Wow, this brings back memories of when I first saw Return of the Jedi in the theaters. This scene gives me the chills now as it did back then.Powerful music made this one of the most powerful scenes in cinematic history.
a jedis fury is when someone threatens sonmeone they love. ankian says it in the 3rd one jedis care for others sith love only themselfs so it makes it more powerful.
I've always looked at Luke's face at :28 and thought to myself the symbolism of the lighting. Half of his face is dark, and half is light. I think it is like that to show the conflict between the light and dark side going on inside of his head at this point. Anybody else think that?
@Artstar the 80s and 90s better than today or any time before as we had new technology but it had too be used sparingly so plot and story were the only things that could be emphasized but we could still have used enough cgi to make badass scenes like this one
@makutateridax200 also tv shows could be made fully cgi or fully traditional not inbetween so that ment in the 80s and 90s we had no shit producing capabilities that we have today other than screwing up on plot or the animation being shoddy
p.s. sorry for the grammer problems grade 5 education (got kicked out after grade 6 for behaviour) and computers = shitty grammer
Words cannot describe how much I love this scene. The music is just beautiful and the emotion you get from the characters is amazing. I am a PROUD Star Wars nerd. :D
Hmmmm, cause the light saber looks pretty remastered, same for the picture effect soo that got me curious, From what I was told, the original unaltered if watched now its a joke (back then it was the best obviously) compared to the 90s re-released, the clip Im really looking for is the unaltered 1 or in other terms the joke on how bad it is
My favorite scene out of all the Star Wars movies. This duel was intense, in spirit. Vader and Palpatine constantly tempting Luke with the Dark Side, Luke resisting so well until Vader hits a nerve, then Palpatine torturing Luke as Vader looks on... this whole scene was the best.
I like the look of the sabers better in this trilogy, too. The way they seem flat at times, the precise shades of color and contrast with the environment is much better than the modern effects of the new trilogy.
Whats the drawback of the unaltered DVDs? I hear that its the quality not up to date, but i also hear another reason (something about non-amorphic and how it appears)
I was gonna tell you that there's a playlist on youtube with all the lightsaber duels from all 6 films, but turns out all of them have been deleted already. I'll upload a sequence from the fight scene within a week or so, but I won't edit together the entire scene. I'm a little too busy to be editing stuff at the moment.
You see how this upload is letterboxed within a 4:3 frame with additional black bars on the sides. That's how the official dvd will look on a widescreen television because it is not anamorphic (also known as 16x9 enhanced).
I noticed the way starting at 1:44 until Luke cut off Vader's hand, he was swinging his lightsaber down on Vader's as if hammering a railroad spike into the ground. Also, the music was amazing!
Such a strong scene. I mean, the new films ain't a touch on the originals... but when you think of everything that's happened to Anakin and Luke and even Leia... and then the music and everything... such a sad scene...
I never thought about that, But when he throws the lightsaber away, He chooses death over submission. Its more powerful when you understand it as an adult
@Madfoot713 Never! I'll never turn to the dark side! You've *failed*, your Highness! Incredibly powerful, and yes, you rarely see this kind of emotional depth these days.
@Madfoot713 yeah and not only powerful but strange, it doesn't even hit the floor in this cut apparently, i take it he threw it down the shaft vader sends the emperor to his death with..luke foresaw ; ) ....ok..maybe not
is it just me or has anybody else noticied that when luke is forcing vader back to the bridge his mask makes the sound its in troble likew it does when he has force lightning on him after he kills the emperor listen very carefully it is there.
Yep, because at this point, Vader's mechanical lungs are wearing out. The force lightning is the nail in the coffin - it probably short circuits his machinery. Not to mention the psychological blow of defying his master and the Dark Side.
This scene from episode VI is one of the most emotional and powerful.... Its sends chills...espically if you saw episode III how Anakin became Darth Vader very tragic and sad
I can only imagine what this scene was like in the theaters. It's exactly what you guys have already said: the combination of music, choreography, everything. It's incredible. It was the Star Wars finale. Oops, then Episodes I, II and III came out. And they sucked.
I would also like to comment on how superbly epic this music is without dominating the scene. Unlike that horrible "Duel of Fates" which is Matrixy and over the top.
I agree that this song is awesome, but I also really like Duel of the Fates. However, I do like this song more. Nevertheless, if both of the songs had the same amount of popularity and I hadn't listened to Duel of the Fates so many times, I might like DotF more than I do now.
I think it's because Vader had no intentions of killing Luke. Remember, Palpatine wanted Luke as his new apprentice, and vader was well aware of this. All vader needed to do was convince Luke that the dark side was his true destiny, and then let his son take his place at the emperor's side.
I know this is an old comment, but actually, If you listen to Vader's dialog in Revenge of the Sith and Empire (and if you have played the game The Force Unleashed) then you would know that Anakin/Vader never wants to be the Emperors padawan, he wants to control the galaxy himself.
So he wanted Luke to join him so they can rule the galaxy as father and son.
I remember seeing these scene in the theater 1983 with Vader's threat to Leia and I could not help but say quietly to the screen, "You stay away from her!"
One of my favorite movie seens of all time! Its like the whole trilogy builds a sense of destiny to this one seen. I wish I could remember how powerful this seen was when I watched it for the first time. Truely epic! The male choir in the background really is awesome.
I think the reason Luke's saber appeared heavy was that he was using what he would later call "Strong Style" of lightsaber combat. If you've played "Jedi Outcast" or read any novels featuring the New Jedi Order, you'll know what I'm talking about.
If you watch the commentry etc, the original concept was that lightsabers were like excalibur, really really heavy. You couldn't stop mid-swing you would have to hit something. But as the special effects improved and the audience demanded more... they upt it. Personally I prefer the classic trilogy lightsaber battles to the new ones but that's me :)
I think they changed it when they realized that light really doesn't have any weight, and that to make a beam of light look like a lead pole was just retarded. The Expanded Universe producers took the change and made an in-universe explanation, saying that it was merely a different style of combat, and that the lightsaber was really weightless all along.
Let me just say that I'm an ex-fan through and through. I used to think these films were the greatest things ever...now I just see them as SFX driven flicks with corny dialog.
But the scene where Luke screams "NEVER!" and attacks Vader one last time? Brilliant. The music, the way the camera follows them and just the sheer emotional power of the scene never fails to give me chills.
Lucas' dialogue is terrible, no question - there's a reason Harrison Ford once told him "You can type this s**t, but you sure as hell can't say it."
However, I think the big difference between the originals and the prequels is that because the original actors were largely unknowns, they had a reason to pour everything they had into the scripts, no matter how crappy and stilted they were. Han & Leia's romance takes a giant dump on Anakin & Padme's relationship, that's for sure...
Agreed 100% - John Williams' music has some of the most iconic sounds of the 20th century. After all, what would Jaws be without that ominous opening music?
The soundtrack is combination of the 1983 1992 remixed 1997 remixed and 2005 and remixed again! If you have the first edition of the Star Wars originals on laserdisc, that will be as close as you can get to it, sure the image is analogue, but I don't mind I'll have that twice a day over HD-DVD and Bluray! LONG LIVE laserdisc and DVD down with Bluray!
huh? you go from talking about the soundtrack to the film...the audio is perfect, the mp3 I put up is from some no longer in print CD of the soundtrack...the dvd's used the LaserDiscs are masters so it should be pretty close to the Laser Disc versions.
This scene & the fighting scene in ESB are my favorites but most of all I love the expression on Luke's face when Vader says 'you have a twin sister'. The subtlely of it is just so heart wrenching. And the look on his face in Empire when you can tell he makes the decision to fall to his death rather than join Vader. Yeah, acting goes much further than fancy choreography.
One thing that bugs me about this scene is, where was Luke hiding where Vader couldn't see him? If you think about the layout you have to conclude Luke knew an invisibility mind trick.
Special effects note: When Luke is driving Vader back, think of the rotoscoping required to paint the lightsabers through the obstructions in the foreground. They didn't have computer graphics but even they did that would have been tedious.
Yeah, I'll bet either they did it the hard way or perhaps they optically rendered the lightsabers, then they took the entire worked footage and placed the foreground objects above it.
Either method would have taken a lot of work to look as convincing as it does. Brilliant work by Dennis Muren and the ILM crew!!
about the sword fighting and Lucas continuity. Lucas also emphasized that the fights in the first trilogy and the fights in the second were different. In the new movies we see jedi at the peak of their power. fully trained. Luke had only yoda for a small amount of time and he did his own training on tatooine.
What made these originals so great which the prequels kinda missed was how it balanced action from drama. I mean at the end of the movie, yeah, the Death Star explodes, but the film doesn't lead up to that explosion. It leads up to Luke's confrontation with his father and his destiny. The prequels' were flashier, but the fights weren't nearly as meaningful
One of my favorite moments in film! The music is absolutely epic! The fight is simple, but there's so much intensity to it. Not to mention the dramatic and emotional implication of this scene... absolutely wonderful!
just goes to show that they don't need to be flying around, causing explosions or performing insane martial arts or sword tricks to have an epic battle scene.
umm...I wouldn't say Lucas is smart. In fact Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, widely considered to be the best in the series, weren't directed by Lucas...
i agree with you it is great, and no it doesnt have the flash or the prequels and i love those to, it had depth and emotion and the music is great too, lukes taste of dakrness like anakin's
luke did start back the jedi order. i want to comment on an earlier statenent from a person claiming jacen solo was the greatest jedi in the extended series of star wars. jacen lukes nephew killed his aunt lukes wife. luke confronted jacen known as darth cadeous they engaged in a epic lightsaber duel. luke was the winner of that fight so for that guy who said jacen luke was the greatest jedi in the new star seties. i advise all star war fans to read it
Lol oh that must be it, I was using Internet Explorer. Thanks for the link to the song though, I've been searching for this great song for such a long time X_x.
This is the same version i have. My dad got the first three set they had with all the origenal movies. Although, i think the ones we have were only remastered once, as the new onse have been remastered 2-3 times.
Same here. The score for these movies (the originals) were absolutely wonderful but the one used during this scene is my absolute favorite and the most emotion-filled piece.
Darth vader is the strongest!there are many reasons why he is bitten by like!like first obi wan couth his arms and legs and he become machine!second he is very old!and finaly he dont want to kill his son
Luki won because Luke went to the dark side of the force for a split second, blind rage and fury just like Mace in episode 3...It was Palpatines plan. But in the end it backfired!!! What would Luke's sith name be if he did go to the dark side...
Mace had a very unique fighting style, which involved unleashing all your destructive emotions, while still staying on the Light Side. Mace is the only Jedi in history to use that style; all his Padawans who tried it ended up becoming evil. But NO: Mace had the control and discipline to be able to use his emotions and his passions without touching the Dark
I have to believe that Vader threw that fight on purpose. Remember he was wanting to destroy the emporor himself. He was also trying to prevent his son from turning. He goads Luke so that Luke can defeat him.Luke is never a Match for Vader!
i could never understand why did vader suddenly fall. Perhaps he has tripped over his legs...so much for the guy who would be the most powerful jedi ever...
You have to keep in mind... Vader: cumbersome mechanical limbs combined with a deep internal hesitancy at striking down his own son... Luke: a strong, young, virile body combined with a deep conviction that he is doing the right thing.
also, Luke's just awesome. Sometimes it seems like the Force said "well, that first chosen one didn't work. let's make another." and so luke got chosen one power + son of anakin power. haha
either im seeing sumtin wrong or its as if vader and luke were swinging their sabres slower than usual. as if they had weight on them. which shouldn't happen cuz the only weight on the light sabre is the handle...the blade part of the sabre has no weight
the actors were told to do it that way. Lucas emphasized that sabers were really heavy back then. He changed that in the prequels, because he doesn't give a shit about continuity.
Well, I put a link to download the piece in the description. As far as I know it's John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra, titled "Final Duel/Into The Death Star"
I think Vader knows where Luke is but i think he's playing Jedi mind games he was taught on Luke because Dooku did that to him the only thing that disapoints me is the Sword Duels are kinda lame Vader was better in Revenge Of The Sith
well of course he better have a fricking 200kl si on when he was fightingtell u wot when u were a suit like that and fight eter than that u can coment all u like p.s the original rulz compered to the new
Wow this is wonderful and I downloaded the track as well... thanks so much this is my favourite piece of music from star wars. It brings a tear to my eye when that beautiful fight is panning across the screen, goosebump time!
I listened to the track while watching Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious... it works quite well if you let the big dramatic bit kick in when Sidious draws his saber. :)
Wow, this brings back memories of when I first saw Return of the Jedi in the theaters. This scene gives me the chills now as it did back then.Powerful music made this one of the most powerful scenes in cinematic history.

Luke under estimated the power of the dark side when he threw his lightsaber away
Alector3000 4 years ago 3
This scene & the fighting scene in ESB are my favorites but most of all I love the expression on Luke's face when Vader says 'you have a twin sister'. The subtlely of it is just so heart wrenching. And the look on his face in Empire when you can tell he makes the decision to fall to his death rather than join Vader. Yeah, acting goes much further than fancy choreography.
LkeVelvet 4 years ago 4
When Luke throws away his lightsaber at 2:35, i always expect someone offscreen to go "ow!".
spork24601 4 years ago 3
One thing that bugs me about this scene is, where was Luke hiding where Vader couldn't see him? If you think about the layout you have to conclude Luke knew an invisibility mind trick.
Special effects note: When Luke is driving Vader back, think of the rotoscoping required to paint the lightsabers through the obstructions in the foreground. They didn't have computer graphics but even they did that would have been tedious.
MagicAlDF 4 years ago
Yeah, I'll bet either they did it the hard way or perhaps they optically rendered the lightsabers, then they took the entire worked footage and placed the foreground objects above it.
Either method would have taken a lot of work to look as convincing as it does. Brilliant work by Dennis Muren and the ILM crew!!

about the sword fighting and Lucas continuity. Lucas also emphasized that the fights in the first trilogy and the fights in the second were different. In the new movies we see jedi at the peak of their power. fully trained. Luke had only yoda for a small amount of time and he did his own training on tatooine.
joelng87 4 years ago
yep and apparently lightsabres arent the lightest of objects to swing around either

Shaanyboi 4 years ago 6
One of my favorite moments in film! The music is absolutely epic! The fight is simple, but there's so much intensity to it. Not to mention the dramatic and emotional implication of this scene... absolutely wonderful!
Shaanyboi 4 years ago 5
just goes to show that they don't need to be flying around, causing explosions or performing insane martial arts or sword tricks to have an epic battle scene.
Kristian2006 4 years ago 2
hey i lvoe the flying around and martails arts but yea, lucas is so smart and cool he didnt need that.. for this to be great
cerasi209 4 years ago
umm...I wouldn't say Lucas is smart. In fact Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, widely considered to be the best in the series, weren't directed by Lucas...
Shaanyboi 4 years ago
ok, but they were his stories he is not that great a director but he is a great visionary and storyteller..
ereyes022 4 years ago 3
i agree with you it is great, and no it doesnt have the flash or the prequels and i love those to, it had depth and emotion and the music is great too, lukes taste of dakrness like anakin's
cerasi209 4 years ago
This was the absolute best part of the whole film in the original trilogy, the music was so powerful it just made it what it was....

the music when luke screams out "NO" brings both lament and sadness between this duel of father versus son!...impacting!
Yucrow 4 years ago 5
I agree. I've always loved the music in this scene, extremely powerful.

one of the most dramatic and climactic fight scenes between two great characters in 20th century film

what do you mean its bad quality?
TranBoys 4 years ago
luke did start back the jedi order. i want to comment on an earlier statenent from a person claiming jacen solo was the greatest jedi in the extended series of star wars. jacen lukes nephew killed his aunt lukes wife. luke confronted jacen known as darth cadeous they engaged in a epic lightsaber duel. luke was the winner of that fight so for that guy who said jacen luke was the greatest jedi in the new star seties. i advise all star war fans to read it
ca9999 4 years ago
what?, i though jedi's couldnt fall inlove, it was forbidden! is that how it is in the extended series after darth vader death?
Yucrow 4 years ago
When Luke established his new order he changes some things, such as the no marriage rule. Also, the plural of Jedi is still Jedi
waldoman7 4 years ago
That DVD rip was pretty good. I thought the quality was just fine. (especially for Youtube)

This is the same version i have. My dad got the first three set they had with all the origenal movies. Although, i think the ones we have were only remastered once, as the new onse have been remastered 2-3 times.

The music still gives me the chills!

Same here. The score for these movies (the originals) were absolutely wonderful but the one used during this scene is my absolute favorite and the most emotion-filled piece.

What if Luke were Vader's apprentice? Then no one could stop them!!!!!
juergen 4 years ago
Luki won because Luke went to the dark side of the force for a split second, blind rage and fury just like Mace in episode 3...It was Palpatines plan. But in the end it backfired!!! What would Luke's sith name be if he did go to the dark side...
juergen 4 years ago
darth fury
jedimastercool 4 years ago
Mace never went to the Dark Side.

I remember going, "Whoa!" when Luke went all crazy-eyed on Vader. Beautiful cinematography by the way.
PrussianSunsets 4 years ago
I have to believe that Vader threw that fight on purpose. Remember he was wanting to destroy the emporor himself. He was also trying to prevent his son from turning. He goads Luke so that Luke can defeat him.Luke is never a Match for Vader!
Malkum77 4 years ago
i could never understand why did vader suddenly fall. Perhaps he has tripped over his legs...so much for the guy who would be the most powerful jedi ever...
chimaerabr 4 years ago
You have to keep in mind... Vader: cumbersome mechanical limbs combined with a deep internal hesitancy at striking down his own son... Luke: a strong, young, virile body combined with a deep conviction that he is doing the right thing.
j25mackay 4 years ago
not to mention the anger he used
sega616 4 years ago
One thing I don't get....Vader:35+ years of experience....Luke:like 3 months......how did Vader get beaten so easily?
iakushk 4 years ago
No, Luke had 4 years.

A movie phenomenon known as, "extra mad". Luke got "extra mad".
prayfertrey 4 years ago
Because it's in the prophecy.
jareturns 4 years ago
also, Luke's just awesome. Sometimes it seems like the Force said "well, that first chosen one didn't work. let's make another." and so luke got chosen one power + son of anakin power. haha
waldoman7 4 years ago
But Aniken/Vader is the chosen one. The Jedi were too repressed and self Rightous, and the Sith were too self indulgent and assholes.
Aniken got rid of the Jedi, and the Sith. then left the future of Force Users to Luke.

either im seeing sumtin wrong or its as if vader and luke were swinging their sabres slower than usual. as if they had weight on them. which shouldn't happen cuz the only weight on the light sabre is the handle...the blade part of the sabre has no weight
MPKFC25 4 years ago
the actors were told to do it that way. Lucas emphasized that sabers were really heavy back then. He changed that in the prequels, because he doesn't give a shit about continuity.
waldoman7 4 years ago 3
Whats the name of the music used?? would love to know it!
Madz10 4 years ago
Well, I put a link to download the piece in the description. As far as I know it's John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra, titled "Final Duel/Into The Death Star"
Artstar 4 years ago
I think Vader knows where Luke is but i think he's playing Jedi mind games he was taught on Luke because Dooku did that to him the only thing that disapoints me is the Sword Duels are kinda lame Vader was better in Revenge Of The Sith
BGN2005 4 years ago
well of course he better have a fricking 200kl si on when he was fightingtell u wot when u were a suit like that and fight eter than that u can coment all u like p.s the original rulz compered to the new
kosta354278 4 years ago
Wow this is wonderful and I downloaded the track as well... thanks so much this is my favourite piece of music from star wars. It brings a tear to my eye when that beautiful fight is panning across the screen, goosebump time!
I listened to the track while watching Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious... it works quite well if you let the big dramatic bit kick in when Sidious draws his saber. :)
