  • this and cascadas version both awsome

  • Esse bebê quer é chupar o extrato de porra que sai do meu pau,ITAÚ,boquete, boquinha linda

  • Still rocks Frankie says!!!

  • A great song but all of us here at Zimbabwe thought that it was originally written and performed by Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the 1970's or there abouts.

  • A cool new article on Patti.

  • i get so emotional with this classy piece of heaven of a song. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuukk <3

  • just because...

  • Long Life, Miss Patti Smith. <3

  • prefer the cascada's version ...... nah i'm just kidding xD

  • Patti is way cool.

  • Patti and Bruce co-wrote this song. One of my favorites.

  • @jmm7145 Bruce originally wrote this song for the Darkness on the Edge of Town album. He gave it to Patti and she re-wrote some parts. Patti is awesome and kills this song! But it definitely has a Bruce Springsteen feel.

  • Perfect

  • Love is a banquet on which we feed...

  • Timeless expression of what to people can feel...

  • @duhmedia - Patti and Bruce wrote it together.

  • Springsteen wrote it.

  • happy birthday to patti!

  • Patti smith is a god!

  • Bruce Springsteen's version is nice too.

  • saw her in Amsterdan 2005 at the Melweg quite the night to say the least take care girl

  • By far the best balls to the wall female rocker.

  • the only good cover of this song is by keel

  • The ORIGINAL !!!! it is very very very very goodddd

  • :)

  • The Natalie Merchant covers blows compared to this...

  • ;o) One of the best ever..!! Nice Voice.!

  • I thought that Natalie Merchant's version was better than Ms. Smith's for the following reason;Miss merchant holds nothing back, Ms. Smith appears like she's holding her soul back from the track. You've got to let it all hang out sometimes, and, to me, Ms. Smith doesn't do that.

  • @kja427 Really? I try to avoid silly arguments over whose version was better, but this one I just don't understand. Totally agree that you've gotta let it all hang out sometimes, but I'm simply not capable of comprehending how you think Natalie Merchant has more soul than Patti Smith. I really can't. Her version is so reserved.

  • Patti Smith, with her Frumpy clothing, and lack of make-up, and undying love for Fred Sonic Smith.... Patti , My only regret in Life, is that I didn t know you...

Good Women are at a Premium these days... God Bless you Doll...

  • My mother met her yesterday in Paris, on a restaurant. I am a little jealous. Incredibile voice and style.

  • Was first performed live (with Patti Smith) at CBGB's in New York City on December 30, 1977. I was there for that performance...

  • im just glad they made it

  • Take my hand come undercover

  • Check out my cover of this song !

    Thank you :)

  • free Wayne Kramer!

  • <3

  • Listen to "Blinded by the Light " . Different artist, still great.

  • @brokegenius2011 Manfred mann was a killer concert in Germany ( Heidelberg )1980

  • No rebutle .Good information

  • I listened to the one by Bruce Springsteen!! As I said before, he's the WORST singer in the world and I still say it!!!!!!!! Patti does this song much better and makes it more with feeling, Bruce all he did was scream it and you can't really understand the words by him!! Patti's is much better, 1,000,000,000 times!!!!!!!!!! I never heard it by Bruce until now and I don't ever want to hear it by him again!!!!!!!!!

  • @starladodge4 I respect your opinion and you're entitled to it. However, if you think Bruce Springsteen is the worst singer in the world I'd like to know what the music's like on Mars or whichever planet you're from.

  • @starladodge4 Sorry, but there's a difference between having an opinion and being ridiculous and you probably crossed it with that one. Did you bother to listen to anything else by him before saying he was the worst singer in the world just because you prefer Patti Smith's version of one song? If I were you, I'd try searching "I'm On Fire" and seeing if you still feel that way.

  • because fuck you

  • This words of this song are so powerful, especially when she sings it!

  • this music is very perfecttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.........amazing.....i luv,luv,luv!rsrsrsrrsrrrsrsr

  • patti sings with more passion.all i thought about was bangin her when i saw this the first time-i believe her when she sings it.natalie merchant good looking lady but i dont feel a stirring in my nether regions-i just dont buy her version.

  • What an amazing voice

  • Love it. She is truly great.

  • I wish I was born in 1964 instead of 1994..my generation's music sucks.

  • SHE'S COMING TO SINNER'S DAY 2011 IN THE ETHIAS ARENA IN HASSELT, BELGIUM!!! 30 October.

  • all this Bruce this Bruce that...whatever. This may be her biggest song to the masses but it's nowhere near her best. So If i was a mere cover no sweat off my back Smith proved she had alot more to offer than this.

  • Excellent, I don t want to be let down, the best thing since Janis (Joplin) 1967- u were a baby then, -- imagine , sweet thing ,and 2011 , Paint it Black , :))

  • great song,great Patti Smith

  • That's a so.... I can't describe it... is there a more than the best?

  • wraio tragoudi!

  • @turbotoken you're a tool and know nothing about style or being true to ones self. Patti is Patti, what you see is what you get. She is amazing!

  • THIS IS EPIC

  • Comment removed

  • yo tambien estoy aqui por LA OGRA que todo lo logra

  • Natalie Merchant does great version of this, yes. but the way that Patti's band responds to her (you may have to check out a few videos) is unparalleled. She commands. The timing relies on Patti. Only.

  • Patti Smith is good but she is no Natalie Merchant. Flame away.

  • If you like to read and have not yet read "just kids", buy it.

  • @turbotoken where the hell is your dignity man? Stop talking shit about things you dont now about.

  • Her one and only good song is Because The Night, Otherwise she dresses like a bum, above that she has a mustache. Where is the dignity?

  • @turbotoken Listen to one album - 'Horses' maybe. Not one single song on there to your taste (Free Money for example if you like this one) then to each ear his own. As to the looks, I guess MTV saved you - no one looks crap anymore.

  • I cant think of any alive artist that can deserve the polarprize more than Patti Smith.

  • Springsteen and Smith wrote this song together...

  • Goddess!

    Congratulations !

    "Polar Music Prize 2011"

  • I don't think I've heard a version of this song that I DIDN'T love! I grew up with the 10k Maniacs version, so that's my go-to when I want to hear this, but every version I've heard has been wonderful in it's own way.

  • it wasn't covered by Bruce Springsteen. he co-wrote it.

  • Yeah, it's lip synched. The vocals are identical to the recorded version.

  • Because You Rocked my F*&^% Soul! You had me with radio ethiopia!

she Kicked my A&^ Many, many years ago at a concert In Central park!

    Thank you patti!

  • sexiest ugmo hahahah

  • I'm not sure I'm right about the lip synching, just raising the idea to see what others think...

  • @Yoda4peace i think it has more to do with someone using the studio version of the song and placing it over this live performance video. That's what i think anyways

  • @Yoda4peace She's not lip synching-the soundtrack is off in this video.

  • HUGE fan of Patti Smith, but it seems to me that she is lip synching on the chorus toward the end of this rendition. The vocals sound exactly like the studio version.

  • Comment removed

  • @Yoda4peace I was always under the impression that all Old Grey Whistle Test performances were 100% live, including all instruments. If I am wrong, I apologise.

  • She is such a legend!!! I am so excited to hear her new album Outside Society that drops 8/23!!!

  • @sydneyandersonband

It's just a rerelease of all her songs, I hope she doesn't turn into the Beatles, releasing a new 100 dollar boxset of all her old material every two years just to remind people that she exists

  • it was springsteen who wrote the song to patti smith in the 70s

  • @MegaGamer506 Actually Springsteen wrote the melody, and just one line in the song, the rest is all Patti Smith. It was actually a demotape that Springsteen couldnt quite finish, so Patti like I said, the melody was already there, and just ONE line, and then Patti finished the song, which is written to Fred "Sonic" Smith, her future husband!

  • @TPHBFAN That's not true, listen to Bruce's version from the Darkness sessions (just released in 'The Promise') and check it for yourself line by line. She uses almost the entire original first verse, almost the entire original second verse, the chorus is identical to Bruce's, then the final break she uses about half his original lines. Overall she rewrote maybe 1/4th of the lyrics to her version of the song. She did well but she didn't write all but one line, that's just false.

  • @TPHBFAN @danyramoon Funny how both you guys got the top comment and you clearly contradict each other despite putting forward what you say as a fact. :/

  • i love you patty ian mortiz from mexico city

  • Thumbs up if this song makes you fart

  • timeless, immortal, genius.....

  • I'd like to honor Patti on a Patti video and thereby leave any comments about any other artists/musicians or about music today sucking or any of that junk off of it. This is a Patti video, here she is singing with all her soul and being, giving her whole self, and it's awesome. Are other people good doing this song too? Sure but let's leave those remarks for their videos and just enjoy, feel the magic of this, and be grateful for youtube so that we still get to see this, yeah? Patti is legend.

  • @alicitapalomita Couldn't agree more, those comments are getting tiresome, who cares what everyone else does when we have Patti? P.s her book Just Kids is a rare privilege to read and I'd recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

  • you mean Natalie does not? BETTER GET YOUR EARS AND SOUL CHECKED

  • anyone see bruce absoultely kill this on fallon? [and i use kill as a complement]

  • pure magic.

  • @TheEpicMusicChannel I know she's just my stock answer when people start comparing covers......come ONJ doing Because the Night. has to bring a chuckle.

  • PATTI YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Springsteen is phenomenal writer and Patti is a great interpreter of this song.

  • This is not "there song" This song was written by Patty Smith and Bruce Springstein.

  • is very very very good

  • Keel also covered this, it became their biggest hit. But, I don't think any version beats this one.

  • i'm only 2 months old and i still love this song!!!

  • @defuserable fuck!

  • Patti ! nice ... because the night belongs to lovers <3

  • Not bad, as far as covers go, but Bruce's original is untouchable.

  • Wow, Patti is the shit.

  • Sorry, I missed it. Who does the night belong to again?

  • @AllUrUtubeRbelong2me

when this song was made, it actually belonged to the drug addled, sex crazed rock n roll lovers of the world

  • @AllUrUtubeRbelong2me .... I think it belong2you. LOL Check out "Shadow on the wall" by mike oldfield. You'll never guess what on the wall.

  • @forgetitohio LOL. Well done sir, well done.

  • This is when singers sang with their souls...

  • @TheDorr71 there are plenty now of days as well don't fall into the stereotypical shell that so many others are seduced into

  • I remember hearing a version of this many years ago as a duet with Bruce Springsteen and Patt.i NOT the U2 Version. Anyone know the one I'm talking about?

  • I love Bruce Springsteen, I do like her voice singing it better. BUt it was actually written by Bruce springsteen. He didnt cover it. It was his song. lol

  • Fuori orario, cose mai viste ovvero il mio sonnifero..............

  • I had a dream about Hedwig and the Angry Inch covering this song. It was amazing. <3

  • @ObscenityOlivia That's an AWESOME dream!!!! lol!

  • Love you BABY! Quit yer yappin' and listen fools.

  • I met Patti a few weeks ago. She was so extremely sweet. It was over 90 degrees out and she was only supposed to sign books (outside) for an hour and a half. She made sure to sign everyone's books and it ended up taking almost 3 hours. She is an incredible writer and performer. Love her!

  • at first i thought she's a guy...before i knew who's the singer

but she is amazing and her virsion is better than Bruce's. of course

  • i would love to see bruce singing this song

  • great song, so powerful.

  • I love Patti Smith!!!!

  • he wrote some of the song, she finished it. If you like Bruce's version go listen to his & not this one. Artist's perform others songs all the time. It's your choice on what to listen to. I prefer this version.

  • Bruce wrote this song. It's his. SHE is covering it.

  • this song rocks!

  • For those of you who don't have a clue, Bruce Springsteen wrote this song with her. He never released it, but did record it during the darkness on the Edge of Town sessions. . He ended up giving it to Patti to record, and that's the version we know. Springsteen never "covered" it; it was his song.

  • THE NIGHT IS OURS MY LOVE AND OURS ONLY.....

  • i dont get how people can be so naive about whos version is better. bruce wrote the song, and found it was better suited for patti, grow the fuck up and enjoy the music

  • @danyramoon Actually, Bruce wrote almost the entire song and then sent it to her so that she could write the end. At that time, she had a long distance relationship with one of the members in the E Street Band. She felt that the song fit perfect to her voice and the lyrics appealed to her.

  • @andhalped hahah Actually that bruce recorded it for his album darkness on the edge of town, didnt like the sound. in the studio nextdoor however the patti smith group was recording Easter and the producer of both bruce and patties records gave it to patti, she liked it added to it recorded it and released it not some bullshit wannabe romance story. next time dont be a hero if your as wrong as you are this time ahahah

  • @danyramoon I'm confused.. who's song is it originally?

  • @MichelRaeMusic well its both there song but bruce originally wrote it and felt it was better suited for patty so she released it

  • I fear for the future of music! At least we can all look to the past and hear that music used to be awesome. It wasn't about what you looked like, it was about talent! That is the way it should be!!

  • very heavy sad song to listen to

  • AWESOME SHE GIVES OFF SOME MUCH ENERGY ! SIT BACK AND TAKE IT ALL IN :)
