  • True fact: ansyf125 is still transcribing this piece

  • @a803966 Same style and instrumentation.

  • I kind of agree in some aspects with CaroAOkay. I feel like this video isn't a good representation of him getting his ideas across. I mean, he's still a badass, but this isn't him at his best. But my opinion doesn't mean anything because I don't have the Marcus Miller gig and he does.

  • @musicmanson But you're right.

  • Yes or No by Wayne Shorter was in fact the song that inspired Yoko Kanno's Rush in the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. If you listen carefully to the beginning of "Yes or No" and the "Rush" you will hear the inspiration there.

  • 2:12

  • What model does he use? That is a sweet sounding alto!

  • @CoD5number1fan Yamaha Custom Z I think

  • props to the drummer. sheesh

  • Awesome!!!

  • why am i more amazed by the drummer...

  • Elmas Prilep Watch this 11 Yrs old Boy unbelievable finger trick (Elmas From Macedonien)

  • wats the name of this song?

  • @jcaz181 "Yes or No" by Wayne Shorter

  • @CaroAOkay naw the way the notes sound are just more modern jazz harmonies

  • Cowboy BeBop!

or a close a rendition of yoko kanno's piece

  • all you fools need to HUSH this dude is BEAST! Take it from me...I'm a sax player and listen to the greats....this guy will be one this generation's greats

  • @TenorSaxBreed His sound isn't really that unique (that's the problem with jazz), but he's a great player.

Please don't compare him to the giants of jazz. That's not the way the world works.

  • @busterbrownation Its not comparism. Not only is Alex Han proficient, he has great musical ideas, have you listened to his latest stuff with Marcus Miller? He is a prodigy and if he keeps it up he will be one of the greatest players of his time at the rate he's going. And how is uniqueness a problem in jazz..just touching on a few saxophonists, John Coltrane. Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Cannonball, Sonny Rollins, they all have unique sound you could pinpoint just by listening to their records

  • @TenorSaxBreed No, what I was saying about Han was that his playing style doesn't seem that unique compared to players from the past.

But, i see you weren't comparing; I too think he's an excellent player for this century

  • @CaroAOkay cool. or i would say agreed. it is no where near "cool" in this heat we are having. have a great day. keep playing and practicing!

  • @CaroaAOkay ah... i see what your'e saying. i am a sax player 2. sorry 4 my harshness. i agree, it's important to have a nice tone... ur words well taken. but in his behalf, it's difficult 4 me to judge his sound from a distance. his sound may sound excellent (if we were actually there). but many factors could have affected his sound 4 us to hear over the net. 4 ex. bad acoustics, bad recording, etc. difficult to know without being there how he "actually" sounded. my thoughts.

  • @CaroAOkay no he might not be the best but he sure can play. what do u mean the notes don't sound good? it's obvious you don't understand the language of jazz judging by the comments u are making. Hmmm. u need to stop talking and listen more clearly. who said he was playing bebop? hmmmm. ???

  • Nice

  • YES OR NO! If I didn't know any better I'd say Shorter himself is playing

  • @CaroAOkay then bebop is not for you

  • technically very good, i don't really enjoy listening to it though. That's my personal taste I guess

  • it's amazing, it's the god of jazz!! it's jazzman!! it's all

  • 1:25 he's trying to tickle the sax or trying to give a handjob like kim kardasian lol jk

    This is monster awesome!

  • He was only 18 when he played this. Holy crap.

  • @pebblefrog196 im almost posotive he is the alto sax professor at UNR (reno, Nevada.) sounds like him and looks like him.

  • Pencil and manuscript;

    time to transcribe this badboy.

  • Wow. Incredible performance, and super smooth through so many parts. If I could transcribe and learn to play this solo, I think I'd be like 100x better than I am today.

Just incredible solo!! Super compact sound. Just love it!

  • Jesus christ! Hero

  • who's the trumpeter?

  • He's a good a musician but he's got that "commercial jazz" sound : ( He's dynamic, but very hyper... not too original...at least yet....but a good young musician...

  • And they say white man can't funk it up... fuck whoever says that!

  • @Goldendroid That'd be hilarious if he wasn't white!

  • @wavelydavely

    um...he's not white.

  • Very nice Control, keep it up man..

  • THE MONSTER

  • i see him in Milan few days ago, i love this guy!

  • What song is this?

  • @shepgthollywood yes and no by wayne shorter

  • fcking hell!!!! i love this guy...

i watched his solo with marcus miller at rotterdam..

    he's legend!

  • somebodys been practising

  • :D. I'm a 8 th grader an have Ben playing for 5 years and I play alto sax. :D

    This guy is awsome. :D

  • Amazing!

  • Can some one tell me how to get that sound wat do u have to do

  • @nvgoodboby he is playing at like a altissimo level it can be very hard to get that sound out but now you can get saxophones where it is very easy to get that sound out but it takes skill what i do is add alittle of a growl and sometimes the altissimo comes out because your throat sometimes get high on the growl and you can use your voice to get certain sounds out just look up videos to help you but he is basically playing regular high notes and its just that some saxophones sound different

  • legal demais

  • Some left hand !

  • I love it!!!!!!

  • fantastic!

  • "Yes Or No" by Wayne Shorter

  • Dang! what song is this called?

  • I hate people who rag on musicians like people in this forum have. Hes got a lot of talent. I also love the video. Go Alex

  • great. really amazing!

  • BLACK SAXOPHONE!!! OMG.....this guy is a beast.......A BEAST!!!

  • is that a cannonball hes playing?

  • @BCshuffling no its a yamaha custom ex

  • not bad ,but he is not a genius,he is a professional.

  • He's going places!!!!!

  • nice sax! but damn, check out the drummer!

  • alex is the best.

    his tone, his skills.

    awesome!

  • NICE!

  • @ Walvrick how about you post a video of your playing and we'll see how it compares...alex is an amazing musician and has very good straight ahead chops (check out him playing giant steps) don't post idiot comments and lastly....fuck you.

  • is he bold?!

  • Very fine playing.

  • holy crap....watch his left hand at like 1:25

  • @mfkanger lool

  • @mfkanger i can do that to thats not that hard xith your left hand

  • @mfkanger yeah...it is called awful technique

  • @mfkanger

common bad habit of players who use front fork keys. can put a lot of strain on the wrist, i know from experience. doesn't seem to slow this kid down though

  • @mfkanger You can do like that, hahahaaha

  • @mfkanger he has to do that to use the palm keys

  • GENIA! GREAT PERFORMANCE

  • Alex, you shocked me with that awesome solo. I just finished listening to about ten trumpet and sax videos and yours knocked them all out. You have a great linear quality to your playing I dig very much. You seem young, that's good. Maybe will hear more from you.

  • good energy coming from his music however too much pop sound and licks for me..but it's only my opinion

  • okay people I could cannot blow my alto sax very well can someone tell me how make cool sounds like this video with it

  • Walvirck is right. Start with major or minor pentatonics around the cycle of fourths.

Make sure you know all your blues scales - so trite and basic, but essential.

But, listen a lot to others - you don't want to become your own influence, as they say.

  • @Walvirck

Such passionate nostalgia will only hold you back. There's nothing wrong with embracing a more modern side of jazz. And I understand that this is something you must care for deeply, but also keep these things in mind: It's just your opinion. You may hate this style of jazz, and I hate most smooth jazz, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's worse. It's just my opinion. Also, Alex is I think 18 in this. If you find another 18 year old who plays like this then PLEASE show him/her to me!

  • great!

  • GREAT GREAT !!!! BRAVO !

  • Alex Han is fantastic, I saw him play live with Marcus Miller at the Barbican. Unbelievable playing.

  • It's "Yes or No" by Wayne Shorter! Great interpretation, but lacks the sophisticated phrasing of Wayne.

  • @aiwendilciunio Wayne has been around for a fair few years more... This guy is kicking ass, I

'm the age he is in this video, I only dream of nailing the changes as well as this!

  • Incredible!!

  • Great solo, excellent phrasing in my opinion, but the tone on the higher notes seemed a bit shrill. Still I couldn't begin to do that on alto sax, which I have played for a few years.

  • This youngman is incredable!!!!! i can tell he has a passion for Jazz & Bebop. I would love to hear him play music of his time to influence a younger people.

  • I think it's a good solo in general. Like all young soloists, it has strengths and weaknesses. Here's my opinion on some of those:

Str = Mature Tone, technique, time, rhythm, creativity

Weak = (some say too many notes is immature...not always true, but here is something that tends to go hand in hand with that concept) Too many different ideas instead of development

    (Continued on next post...)

  • He has some "smooth" style to his playing, that doesn't mean it's bad. we change styles of songs all the time. problem is that the others are still playing "straight ahead", so there should be an agreement.

Many musicians his age don't develop solos well and still suck at the other stuff too. he's a large step ahead of many saxophonists and it sounds to me like he works very hard. Good job!

  • The only reason this video doesn't have 5 stars is because people that are jealous of Han rate this as a 1/5... Ha

  • wow i am alto sax but this is awesome! way to go :D

  • un energia pazzesca. e che controllo. bravo!!!!!

  • I Think Alto Sax best sounding one

  • simply amazing he can blow, the posters who are saying he has a long way to go really are just jealous... If HE has a long way to go, then where are the rest of us??Most of us would kill to rip like him

  • i agree altonativesax very true.

  • Bull

  • you've played 3 years which is just about the point where you think you're just as good as every other player because you don't understand how many facets there are to playing well.

  • @HolyNinja1228 you hit it on the head

  • NO YOU CAN'T. don't get cocky.

  • Pack.

  • Sauced.

  • what song is this...anyone know?

  • wayne shorter owns yes and no is an awesome song

  • Foda!!

  • I meant, I'll tell you what, let's..............

  • I'll you what, post your video and less see if you can stand up to some feedback. It's not technique though he is gifted, it's the fire that you feel when you listen. That comment about less is more...... Give me break sometimes more is more... Music is supposed elicit emotion otherwise why freakin play. Ease up. This guy can blow...

  • the audio levels are unbalanced

  • simply amazing...

  • Kid sounds great. Some of the comments I'm seeing are kind of ridiculous. I see videos of kids practicing in their bedrooms that sound awful that get better comments. I'm sure this guy will only improve as he gets older. He played some great material and his aggressive sound concept has been around for decades; that's nothing new. It's obvious what he's going for and I think he's getting it.

  • Amazing gift are just a head start...hard work and dedication can overcome any talent. he is brilliant for his age...but lets see how he is playing at 30 or even 40.

  • wow!! what a beast :) this guy has got series talent!

  • There's nothing basic about this sax playing, either from a technical or harmonic standpoint. You may like other players more, but Han deserves total respect, especially considering how young he is. He can rip it.

  • Good young player. Spirited, very basic, on many levels very common. But He's rhythmic, expressive. Growing. I hear his influeneces: Kenny Garrett, and Phil Woods. Should try to blur his styles more, and play less notes, not blow as hard as he can all the time...he sounds good, but young.

  • basic...? he's not that basic. and it all depends on what type of style of jazz you like. he doesn't play too many notes, even if you don't like how many notes he plays.

  • yeah, he's good technically but tends to overblow-- some dynamics please?!?

Also less (notes) is often more.

  • Yes. For sure. He's talented, but many here are acting like he's a master. He can play, but there's much work still needed for him to break through to the next level. Oh what's with the old man glasses? Kid got bad eyes already? lol

  • Well first of all Alex Han is what, 21-22 now? Andrew Speight is a teacher at SF state so I bet Alex will be better than Andrew by his age...then again it's all taste.

  • yes and no

  • can anybody tell me the name of the song?

  • dave koz would be proud :-)*

  • seriously? doesn't that cat play smooth shit?

  • Okay..he's having fun!

  • this made me buy altosax and start learning myself

  • holy crap man hes awesome GO ALTO!!!!

  • man, jesus christ thats good. i loved the line into the altissimo early on wonderful.

  • JAWESOME

  • Like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

  • Fuckin' great.

    This guy is a beast.

  • hay que estar demente! =)

  • 2:11, crazyy

  • Anyone know the name if this tune?

  • "yes and no"

  • Yes and No, written by Wayne Shorter I think

  • Right.

  • 1:50-1:55 ... he is playing like a god

  • 1:26 far too good

  • A W E SOME!!

  • its against the law to play that well last I heard

  • yeah dude, i think we all can see why he's playing with marcus miller.

  • Many notes, big sound... The marcus miller dream saxophonist! Nice performer.

  • Nice performer... He's young, maybe it will be better in a few year! I understand why he's playing with Marcus Miller... Many notes, big sound... I don't like but I respect.

  • *claps hands* well done!

  • that comment was not directed at alex han, bruh.

  • neither was mine

  • ps you should probably spell "Trane" right in your profile, bruh.

  • you should probably calm down, bruh.

  • well if you think he's a sellout, tell me who's not.

  • Apparently sounding as commercial as possible gets you famous these days.

  • An absolute stunning performance. Alex Han; the best alto sax player to be alive.

    <3

  • please tell me you're kidding. look up andrew speight, he blows this kid out of the water.

  • YOU ARE A BEAST MY FRIEND!! KUDOS!!!!!

  • He makes me want to play sax!

  • That's 1 of the coolest solo's I've ever heard. Nicely done.
