  • this is the hardest ostinato for me(and of course any variation of the clave) i feel most comfortable with this one(don't know the name) 0 0

    0 0 0

now that i wrote it out it's 2 over 3(it's been forever since i've read music, and i've never written stuff down).... but does it have a name?

  • @xxxslayerxxx666 wtf.....it goes boom daboom boom boom daboom lol

  • @xxxslayerxxx666 : yeah, that would an appropriate way to write downthose twisted rhythms. Sorry for the late reply.

  • @xxxslayerxxx666 : hello ! just make a vid of this ostinato, that would be easier ! And that clave ostinato you're writing about is evil !!! I watched Horacio Hernandez with Michel Camilo on the song 'Fire'. EVIL !

  • this is nice and so tasteful and musical. much enjoyed.

  • great played!

  • Dude thats a shitty high - hat no offence. And do start to just free jam during the vid? :P

  • @KurdtKobain09

Not sure of what you mean exactly :^) but, yeah, everything's a matter of taste. This was the hi-hat I could afford at that time.

And most of the drumming you hear in this vid was planned before the recording on music sheets...only a few bars were improvised. I followed Trilok Gurtu's song structure for 95%.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  • @earcandy Free jam - i just mean improvise, make your own stuff up as you go along.

  • @KurdtKobain09 what's wrong with the hh?

it seems perfectly ostinato to me..

  • @adamo89 I think he-she means that the sound of the hi-hats could be better ^^ it is indeed quite aggressive, but I love it ^^

  • I forget...an ostinato is when you have a constant rhythm on the bottom and you can do whatever on top of that right?

  • @KurdtKobain09 : indeed, and it also work for example if you play a constant rhythm on your right hand and solo freely on 'top' of it with the other limbs.

  • @earcandy dude your playing is fucking awesome :)

  • sweet...you own those weird time signatures

  • This sounds great.. like the use of meter!

  • nice drumming mate... may i know who's ur main influence? .. your style is different..

    thx

  • Like you, I love Mangini and Donati, but my fav' one is Bozzio ;-)

  • I love Mangini and donati as well.. but i would say my strongest influence is Dave Weckl and dave dicenso .. :) ..

    Keep on drumming mate!! =D

  • @earcandy .... to my knowledge Terry Bozzio invented this sort of solo drumming over ostinato`s .... maybe someone else did it before him but Terry without a doubt got everyone else doing it .... regarding Mike Mangini .. he has amazing chops but he is , in my opinion , a cheap clone of Terry Bozzio ... i used to see him in boston when he was a teenager .. total terry clone ..roto toms , china`s way up high ... the whole nine yards

  • Nice groove dude, keep up the good work, yeah trilok gurtu is a great drummer and percussionist...hes probably one of my favorite drummers....

  • Mmm, I'd really love to see you in action, funny boy.

  • yea right

  • Awesome... I really like it

  • very-very musical, i hope i can more musical just like you. :) Awesome metric modulation on 4:02. :)

  • 3 over 4 on both feet. love it!

  • Did you doubt at the very end what finish you would give or were you counting the last counts to end in time?

It looked kinda cute - not being able to decide how to properly finish this perfect piece.

  • Thanks ! Good comment. In fact, the song which is the base I used for that piece, 'Old African', ends with a fade out...so I decided to go on and finish ad libitum. I did not count and I didn't really hesitate...but yeah, I should've thought of something more consistent to conclude ! I'll take care of this next time ;-) ;-)

  • That's one beat up china! Could you explain ostinato?

  • an ostinato is just a repeating pattern

  • Thanks a lot for your question !

The snare is a Yamaha Steve Gadd Signature Birch 13". The batter head is Evans Genera G2 Coated. And the resonant is something like Evans Resonant, a thin head. No particular tuning. Just P.F.T.

Pretty f*ck*¨ng Tight, as Chad Smith once said during a clinic.

    Hope it'll helps.;-)

  • did you write it or is there sheet music out there?

  • Hi, thanks for you interest.

I wrote music sheets for this solo indeed. In order to build a (quite simple) structure, I chose a song ('Old African' by Trilok Gurtu on the verrrry good album 'African Fantasy'). Its time signature is 12/8, very cool to play polyrhythms with. Then I chose different feet ostinatos. And on top of that, I play with my hands the voice melody.

The rest is just trying to be spontaneous when recording that solo.

  • dude this was awesome. how long have u bin playin?

  • Thanks ! I've been banging the drums for 20 years (started at 7) but I've been trying to PLAY MUSIC for 10 years ! ;-)

  • you're playing is perfect ! 5 stars ! great ostinato!

  • Awesome, man! That's a really well constructed solo with some cool ideas. You have a really good sound, too. I love playing around with ostinatos. Check out some of my stuff if you get the chance!

  • amazing !!!! Give me some pointers bro

  • Excellent work man!!

  • Thanks, Matt. Your vidz are great as well !
