  • Jon Herrington just nails the shit out of this.

  • It's one of those bands that are just reaaally hard to hate. If anybody hears Steely Dan, they are more likely to ask "What's that great music?" rather than "What's that shit you're listening to?"

  • I have never in my life heard live music that i like better than the studio version, that being said i have been listening to some of the concerts on here and can honestly say that is no longer true. just plain awesome! no fireworks, crazy outfits, giant tounges, or jumping around like idiots.....just damn good sounding well played music, and a show that lets you concentrate on it!!!!

  • Herington is a hack and an embarassment - no one cares to hear his interpretation of the flawless original guitar parts. Total hack and not fit to fill in on short notice let alone as a featured performer.

  • @MANHATTANBEEFMAN yeah right, like you have a clue.

  • @pretorious700

    .....easily impressed....

  • Guitar solo is epic, this song should be on guitar hero!!

  • Is it true that at least part of the reason Steely Dan didnt perform live in their earlier years very much was because Donald Fagan suffered from stage fright?

  • Herrington is amazing. Perfect addition to this band.

  • fuckin great!!!

  • How good is Herro????...my hero...

  • Steely Dan a band that plays and WRITES to a beat of their own. NO band like this band ever!!!! THE BEST!!!!!!

  • Much better than the RRMHOF performance. GREAT!!

  • What real musicians out there did not spend hours trying to play on these guy's level?

    I know I did.

  • PHENOMENAL!

  • Ray Charles was a huge influence on Fagen. Check out "What I Do" - his tribute to the man on Fagen's most recent solo work "Morph The Cat". Don and Walt, I love you for creating the greatest sounds of my lifetime.

  • Got a case of dynamite!

  • Beautiful...just beautiful. One of my top five bands of all time. This series thanks to drhey19 just reignites a passion for this freakin sound. I heard these guys hundreds of times, bought albums, 8-tracks and CDs. But I love the live music the best. Many thanks drhay19!

  • @shotgunshackjack Glad you enjoy it! I'm happy to share this great music with other fans!

  • I wish i have a voice like that

  • Wow, still great after many years. This is a game changing band who also wrote a lot of the sound track to my life, and some of yours probably! One of their best songs!!

We didn't get to see them live back in the 70's, so better late than never!!

  • I love you, Donald!

  • No doubt, this is Steely Dan at their best! The guitar solo that Larry Carlton wrote for the song is one of my favorites, along with the one he wrote for "Kid Charlemagne"! And no, that's just the way Donald Fagen always sings and always has. Once thing you can bet on, these guys aren't trying to imitate anyone. They are talented enough that they don't have to. They are who they are, and they write and perform some great stuff!

  • what's with the dark glasses and head movements, Is he trying to be the jewish Ray Charles? Talented band over the years

  • Comment removed

  • I agree 100% @TWood, and the correct spelling is Larry Carlton...

  • raise your hands if you were reading dostoevsky, nietzsche or camus when this song first came out

  • Great song and watch Micheal's facial expressions and passion to sing / play to those of Ray Charles - very similar.

  • Awesome Live Version! Sounds Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

  • WHO WAS THE JACKASS WHO GAVE THIS A THUMBS DOWN?!

  • All-time under-rated Steely Dan song. Brilliant.

  • thembs up for key tar

  • One of FAVORITE songs, off one of my favorite Dan albums,"The Royal Scam", right before their masterpiece album,"Aja".Great to see/hear McDonald with them again. People tend to forget how much McDonald contributed the The Dan's music over the years, after "the original band" broke up after only two albums. They then went to a using a "key group" of session players on their albums, although, Denny Dias, who was an "original" guitarists, continued to play on a number of albums up until "Gaucho".

  • Thanks Bro.This rocks!!

  • hell ya

  • Will love these guys and their music til the day I die. might have this at my cremation. Great way to go out.

  • God...the lead guitarist just totally muffs the intro. Which would be OK if it wasn't the most totally awesome intro of all time !!!!!!!! Larry Carton has got to be fuming somewhere over this. Just do a search on YouTube on this song and you will find kids who can nail this song.

    Really sad rendition....

  • @obdami I don't feel that he muffs the intro so much as it lacks intensity and overdrive.

  • @obdami You stupid fuck. Of course any monkey can "nail" a replay of a canned recording. All of you making comments on this particular page are fucked. Jesus, go listen to yer YouTube wannabes. After that, how about some America's Funniest fucking Home Videos? Larry Carlton doesn't give a shit either.

  • @twood10566

thanks for that dude. It pisses me off to no end listening to assholes who want to hear the "studio" version at a live concert. If they want to hear that, hell stay home and send the ticket money to ME!!!

  • @obdami - Yeah - Larry Clayton's version sends shivers down my spine.

    This, not so much.

  • I like Donald Fagen doing his Ray Charles impersonation. I know, I know... bad joke.

A good friend of mine has always hated Steely Dan, and I could never figure out why. He was sitting down with a beer after work one night and a song came on the radio. He started listening to it and thought "These chords would be great in a jazz song. Oh, wait..." Took him almost 30 years to figure out SD is a jazz band with rock overtones and not the other way around.

  • @Zynx812 very debatable, the jazz band bit, but still no doubt, one of the best harmonies around, rock, jazz, blues or otherwise

  • most xlent!

  • This is one of those deep cuts on an album. Pure genious.

  • My son and I saw them do Aja last friday night.

    Awesome show!

  • there soooooo good!!!! Steely Dan forever!!!

  • the cuervo gold..the fine colombian..

    what a band

  • Sounds as good as it did the day it was released !!

  • no question... steely dan music doesnt age or get dated for some reason... always fresh... like new. the writing is impeccable, the playing superb. any major dude knows this.

  • The lead guitarist here is Jon Herrington...

An awesome band. They eclipse the Eagles

as the best American band, bar none...

  • Larry Carlton is not in this. He played the original lead on the studio version.

  • help. what guitar Carlton on? It's so cool

  • wow! a black guy is laying it down on bass, now how cooool is that?! :D

  • I saw them last week in Vegas Awesome as ever saw them do reelin in the yrs! after hearing them you have to really think todays music is really bad!

  • Saw them in Chicago last night. Fabulous. Fagen is the white Ray Charles in his look/mannerisms on stage. If you ever get the chance...go see them..you won't be disapointed.

  • This song need Larry Carlton's intro lead..

  • nah i do not think so

  • Saw them on Monday night in Birmingham (UK). They'd sold out in London (like 2-years ago). Donald was in fine voice. They were note perfect as usual. As you say Pangyeo a soundtrack to my life too.

  • yeah, i was in Birmingham too... excellent gig!

  • One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. I've seen them several times, and I've never gone home dissatisfied. On this video, I noticed Mike McDonald on keyboards. I know he's sung backup on some of their tunes.

  • The band graciously agreed to provide the soundtrack for my life.

  • @pangyeo Amen, bro. Whenever the Dan plays, I'm home.

  • Yep, fab track... just, the deums suck on this version for some reason they've mixed it in your face and they kind of suck...

  • Steely Dan Is my "gold standard" in music

  • 10-4, Ive got a copy

  • drhey19 thanks for this awesome upload, you're great! ;^)

  • ur welcome!

  • Uncle Donald and Uncle Walter, Doing what they do best. This was one of my favorite tours.

  • uncle?

  • such a cool tune.

  • Soulful!!!

  • Drew Zingg, who toured w/ them in '93 was amazing... i've heard many tracks from shows of that tour, he was a killer player, almost like a quasi-metal-post-bebopper; his solos on Bodhisattva, Black Friday and on the opening meddley weresomething else too, man!

    !

  • It don't get much better than this!

  • m speechless!!! this is fantastasic...you khnow wher i lived in the 70's it was almost impossible to access such good sounds.. n i never thought that they even performed live..always thought they were session musicians who got together for each of their albums...this is a revelation..Fagen, Becker n Macdonald are simply GREAT n together they are GREATER!!!

  • freakin super bad ass balls to the walls awesome on my grandmother's shwuzzie!

  • J. Herrington is the best for the group...

  • And he's so down to earth..he emailed me a real detailed take on composing vs pure improv on solos.

    So lyrical.

  • .. nice tone and maybe thanks due to larry fro writing the part from which Jon does not deviate much here . I like wayne Krantz with Steely .. he is true to the original spirit of the unexpected .. hell of a player too and a nice guy .

  • Just gets better with time! You rock old dude!

  • Goose bumps

  • What a great live version of one of their best songs. Awesome! Thanks for posting.

  • Nice!

  • Fantastic!!

  • Awesome! What's this from it looks professionally shot?
