It was done in virtual box with 3d accelleration enabled... i cant remember what video driver i did, i either did the one that was on my real computer or if there was a generic one i did that one. I could never get compiz to work though through virtualbox...
You have to install them via package manager or manually. I was using arch linux to show this. You can change the .xinitrc and tell it which manager to load. Then type startx, of course after setting up X windows.

Just a nitpick but you can use alternate shells in windows which is roughly equivalent to using a different window manager in unix.

Did you have to install them all before accessing them? Or can I just logout and be able to boot into any one of these?
