JC.. he ABSOLUTELY used a tuned down 4 string. Think about it.. this was recorded in early-mid 1979. Nobody was using 5's yet. Plus.. he stated in Bass Player that he tuned down.. there's a complete transcription of this line in that issue.
Your absolutely right - I never took into consideration the time period as well. I transcribed this line myself but I never knew an issue of Bass Player had it! Wow! Do you know which issue that was in? I'd love to check it out.
That finally explains why I've never been able to play the bassline on this song. I thought a number of notes in the line go below E but wasn't absolutely sure. Never knew that Bobby Watson of Rufus(who played it on the record) was using a 5-string bass. Thanks for posting this clip. Your performance on this is flawless!! :)
To blackwaxjh - howdy! I'm pretty sure that Watson tuned a four string bass down a half step to record this line. I've transcribed and analyzed the bass part for this tune, and the way some of his patterns lay (fingering wise) and sound (open string, as opposed to close string) indicate that he just tuned down a half step - namely the C section where he plays an open E while hitting the double stop over E7. Although I can't be absolutely sure of this, all evidence points in this direction.
check out the way he bounces his head.. I always say the best bass players NEVER look like hollywood stars...yo- you're good man..Is the a music man bass?
I love your playing bro keep it going....
