Very good. I'm guessing youre working from a photograph reference. I liked what you made. However, there is too much black here above here left arm that seems unnatural. It is the illustrator's job to improve upon the photo. Still... there seems to be real affection in the rendering. So... A- : )

Rendering children's faces, in any medium, can be tricky; there's a temptation to accentuate 'adult' features that just aren't there yet. I think you've done an extraordinary job on this work... the catchlights in those smiling eyes are perfect.

However, shadow and background are a little bit off; even if you copy it exactly from a photo, it won't look right in this medium... maybe some artistic license? All that aside, I love your work!

The fact that it's an artist's interpretation of a photograph does indeed make it art. Also the fact the artist is using his artistic knowledge (light, shadow, form, proportion, etc.) to make the image, which has a different quality than a photograph (a much better one in my opinion - because it shows how this artist can put his skills to work), makes it a piece of art. There is NO debate, this is widely accepted as art. If you wanted to argue if it's a masterpiece, then you have a debate ;)

I realize we are trying to get "art" but you can't use the term to justify your reasoning over mine.

I don't know how you can say at what point a photo becomes art, is it when a photo is replicated by hand using digital techniques?

What are really looking for here is photorealism using a digital program to alter hand drawn lines that are being traced using short term memory from a piece of paper he is looking at.

Why not use a real photo and get better results if you are going for realism?

I've just gotta ask... with such a use of a digital medium and using a photograph why not start with the photograph... filter it out to a 5 tone greyscale or just lines and go from there?

It doesn't seem like it would be as unique but the goal is to have a piece of art with correct dimensions and almost photorealism right?

You zoom in on the eyes to paint the eyelashes and it's still sharp as h... Ehm... In any case it's incresibly clear and the pixels don't stand out. How big are you're images in Photoshop?
