The lap dulcimer is said to be one of the easiest string instruments to play, but one of the most difficult to play well. I will say: "You play VERY well!"
Thanks so much. Having this video has really helped me to keep going hearing all the nice comments. I get discouraged being around some of the wonderful players I meet at festivals, but keep plodding along at my own speed :^)
This is one of my favorite dulcimer videos on the web. You play beautifully and put my own skills to shame. Fast technical playing is not as gorgeous as the emotion you get out of your instrument.
very very nice. wish i could do this, just cannot get the hang of it. i have a mcspadden hourglass and its like it doesn't like me. you, however, sound like both of you belong together. keep up the fabulously, beautiful entertainment.
Very Nice. I met Larry at the first festival he and I went to in Mt View and have playing together ever since. You did a great job on this tune, one of my very favorites. Keep up the ggo work. Linda Brockinton
There are usually some on ebay, but not all are really playable. Do a search for McSpadden Dulcimers in Mt View Arkansas, Gila Mountain Dulcimers in Capitan, New Mexico, or Blue Lion in California. Any of these can be bought sight unseen and be a great instrument. I'm playing a Gila Mountain in this video, but my first good dulcimer was a McSpadden. The Blue Lion is a little pricier, but not necessarily any better than the other two.
Larry Conger is my uncle. I think he will be amazed to see someone on YouTube playing one of his arrangements. I have loved listening to him play dulcimers since I was little girl! You play this arrangement so well. Keep playing and we might see you at one of the dulcimer festivals. Thank you for sharing!
Why, thank you so much! I was so disappointed I didn't get to meet him in Mountain View this spring, but I was taking hammered dulcimer classes and he was always surrounded by his students. I have always loved the finesse of his playing.
Ordered my dulcimer today based on the lovely sound of the one you are playing. Thanks for pointing me to Gila Mountain. Out of curiosity, how long have you been playing?
I got my first dulcimer in 1988 but didn't go to first festival until 1990. I started taking it seriously a year or so later, but my learning curve was slowed down because there weren't any other players around to help me learn as everyone in our area was just learning as well. It helps tremendously to be around folks who know what they're doing to help you push your limits. Check for festivals in your area. Good luck with your new baby!
Your playing is so beautiful.... so musical! Really lovely phrasing. What a pleasant listen! Nice up-close view of dulcimer and fingering, but I wanted to see your face, too. Peggy Carter
Thanks! It's student model Gila Mountain dulcimer. you can do a search to find her site. They won't let me post url's here. Kerry has several models and they all sound lovely and are quite well made.
Beautiful playing. I hope that you, your family and your dulcimer stayed dry during all the rain that has been hitting Texas recently. Post some more videos. your fingerpicking style sounds great.
Having this little video on here has been great for my ego. When I'm around all the great dulcimer players I feel so inadequate. Folks have been so kind to take the time to let me know they like my stuff. We do hope to get a few more videos up soon, just haven't found the time yet. Thanks so much for posting :^)
Thanks for the info and the compliment. i figured it must have been something like that, but never took the time to read all the fine print. Guess it's a good rule, though, to keep things safe. BTW, I'm 58, lol. If there are others players around you it can help tremendously. There aren't many in my area, so I had to learn most on my own unless I went to festivals.
Oh my...that is beautiful. I think I got a little weepy listening to that tune. You have such a delicate and smooth touch on the strings and fretboard and the little flourishes are perfectly suited to the character of the music. Well done!
Thanks so much! I wish I could take full credit for the arrangement, but have to give Larry Conger the credit there. Would you believe I was at week long workshop in Arkansas while he was there and never got a chance to meet him?
What a sweet thing to say! I hope you're able to find other players in your area as that certainly makes it easier to learn. One suggestion when you get started, keep it out in the open where you can grab it any time the mood hits. While watching tv, just keep it in your lap and practice different strumming and fingering with right hand only. That will help with the muscle memory.
Really nice playing mate! I have an old friend, Terry Hennessy who is a luthier and has built a couple of very famous dulcimers in his time, including those of th 'late' Richard Fariña.
I have tried to respond to the request regarding tab twice and it gets removed. I guess I'm not allowed to post the url of where I found the book. Perhaps it's ok to tell you to do a search for Larry Conger. It's basically his arrangement.
Thank you so much, I did find the piece a couple weeks ago, right now I do the easy part (see my videos), and my teacher Tish she plays the hard part. I am totally hooked on Larry Conger now!! Someday I hope to play it as well as you do.
well, I'm not sure if it was in tune at the time since I did the recording in the wee hours of the night, but I usually have it tuned to DAD unless I need to sing something in C, then it's CGC
Yes, the second tune is Dvorak, but also known as Going Home. There is a wonderful vocal rendition in the old movie "The Snakepit" well worth checking. The first tune is by Robert Burns.
Sweet!
