Ohh you can find them in the chinese grocery store also. My grandma makes them using leaves also because banana leaves are hard to come across in our area. :D You can try that subsitiutation if you can't come across banana leaves.

Xtish, I think its just a matter of experience. My dad has made this traditional cake every single Chinese New Year for about 22 years. My parents started making since I was born.
