  • Are you kidding me? People are still arguing about believing Johnny Cash wrote this song? Perhaps he (Johnny) changed a word in the entire finished version of his song (as did Trent to make it radio-friendly, but Johnny to exclude cursing and pay homage to his devout Christianity) and may have changed the musical arrangement, but that certainly does not justify the argument that he WROTE THE SONG! If you don't know what you're talking about, the internet is FULL of info. Learn how to read.

  • You guys are wasting your time debating on a never ending fight. And for the sake of argument, we will never know about the song. Take it up with Trent Reznor if you really want to know.

  • i think they both were inspireing to there fans, in the end trent worked with cash on the last tecording.>thats the main reason there were never any copyright issues > the song underlineing the ultimate truth of life itself and its ultimate conclusion we will all share..

  • @chuckewhitt well both are great songs the NIN original sounds much darker while the Cash version just has a huge underlying sadness to it

  • it's good, surprisingly...

  • @EdwardCullenHatesYou You're a fucking moron, go crawl back into the hole that you came from dummie. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

  • @blairjere1 i never even commented on this song, you stupid twat.

  • @EdwardCullenHatesYou One week ago asshole, it was flagged as spam. Look for youself stupid, it's right there above this thread. Don't go on Youtube when your drunk, knuckle-head.

  • @blairjere1 why are you responding to 'spam' ? again, you're a twat.

  • I'm also one of the guys who only know this song cause of Cashs cover. Never the less I think, they are both really good an impressive in their own way. NIN got their remarkable style and Cash got his amazing voice with that awesome history, he went through.

  • love the song, and to quel all the arguments trent was so impressed with cash's version he gave the rights to him. both songs are epic. the song was wrote by some one who has felt so much pain and he delivered it with that raw pain. it was covered by cash who poured his regret into it.

  • who died?

  • Jesus, this song aint about cutting. It's about heroin. Stop your emo bullshit.

  • @BigtodyIsMighty Isn't

  • @BigtodyIsMighty

If they want to make it about cutting then let them be. Every person has different takes on songs. I see it as the pain of losing things, dying, growing older, coping. I take it as pain in general. It might be about heroin, but I relate to it in the way that I'm on a downward spiral, losing everyone, and trying so hard to regain my sanity and everything I've LOST to people, drugs, and change.. Ya know? You might see it another way. No ones view is right or wrong, JUST saying.

  • @BigtodyIsMighty It's about neither. It ends the story of The Downward Spiral, which was a concept album. This is about neither heroin nor self mutilation. The song touches on drug-use with the line "the needle tears a whole", but the song doesn't revolve COMPLETELY around drug use.

  • wasnt aware this was the original.just came across it while listening to j.c's version. love it, im officialy a NIN junky!!!

  • The original (NIN) is definitely better.

  • i have known johnny Cash's version was a cover for a while, this is my first time listening to the original and im now torn between the 2 .i like both a lot

  • Having listened to both this version (the original), and Johnny Cash's version (the cover), I find that both are very powerful, emotional, and beautiful in their own respective ways. Each reflects the emotional state of the artist, and is more in tune with the emotional foundations of its target audience. Because I am more of a country listener, I tend to lean toward the Cash version. No knock on NIN, this version is great. But for me, the Cash version is more than just a song. This one isn't.

  • Actually i believe J.C's is a lot more emotional jus based on the fact it was his goodbye song, which is rlly wat he said when the video was finally produced

  • Good song

  • @chanc812

Are you trying to be funny? Cause I don't get the humor. In fact I find that extremely insulting ._.

People cut because they'd rather feel physical pain rather then emotional pain, in alot of cases its caused by a mental disorder like depression, bi polar, etc.

  • It's about escape.

self inflicted pain, drugs (alchohol)... whatever fucks you up, hurts you and masks what's already hurting.

Try drinking, its great for that.

  • Watch Plumb's video "cut". People cut to relieve emotional pain............

  • No people cut to get high i dont but some people i no have and do it to get high

  • I think it may also be about self-injury or cutting. "I hurt myself today-- to see if I still feel." and "The feelings disappear." and, um, "HURT."

To me, it's pretty obvious that this is about self-injury, because I've undergone and quit both drugs and cutting... but I may be wrong.

  • I always thought it was about drugs because of "The needle tears a hole", "Full of broken thoughts", and "I will let you down"

  • It can be taken either way. It depends on which version you're listening to. If it's the Johnny Cash version, yes it's obviously about drugs. Cash's life was completely destroyed by drugs,

But Reznor's version strikes something different for me. When he says "I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real." When people cut, they focus on nothing but the pain and the blood to drive stress and other problems out of their head, and let the pain in, because pain is a much simpler emotion.

  • The song is actually about the emotional turbulance trent went through after one of his good friends died

  • audible brilliance

  • the lyrics to this song are amazing

  • it is wise to inform oneself before making dumb statements. Trent Reznor is the author of the song. Johnny Cash is the one who covered the song.

  • yes, with ranch. then gobbled it down!!!!!

  • First person to call this a remake of Cash's hurt, is going to GET hurt!

  • Personally, i think that the song is about letting fame get to your head and losing everyone you once cared about/those who cared for you. And once the fame; money; drugs takes its toll, and you see that it doesn't make you truly happy, you realize what you've lost.

But of course, everyone has their own interpretations.

Truly one of the most beautiful and saddening songs out there.

  • trent wrote it about his addiction, but it is written in a way that everyone can relate in their own way, so it really shouldn't matter what people think about when they listen to it.

  • i think you're pretty much spot on

  • hahahaha!

  • The NIN version vs. Cash is growing old.

I personally like both equally. Someoen posted one being about pain amd the other one about being hurt. I kidn of agree. But both Versions are equally good.

The only disturbing one is Kermits version. :o

Purely made to poison our mind LOL

Youtube it, Kermit sings Hurt ;)

  • Say that to a Johnny Cash fan in person and you will be killed on the spot.

  • this is the only good video of hurt the live performance is only second for the reason it is live

  • your opinion man

  • So much emotion live, best single song of oxegen!

  • awesome song, NIN does great in the original!

i heard the johnny cash version first. i kind of prefer the cash version though, because he can show the same dark emotion without shouting.

  • He can show dark emotion because his voice was completely shattered. Everyone who's not a NIN fan prefers Cash's version because it's easy-listening.

  • true and that's why i like this version. however, i like cash's version because you can hear hurt in his voice. to me, one is dark and the other painful.

  • i respect NIN for composing this song and delivering a masterpiece i just felt more power with cash's version due to the emotion, R.I.P Johnny!

  • just because its the same lyrics doesnt mean that its the same song.. i mean, you couldnt really compare the two. they are both really good but in different ways. you gotta have that in mind, completely different genres. i like the both equally.

  • Heard Cash's version first, then NIN both are powerful, but I am leaning towards NIN even though I like Cash's music more.

  • Cash's version is very good, however i agree with what you say. NIN's version is powerfull which i think alot of people can relate to, more with regards to brutal emotion and the way NIN delivers the song.

  • @peterlanc1729 It's about his heroine addiction. Or at least that's part of it his inspiration- and that's why NIN's is better. It needs that last powerful chorus to really drive it home and make you hear what he's trying to say.

  • ouch

  • @MdKnToker how the fuck can u say leaning towards NIN, yeah cash did an ok job, but trent is a fuckin genius...nin has way more emotion and feeling behind it than cash's

  • amazing song, altough i prefer johnny cash's version, credit must be given to NIN for composing this song in the first place, and actually performing it very well.

  • eire??? dont you mean eerie, not ireland lmao

  • lol

  • props to NIN for writing the lyrics, but I like johhny cash's cover a lot better. Its almost as if it was written for his life, quite eire

  • Oh, and correct me if im wrong.... trent reznor was in NIN at the time of release... GUESS ITS JUST U THAT WAS WRONG.

  • Isn't saying Trent was in NIN at the time a bit redundant? Outside of live performances he's just about all there is in the "band." Thus his greatness.

  • uhm NIN is only comprised of trent

  • k were both wrong....

""Hurt" is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and Country Music Awards."

  • @dazlfc042306 it was originally written for cash to perform but he always said no so it went to NIN

  • no, nin wrote it im really damn sure.

  • well stupid ass people like you piss me off. NIN wrote the song retard.

  • @DeliveryManBoy you are a fucking retard. that is all. also, your/you're. learn the goddamn difference.

  • still better than yours ^^" and i'm not a native english speaker

  • haha nice one dude you showd him the way ;)

  • fuck off or do a better version :) the audio quality is quite good, and you know, IT'S A SONG

  • thanks for sharing :)

  • it was good till the end when it turned into one long ass screach in my ear it kinda pissed me off other then that it was great!

  • It's a one-man band.

  • lalalalalalalalala hi mother hall you are the best of all
