Mom and dad used to take us to an Italian restaurant a couple of towns over. We used to love the place. Spaghetti, meatballs and lots of cheese. After dinner, while they would take their coffee, pop would give us a couple of quarters and we kids would attack the jukebox in the front of the dining room. This was one of the songs my sister always picked. Such great times.
I finished high school in 1975....It does bring back memories ....God..What a better time than now ... What happened to music ????? Kinda cRAPPY now ..
@hotstuffandicecream Yeah, it was on WPRO AM in those days. A year later I believe, their FM station(WPRO that is) went from Classical to pop and rock. It got a lot of play, but I wonder what happend to them.
I remember back in the '70's flipping through the radio dial hoping to run into this song and what a treat it was when it came on, then trying to record it on a cassette tape. YouTube and iTunes have spoiled us.
@FuzzBug1 I remember doing the same thing...hahaha...too funny..back then people were so much more isolated and you would think you were the only doing things, huh??lol..Great! WICC-AM Bridgeport, CT
@unfluster lol..thats funny, I remember this song as a kid, I liked it because it was about Karen Harris so it always felt good, still does. But how misleading for an 11 yr old!?!
@unfluster I used to think he said "Your gonna feed me a Milky Way"....lol..hahaha... Honestly I did until you said the above...Man that blows it for me now :(
A real Detroit classic from Jim Gold and Gallery? Jim Gold was welder for the Ford Motor Company when he and several Studio Musician friends formed Gallery! The real sound of Motown and Detroit at It's best!!
Here's another song I loved so much from my childhood! I'd hear it on my mom's 8-track tape, monster hits, or the radio, as we traveled along in her car to you knew where! Peace and Love to All, BobbyK
Great comments all! I remember this song from an old Ktel album I had (and still have somewhere!) Remember those? 22 songs on one record and the damn things would skip if you breathed in their direction! Great memories! Thanks
I am in a time machine, grade seven, Miss Murchies' class, Canada just won the cup (hockey) and we were spinning 45's on the schools Bell and Howell Record Player. I want to stay here!
@TheMightyHope Hey, I just bought a "Bell & Howell" Fish-Eye lens for my new Nikon D5100. Bell & Howell went out of business years ago to my knowlede, but they slap the trade name on a lot of things today. B & H was once a large company. I got my lens from NYC and it works great! Regards to Miss Murchy! A retired Catholic priest in Ontario. P.S. I hope Sidney Crosby stays well. It was a great goal to win the Olympic Gold. Good luck.
Whenever I hear the opening strains of this song, I am instantly taken back to that summer scene of the six of us; 'The Usual Suspects', all 7th graders; Tom, Liz, Kim, James, Tony and I hanging out in our backyard pool as this song played on our house sterio system. We were just summer chillin that July 1973, dunking the girl's heads under, trying to sneek a quick kiss while my Mother wasn't 'chaperoning'. It was nice when Mom brought out her Chocolate Chip cookies and Lemonade though.
I want to know if all of you who grew up as teens and preteens in the late 60's and early 70's feel like I do; that we have entered a surreal, twilight zone in this 21st century? To some extent it can be blamed on the 'growin old phenoma' of every generation. But why do I feel so out of place as events political and social seem to swirl out of control unlike that which my parents and grandparents experienced?
@jeff62rey You're not alone. I'm right there with you buddy. There really is such thing as a time machine and we are traveling in it right now. I just wish we had You Tube back in those days...Well, maybe not. It would have spoiled us.
@Raman711 Sure would have spoiled us ... half of the joy of hearing your favorite song was listening to the radio, waiting two hours to finally catch it!
@STEPcoach Your not kidding..but you had to shift through one's you didn't like which made it suck sometimes..And I would wander.."how did that get on the radio".....
I heard this song on the radio today (hadn't heard it forever) and couldn't remember who did it. Thanks YouTube for making this inquiry so easy...hahahaha
You ain't lived if you hadn't heard top 40 music blasting out of an A.M. Radio!!!!
(Sigh) A sign of old age I guess.....I'm just an old guy traveling down the Interstate of life in the left lane, doing forty, with the left blinker on....(Dee Donk.....Dee Donk.....Dee Donk......) (That's the sound of the blinker(s).....)...LOL
@hotstuffandicecream Well, Yeah! That was "how we rolled" back in the day! (note the quotes ... clear indicator of being old! HA!) Super stuff from the best years to grow up in.
I used to have a 33 rpm album from K-Tel records, a compilation of different artists, and this song was on it. I may even still have it. I have to check. Anyway, great song. Interesting use of the steel guitar.
Oh to be back for just one day in the summer of '72. Mike, Pauley, Kim, Elizabeth and I would ride our bikes down to the Auglaize River every morning that summer that it didn't rain. 12 years old and feeling this bond between us all that wouldn't be broken until after High School. "When I'm feeling down, you're there to pick me up." That's how our gang hung that year! Then I remember turning 13 and suddenly Kim started to look different. One day we locked fingers and the thrill exploded.
Oh it's so nice to hear this song, it''s been oh so way too long! Gallery however was not a one-hit wonder, but a three-hit wonder. Their other hits were "I Believe In Music" and "Big City Miss Ruth Ann".
Back in those early 70's we would ride our junior high school bus and we were lucky enough to have a radio. It was one fall afternoon '72 and I was 8th grade, trying to get up the nerve to ask this cute, red head named Monica to the dance. The bus was really crowded that day and there was one seat left when Monica got on. She sat down and my heart pounded, but something about this song calmed my nerves. We talked. Walked home from the bus stop and it turned out to be a great Fall dance.
I was 6 when this song was popular.. I lived in Albuquerque New Mexico at the time.. I love all the music from the 70's, brings back a lot of memories.
I didn't pay attention to this song, having a country sound that I avoided but in looking back and listening, I now appreciate it. I give this song "100" for the "acting out" ability!!! and it is so nice to be with you....
I was a little kid when this song was on the radio and I thought he used to sing, "oh it's so nice to be with you ...and it's so nice to hear you say, you're gonna *beat* me in every way"....
LOL, it certainly put a different twist on the meaning there !
Funny, I thought that music was good back then, and assumed it would get even better. Tunes were memorable, and stuck in your head, so much so that you found yourself whistling 'em. Try to whistle yer average rap tune.
Love the 70's music. Lucky enough to grow up listening to these tunes when they first came out. Fun, carefree, happy tunes, made you feel good just to be alive!
@akretowicz I was 10 that year. I remember riding around on my lime green sting ray bicycle and listening to this song on my AM transistor radio that rode in the basket that was strapped to the handle bars of the bicyle...dude, I was so CINDY BRADY! lol
We all talk about music trends and why now isn't then. Something nobody mentions is that back then they didn't have that music so they had to make it. Now days we have that music because THEY made it. So, what bugs me is that in 39 years we'll still have what they made in 72', but what did 2011 have to offer? 2011 TOP 40 SUCKS!!!!!
I remember one junior high school dance when I first got to dance with Elizabeth Duquette and I was so nervous. I was so self conscious until Elizabeth said, "sure, I'd love to dance with you." Not only did we dance that night, but I found out that her family was moving to my neighborhood that May of 1972 and we spent the whole summer riding bikes, splashing our feet in the river, sitting on the couch and co-babysitting our younger siblings when the parents went out for the evening.
One of my favorites in the late Spring 1972. Oh, the memories of peace sign rings, smiley faces, my Schwinn Stingray bike with banana seat, my red & white Radio Shack record player and my 45s, my Radio Shack cassette player, AM radio, and al the other good stuff.
Did anyone else out there own the K-TEL album BELIEVE IN MUSIC (1972) ?
It had 22 great hits from the day. I found the CD a few years back, but it had been cut down to 10 songs and the tracks were different. Wish I could have it just like it was back then on CD!
@windsong1a If this is the album you are talking about, I have it. It has 22 hits but the one I have isn't called BELIEVE IN MUSIC. It had songs from Gallery, April Wine, Lobo, Hamilton Joe Frank And Reynolds and more. You tube has this video of the original commercial for the album. Just search
K-tel Records "22 Explosive Hits" commercial - 1972 .
The Seventies, (especially the early 70s) was so rich in good music it was like having multiple orgasms inside your ears and brain!! And it STILL gives me that same feeling (even more so) because today's music has turned to CRAP!
On an American Bandstand show in '72, this was the second lowest rated record on the show ever! Song was released anyway, and charted 2/26/72, spent 22 weeks charted and peaked at #4 Guess teenagers don't always know music!
Thanks momsher1 for reminding it was 1972. I could not remember but for some reason this brings back memory of a good time in my life. It probably related to starting high school.
Heard this on the radio the other day, remember it from the 70's (am an African American female). Made me smile, always turn it up in the car and @ home...Used to listen to it on WABC w/Cousin Brucie and other DJs growin up in Harlem, NYC ! The lead singer has the most great male singing voice and the backups w/him delightful, the music also gives a "good" feeling. Hope one day a guy feels this way about me, for real...
This brings back memories of seeing kids on swingsets in the park and hearing them singing this song aloud or the other ultra-sweet hit "Playground in my mind" from the early 1970s.
OMG, I so remember singing this song with my cousin Judy. We thought it was David Cassidy at first....then found out it was one hit wonder Gallery (I guess they are a one hit wonder? Not sure.) Judy loved this song SOOOOO much. LOL. And she was older! TOO FUNNY.
What a Crafty Cut!!! hey don't 4get on this album they cut Neil Diamonds "Sunday & Me" and did a helllllllluva job I might add. These guys rock 2 kewll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Folks.... it's so nice to be with you, I love all the things you say on youtube.

Love the 70's music. Lucky enough to grow up listening to these tunes when they first came out. Fun, carefree, happy tunes, made you feel good just to be alive!

Music then was carefree. Music today is careless. I was only 12 when this came out, but still remember it like it was yesterday. Thanks for posting!

@akretowicz I was 10 that year. I remember riding around on my lime green sting ray bicycle and listening to this song on my AM transistor radio that rode in the basket that was strapped to the handle bars of the bicyle...dude, I was so CINDY BRADY! lol

I've heard music critics say, and I totally agree, that the 70's were the best decade for music. I used to love this song! Thanks for posting!
garymuzik 4 months ago 4

Wish I could have it just like it was back then on CD!
windsong1a 5 months ago
@windsong1a I have that album and many more.

@windsong1a Yep, I still have it too, along with a bunch of other K-TEL albums.

In the '50's, audiences wanted to be entertained by the DJ's and the music.
In the '60's, audiences wanted to be entertained by the DJ's talking about the music & the music.
In the '70's, audiences wanted the DJ's to shut-up because the music was more entertaining.
In the '80's, music was different, but still appealed to audiences.Groups faded to individuals.
In the '90's, music became a meaningless connection w/the audience.
...and it has since then (with very rare exceptions)

On an American Bandstand show in '72, this was the second lowest rated record on the show ever! Song was released anyway, and charted 2/26/72, spent 22 weeks charted and peaked at #4 Guess teenagers don't always know music!
By the way it sold a million copies.
