If you read the book "Mop Men" by Alan Emmins, you understand more about Neal and realize that this guy actually has a good head on his shoulders. to most people, his attitude is appalling--how could someone be so detached? but it's necessary. if you become too attached to what you're doing, you end up "bringing work home". so in reality, Neal actually handles this all very well.

This is crazy, somebody got stabbed by a knife - we'll never know what that person must have felt like when it was happening to him/her.. yet stuff like this happens all the time. Being in the business myself, you have to learn to diassociate yourself from the event. What usually happens is it hits you a few days later, you wonder what the details were and that's as far as it goes, you can't get emotionally attached to any scene or else you will never be able to do this job. You don't have to be as cold hearted as Neil is but at the same time you do have to look at it as a business and you can't imagine the earning potential
I took my classroom training online and my field training is done hands on when you go to actual scenes. No there is no college degree needed but you have to get state certifications, but the tests are not that difficult. You have to look around for good rates to take some tests, some schools charge a lot for training-keep in touch
I find it incredible that this company is so UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Doug is letting a "virgin" crime scene cleaner work without wearing his respirator. He isn't even wearing his. They could be infected by air-borne pathogens which could kill them. Plus, it is so cold to say that he doesn't care about who died, etc. I wouldn't want to hire his company.

It may be true that they have to 'disassociate' themselves from what they do, but, "No, I don't I'll give a fuck about this woman, this is nothing to me, nothing." That is a little too much. There's a line between decency and being a total asshole.
I see your point, but the reason he jokes about it and laughs is so that it doesn't mess him up. It's a natural defense mechanism and is completely healthy. It prevents mental damage even if it seems heartless.
By the way, not all crime scene cleaners are as cold-hearted as Neil Smithers. Of course these guys have to detach themselves (just like police, emt's, doctors, etc) or be utterly consumed by it. But if anything, the fact that he is so over-the-top and lacking in humanity indicates his profound weakness. I get the strong impression that if he allowed himself to actually FEEL something for those people, he'd crack up.
There's an excellent book out called "Mop Men" that gives an in-depth look at crime scene cleaners from an average reporter's perspective. What I found most difficult to take was the fact that gruesome hotel/motel scenes (like the one depicted here) are incredibly commonplace-- even in 5 star hotels! Manager's just want the rooms cleaned ASAP so they can rent it out again immediately. Fact is, if you travel often chances are you've probably stayed in a room where someone died a tragic death.
Someones gotta clean it up, and if you let it get you, the job can't be done the world has terrible things that go on in it and someones gotta clean it up. They aren't terrible people they just have accepted the reality of life and know its nothing more than a job, feeling sorry for someone does no good after the fact and most certainly if you didn't know that person at all

This is crazy, somebody got stabbed by a knife - we'll never know what that person must have felt like when it was happening to him/her.. yet stuff like this happens all the time. A messed up world we live in!!!! And the owner's attitude is way beyond acceptable. At least show some courtesy to the deceased especially when a cameraman is around, goddamn it!

Neil is an absolutely horrid excuse of a human being. I am completely and utterly appalled with his lack of empathy. Sure, it's something that takes place on a daily basis and someone has to clean it up. But you don't get on national TV and make such callous remarks. For someone who is trying to paint a picture of professionalism, his attitude is completely the opposite.

Being in the business myself, you have to learn to diassociate yourself from the event. What usually happens is it hits you a few days later, you wonder what the details were and that's as far as it goes, you can't get emotionally attached to any scene or else you will never be able to do this job. You don't have to be as cold hearted as Neil is but at the same time you do have to look at it as a business and you can't imagine the earning potential

I took my classroom training online and my field training is done hands on when you go to actual scenes. No there is no college degree needed but you have to get state certifications, but the tests are not that difficult. You have to look around for good rates to take some tests, some schools charge a lot for training-keep in touch

I find it incredible that this company is so UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Doug is letting a "virgin" crime scene cleaner work without wearing his respirator. He isn't even wearing his. They could be infected by air-borne pathogens which could kill them. Plus, it is so cold to say that he doesn't care about who died, etc. I wouldn't want to hire his company.

By the way, not all crime scene cleaners are as cold-hearted as Neil Smithers. Of course these guys have to detach themselves (just like police, emt's, doctors, etc) or be utterly consumed by it. But if anything, the fact that he is so over-the-top and lacking in humanity indicates his profound weakness. I get the strong impression that if he allowed himself to actually FEEL something for those people, he'd crack up.

There's an excellent book out called "Mop Men" that gives an in-depth look at crime scene cleaners from an average reporter's perspective. What I found most difficult to take was the fact that gruesome hotel/motel scenes (like the one depicted here) are incredibly commonplace-- even in 5 star hotels! Manager's just want the rooms cleaned ASAP so they can rent it out again immediately. Fact is, if you travel often chances are you've probably stayed in a room where someone died a tragic death.

He, Neal, is full of shit. You can't do a job that spends time on these type scenes without being affected, even slightly (cop, firefighter/paramedic, coroner). He is detached alright. It's one thing to talk like that with 'other scene personnel', but to be THAT insensitive ON CAMERA takes him STRAIGHT to Asshole Supreme status. People viewing this could be future business contacts. His business may be the largest of type (for now), but NOT THE ONLY. What an ass!!!
