This song is called Plaza Real from the Weather Report album, "Procession". Having seen an earlier incarnation of Wayne's band play it, along with most of the material Wayne was writing in the mid to late eighties, I can say that this music has nothing to apologize for. Today's audiences (even jazz audiences) are a lot less curious-ergo not as intelligent than even 20 years ago...
I was Tom Brechtleins drum roadie for this tour, the whole tour was amazing and turned me on to jazz, big time. In '87 I was Teri lyn Carringtons roadie as well as looking after the percussion set up for Marylin Mazur, also a great tour, Phantom Navigator remains my favourite Wayne Shorter album.
I'm gonna agree with kundalani76 and say that the first section of this piece is Plaza Real, although it never quite releases the tension as Weather Report played it. Which of course is one of the reasons that makes it so brilliant. Thanks for this!
@Vasycek 'Plaza Real' by Weather Report, on their 1983 album 'Procession', then @8:23 goes into Shorter's classic 'Footprints', and how I wish I could hear the rest after being blown away by Wayne's genius here!
@kundalini76 Are you sure about the name - I checked out a sample of Plaza Real on Amazon; it sounds not at all like this piece, although it's only a 30 sec. bit.
This is the 1985 North Sea Jazz Festival, I know it because I was there and I never forgot this show, it was the best. It was shortly after Weather Report had ended, and this was the opening song. Can you imagine the impression it made? I remember Herbie Hancock being at the PA watching his friend's performance with two gorgeous women. I'd love to see the rest of the gig on here if anyone has it...
ya man the most intense sax solo i have ever seen on youtube has got to be john coltrane my favorite things they r leaving there bodies and going to a different place and they r pushing themselves to an extent you nor i could ever imagine look at the drummer bass player and piano they r steaming they are playing so intensely.
I wouldn't exactly identify this as the "most intense piece ever" but it is an incredibly great example of band interaction.
I think my favorite "most intense piece ever" on youtube is the John Coltrane version of My Favorite Things that is 7 minutes long. No Dolphy in that one.
i'm not sure anything wayne shorter played after about 1973 could be considered that "intense" i would say romantic or sentimental is more accurate. but enough splitting hairs, good music is good music.
You obviously have not listened to any of his Quartet stuff in the past 10 years(some great versions of Go, footprints, etc)or his album he did with Herbie"1+1"....listen.....

Have you heard anything he's made since 2000? It's only equaled, IMO, by the 1969-70 Miles band or Eric Gravatt/Miroslav Vitous-era Weather Report.
