Remember to clip in when the carabiner is as close to your hip as possible. If you clip like this guy does, its a LOT of extra rope out that can make you hit the ground from 3rd carabiner easy. Im sure he only meant to show you the correct way of the actual clipping, but i think it should be mentioned in the same video about when to clip aswell. First carabiner can be clicked like this, not the rest. climb safe, take a course!
ALthough prity acurit i have to agree.. things like this really need to be under supervision when your learning. Its not like football where making a mistake is a missed goal.. mistakes here cost lives or broken bones.
This is ridiculous. He pulls the rope with his right hand, then when he clips, they cut to a shot where he uses his *left* hand(!), and then it cuts back to using his right again. They seem to be trying hard to confuse people!!!
Lead climbing takes a lot of advanced things that one must learn to lead safely. I personally do not feel that even illustrating the techniques online at all are appropriate. Any instruction in leading should be done in a gym, by a trained instructor. Also, climbing is a dangerous sport indoors or outside, so technically expertvillage should also have a disclaimer illustrating this. Bad ideas, Expertvillage.
That is just it, there is not a basic "thing" they are many basic "things". In addition they are not "basic". The important and basic part of lead climbing is getting proper training from an experieneced climber or professional instructor.
In this instance while the video gives accurate information and is absolutly correct, it is not the whole picture, because of this it is dangerous.
I think it is completely irresponsible to say at the start of this video that he is going to show you how to lead climb. Lead climbing is way more complicated then this, and this lttle bit of info without the rest is just dangerous.
it switches and shows a clip of him using his left hand to clip in and then switches back to him using his right hand. We SEE him demonstrate with his left, and we don't actually see him using his right. So, he may use his right hand, but the demonstration that we actually see is left.
Just a word of advice for people learning from this video. NEVER PUT YOUR FINGER THROUGH THE GATE OF THE CARABINER!! Unless you want to De-Glove your finger... meaning ripping off all the skin on that finger. If you fall while clipping, you do not want your finger to be stuck in the Biner's gate.
i suggest that anyone takes a lead climbing course, even if don;t learn much more it helps with knowing 100% what ur doing is right .
wrong clipping
back clipping is when your rope (attached to harness) is behind the clip and belayers is in front. and there fore yours can unclip itself
z cliping is when you take your belayings rope..the rope against the wall and not the one on your harness and clip that. this creates a z and when you fall it can cause oyu to go head first into the wall
the wrong way is what's called back clipping, you need to be able to clip with both hands as you won't always have the draw(quickdraw is the thing he's clipping)right in front of you, look up back clip and z clip
I dunt get it, you tookthe rope with your right, and then the close up shows your left hand doing the job, and then you said that therefore you used right yer right hand?
Doesn't matter what hand he clipped with as you will need to learn to clip with both hands. It also depends on what way the quick draw is facing and what hand you are clipping with to what style you clip with. If he used his right hand to clip he would have to use one of his fingers instead of a thumb to hold the `biner and flick the rope through.
If you practise lots it will become natural, like riding a bike :)
This is more confusing than helpful, in my opinion.

I wish he would have described what z-clipping is and how to be careful not to do it.

Terribly confusing video. Expert Village is full of non-experts! Get real instruction, don't follow these videos.

yup. Also be careful if you grab the slack with your mouth before clipping. People occasionally lose teeth...
