I was there, 14 yrs old at the time, even got a picture of the wreckage getting loaded on a tow truck at the end of the day down in the shutdown area. Crazy wreck for sure.
I saw this crash live, was standing at the fence on the pit side. When the car went vertical, the body disintegrated and came down in pieces like snow. He slid backwards on fire, and the sand trap at the end of the shutdown area put the fire out.
Saw this crash with my own eyes. 1994 Winternationals ( listen to the track announcer at the start of the video), Pomona California. Flew right over the trap lights. Never tripped them.
Shelly Payne ( Anderson ) was burned from a T/F crash and I think very soon after , all drivers were mandated to wear FC boots , suits and gloves . Shelly needed some skin grafts from that one .
I saw this one live. I got a piture of what was left (cage and motor) being dragged up on a flat bed tow truck in the shutdown area after saturday qualifying was over. The whole crowd got real quiet watching that car slide toward the sand trap hoping he would not be hurt to bad or killed. Scary wreck for sure.
U said it man. U should watch ...and they walked away 3. I have it on VHS. 1 of the replays pauses right when the car was passing the camera with flames completely surrounding him. It scared me 2 c that.
I believe the date of his fatal accident was May 1995, in Dallas, during a match race at the Motorplex. He went over the wall and hit one of the scoreboard vertical supports. And just think: at half the NHRA big tracks, the scoreboards are still a hazard. You'd hope people would learn.
Good thing they moved the supports at the motorplex after his accident. Now instead of being right next to the wall they are,,,,,about eight feet from the wall.Always heard they didnt move them further because it would look bad in a lawsuit.
Nix actually ran a few more races after this crash, his last race was the final race of 1993, and runner uped to Rance McDaniel that day. Then he quit.
