The problem with this intro is the lance commander's total lack of tactical thought. Attacking a full lance of heavies on his own was basically suicide. He wasn't spotted, so he could've easily ducked back behind cover and attempted to set up an ambush- he had enough firepower to make a quick kill if he can set up back shots, and potentially buy time to hook up with other defensive elements.

@vesposito27 nah, not really. To be fair to him, he KNOWS it's a lost cause, so he's just trying to distract them long enough that the civilians can get away. However, I agree with you that this is best done by playing cat and mouse. Then again, basically, at this point the whole battle is lost, so he just wants to go out in a blaze of glory.

@tabaluka Assault mechs are incredibly rare and expensive, it's much more likely ( from a lore perspective at least) that a minor noble would have at most a lance of light mechs, with maybe the lance leader in a medium-light mech, when you consider the C-bill maintenance cost of keeping even a heavy mech in action, the cost of a assault mech ( the majority of which are salvaged clan omnimechs) would be ludicrous

@tabaluka Keep in mind that salvaged clan mechs are expensive as shit in the Inner Sphere and that a Clan heavy can bring up the same firepower as an IS assault. Also is Kentares a fairly small world.

MW4 sucked in the respect it introduced clan mechs, which is also why the MP sucked. Everyone was running a Dire Wolf because you could just pick one. Now in MWLL you have to earn yourself your Timer Wolf by being freaking goos at fighting, the way it's meant to be.

I meant not that clan mechs are in MW4 at all, but that the difference between a clan mech and an IS mech was meager. They were not pictured as rare and super expensive but just a better mech you could just pick for yourself. This isn't really reflecting that which the canon says about clan mechs.

Just like the tabletop game. All it takes is one bad crit roll to reduce a brand new mech to rubble...or on the other end of the spectrum, there are times you sit there and soak damage and never go down. Strategy and tactics are 90% of it, but sometimes it comes down to that 10% BS luck, for better or worse. Last week we were playing and lost 2 of our heaviest mechs first round...one took a gauss to the face, the other overheated and had an ammo explosion on a 3+ roll.

I'm not too familiar with battletech, but I'm pretty familiar with MW4 Mercs... and well, for a given number of C-Bills and tonnage, light mechs will bring more energy power on target than an equal price or tonnage of heavier mechs, simply because all mechs have an amount of natural cooling ability with no heatsinks. Pulse lasers throw out the most damage (and heat) per ton per second even if they lack the punchy sniping advantage of other beams. And they're easy to use. All meaning cheap!

Actually I only said that because I mistook the mad dogs for vultures, so the only mech that could use long tom would then be a shadow cat. If they wanted to prepare properly, they would've surrounded the palace in a moat. Then they would have hired a bunch of rookie pilots and a copious amount of light mechs, filling the entire moat. Each mech would have as many pulse lasers as could possibly fit on them, and a few heatsinks. It'd be cheap and super effective!

Mixing them makes for a more realistic battle encounter in the field. As the Clans pushed during the initial invasion, the IS stole their 'Mechs and equipment, levelling the playing field so the IS would stand a chance against them.

I think they should have used the three missile mechs as a screening force while the shadow cat armed with a single long tom sneaks behind the palace and fires artillery shots over it at the attacking mechs, using the palace as a shield. Then victory may have been had!

No matter what material is used, it can still be destroyed. The point is to protect it from attack, not use it as a shield.

A better way to hoid off an attack and minimise casualties ('Mech and palace staff) is to use get long range 'Mechs to put down cover fire while moving the faster, lighter 'Mechs to move in under the LRM cover and hit the enemy at close range.

You might need to adjust mouse sensitivity. What control set-up were you using HerticORwhitey? The standard control scheme is rarely used in most PC games today since the MechWarrior series was meant to be played more as a simulator, not a run-and-gun-die-and-respawn FPS.

I'll need more details to accurately assess your control issue. There are numerous ways to configure your set-up, but which way you go depends on your preference and experience.

MechWarrior just takes some getting used to. :D

I think the mech the main character in the intro was in is called a Mad Dog. The 2 types of enemy mechs shown are Nova Cats and Uziels. Im not totally sure of the other types, but one of them (the one blown up exiting the hangar) looked like a Puma.

They didn't run out of the hanger because they would have been running into each others. Mechs do not get good traction on any form of concrete, or technically ferrocrete if you follow the gameplay, per tabletop rules, mechs run on roads they skid and fall about 40-60% of the time

An assault mech costs nearly a billion C-Bills and would cost the same of 2 entire lances of medium and lights mechs. Tyhe defence forces in the is video had 3 ravens, 2 cougars, 1 shadowcat, and 1 vulture. The ravens and the other cougar are in the back ground.

Them having clan mechs isn't so surprising if you remember that this games is set after Taskforce Serpent's victory on Huntress. After Victor returns to the FedCom he brings back alot of captured clan hardware. Although I still think they had too many clan mech in the video. you should be able to run mech4 mercenaries just fine - runs on a duron900 with 256mb of pc133 ram and a geforce2 without problems - running it on a sempron2600, 256mb ddr400 ram with S3 Graphics Unichrome Pro onboard graphics atm, with full settings like on the duron, no problems.
