loose formation???? There is no "formation". The two aircraft have nothing to do with each other. And of course my favorite aviation song has a line about "wind BENEATH my wings"

I asked a 747 pilot on a transatlantic flight why we were following someone. He asked how I knew and I pointed out the parallel shadows thousands of feet below. He admitted that they often travel in loose formation, always observing the altitude and horizontal separation rules. That's what's going on here. That vapor trail is a couple of thousand feet above and the other aircraft is a couple of miles ahead. Unusual to see, but not unusual.
