, if you've ever "owned" a pet bird and spent some time around them as pets you would come to realize they are very happy lil birdies and love being around humans. you don't HAVE to keep them locked away. they can come out and play with you and sit on your shoulder and they get treats and love.
yeah. :) does he have his wings clipped or is he au naturale? lol. my cockatiel didn't have hers clipped and she could fly like CRAZY but they actually clip their wings for their own safety so i tried to not let her crash into stuff. she got better after a while. :)
Actually i did 'own' 2 birds (canaries). Lovely little things but it was them that made me feel really bad about the whole 'caged bird' issue. I'm not trying to start a debate about it but surely you can see that a bird would rather be flying freely (outside) than fly around your room. And the reason they seem 'very happy' is simply because they don't know it could be better.
It seems to be pretty friendly, though I just got it and it is a little scared right now. It only bit me really hard once, when I was transfering it from the box to the cage. But if I put my hand in there too quickly, it my lightly nibble, but I can't feel it much.

If it is brighter in color it is a male if it dull colored then it's a female look it up! I have 6 birds, I raise them...

No, they aren't clipped. I know they say to just for their safety, but I would feel bad if my little Ziggy didn't get to fly. Birds just fly.
