I am of Russian ancestry on my mother side. , I was born far away from Russia, but deep in my heart I have Russian music in vibrato that easy my journey ..love ya , juliya
My grandmother came to this country from Moscow. She tried to teach me this song in Russian when I was in my teens. Unfortunately I had a difficult time pronouncing the words and she would gently laugh. I love to hear this great version with the soul of the Russian people.
the thing is that "russian romance" (русский романс) as music genre from the first day of its existence was strongly influenced by gypsy music. Theoretically it can be proved: In russian language the name of genre consist of the word "russian' as if there was any non-russian analog before)) No wonder that russian composer of 19 century wrote music in gypsy style. It was very popular among "high society'. But in music of authentic russian origin you will never hear three semi-tones one by one )
Neither melody nor lyrics of the song have something to do with gypsies.
The lyrics of the song were written by a Ukrainian poet and writer Yevhen Hrebinka and published in a Russian paper Literaturnaya gazeta on 17 January 1843. the mlody was composed and published as Russian Romance by a Russian composer of German origin Florian Hermann in 1884.
Most probably Shaliapin was the first who amended lyrics to claim gypsy origin of the song. he himself was not a gypsy of course...

I just wonder if there any of his song recorded or it is only videoclips, his songs don't follow his clips. But, thanks a lot, I can show my american friends real russian voice. Wherever he was born...
Contrary to a popular belief, this is not a gypsy song. this is an old Russian romance, Dark Eyes. The lyrics were written by an Ukrainian poet Evgeni Grebenka and published on January 17 1843 in a popular newspaper in Russia. In 1884 a Russian composer of German origin Florian Hermann composed the melody, Valse Hommage. Evgeni Grebenka has written many romances which later on became "gipsy" songs simply because they were popular among Russian gypsies. Thanks for posting
@johnxxx20000 They were called gypsy songs because they used some gypsy motifs. No one ever claimed they were written by gypsies. Way to make up straw men and put them down to make your point. Rolling my eyes ...
