@Kyllo11 3-way bulbs are one of the several exceptions of the bulb ban. So they will still be available. Other bulbs that won't banned are appliance bulbs, rough service lights, flood light versions, decorative bulbs (such as canldelabra) anything under 40 watts and as I mentioned, 3-way bulbs will not be banned.

I'm not so sure about those numbers on the cost per year. If I remember correctly, one CFL that we have uses ~15W which is 0.015kWh.

0.015 * 24hrs/day * 365 days/year * ($ per kWh which I'll use $0.07 for this example) = $9.20/year assuming it's on 24/hrs a day all year.

What am I missing?

The other problem that i have with cfls is the light quality. Their light quality is absolutely horrible. We use the "COOL" or blue tinted ones in the kitchen & outside.

Yeah, right, I bought 3 of the more "efficient" halogen inserted bulbs and they all burned out faster than any bulb I have ever had and I'm still using some incandescent that I can't even remember when I bought, so they may be more energy efficient, but they are definitely not more cost effective and, I would add, will cost far more in the long run and, if not recycled, be added burden to our growing refuse problem.

evn if you DONT recycle the fluorescents that contain mercury after use, there will still be less mercury getting into nature. Much electricity comes from coal, and burning coal releases mercury into the atmosphere. You can calculate how much mercury is released for the energy you use, and compare that to the amount of energy CFLs save. The result is that over the lifetime of a CFL you kept significantly more mercury from getting into nature than the CFL contains.

I heard this reported on Fox once and never heard a word about it on any other news outlet. There didn't seem to be any outrageous clams being made, it seems to be a report similar to how one would report that an eclipse was about to take place... none of the usual BS alarms went off.

It was just funny to me to find that the one time I trusted something Fox reported turned out to be misinformation.

I think the reason why Fox might have been the only outlet to "report" on this is becuz it's under the Obama administration, puts in place a new type of regulation and anything that's remotely "green" will set off major craziness by Fox. Solyndra was just one of the many loans that Obama made to green energy companies. The only reason it got more press is becuz he publicized Solyndra. Fox has a reputation for lying more than others.
