I have ridden the G650 X-Challenge which is also a very fun bike, especially off road. At 5'10", it is rather tall for me, but it isn't impossible to deal with. However, I hate the rear suspension, which is more or less and airbag that you can pump up or let air out of, similar to that of heavy industrial vehicles such as dumb trucks. The first thing I'd replace on the bike is the rear suspension, get some Ohlins shocks on there or something.
Very maneuverable bike but too low for my taste. My boots scraped the pavement every time I tried to lean the bike for fast, sharp turns. I'm 5'7 and only tested the bike on a large parking lot, but I definitely need a taller bike so I get a better chance with the off-road. I currently own a Honda XR250 Tornado (I'm in Costa Rica) and would miss the taller seat and longer suspension travel, should I change bikes. Very nimble, light and cool bike, though.
Not at all. I'm 5'10" and I actually find the seat to be a little low for my taste. This bike is an excellent choice for a beginner or as a 2nd bike commuter because it's lightweight, nimble, ergonomic and easy on the gas with almost 60 mpg. You'll like the signal switch and suspension as they are what you're most likely familiar with as a beginner. What you'll like that isn't typical is the switchable ABS. BMW is very good about letting riders with endorsements test their bikes. Try it!

@azogue79 I'm 1m89 or 6'2'' and there is nothing rong with the seat hight, maybe you drove a lowered version!
Because the standard xCountry is 870mm: which is fairly high and good for my height.
I refuse to believe you couldn't fit on the bike.

BMW flashy but falls short of a street legal uncorked Honda XR650R.
