Went to see The Beat recently - minus Dave Wakeling of course - but Roger is still Ranking and they were bloody fab!! This was the 3rd time I've seen them and would go again tomorrow!! Fan-bloody-tastic!!
@thedaviesgang24 Ranking Roger's beat played here in Christchurch, New Zealand around three years ago. I can honestly say, without a hint of exaggeration, that it was one of the best nights of my life and I've seen heaps of bands.
I loved this song. I sat through bad videos on MTV just to see this one. Dave Wakeling has an amazing voice. When I think of early 80's music, this is what I think of.
The 80s featured some of the worst music in human history...ego driven schlock. But, here and there, some bands were making some good noise....like The English Beat.
@jmeredith44 too right but only if you stayed tuned to Fab FM ( during the day at least) and especia;lly now, if people judge 80's music by the bilge that commercial local radio plays that is so sad. I mean, Chain reaction, FFS!!
I'm so pissed that I missed them! They were playing in Hermosa the other day and I found out after the fact. I heard that the blonde guy and another band member lives in Hermosa....does anyone know? If I were a teenager, I would have stalked them down, haha! I used to LOVE THEM!
i'm glad so many other people have good memories associated with this song. its so good, i literally teared up. seriously one of the greatest songs of all time.
I used to go to the roughest night club in town (Ma Peels Dewsbury, West Yorks) and this tune used to play, whilst there was fights 'en mass' between the locals and the gypsies. Thanks for posting a great tune!
My channel's full of The Specials' music, and I know I'll continue to add more & more of it.Yet at the time, I was listening to the Beat! I still have all my albums but it's the 1st time I see this video & I ADORE it!
I like the 50s French touch in it: with J. Greco's album & F. Sagan's book ''Aimez-vous Brahms?''
On my albums the band's name is The Beat, just like it was on Sting's t-shirt when he was in The Police. And I'm from Montréal btw, so why do you all call them the English Beat?
@culwin I always knew that, even if I doubt anyone here ever heard of that obscure other Beat. As I said, I live in Montreal, that's in America too, even if not in the US. The Beat from UK is only known as the English Beat in the US & nowhere else, cos they were threatened by Columbia with a lawsuit if they didn't change their name...but ONLY in the US. Otherwise, they could keep their real name everywhere else.
Wiki:''The Brit ska group of the same name were first to establish themselves as "The Beat" in Europe, prompting a voluntary decision for the US group to be billed as "Paul Collins' Beat" in Europe. In the US, Collins' "The Beat" was first to release an album in turn forcing the British group to use the name "The English Beat" in the US''..The US Beat kept the name 'P Cs Beat' for good after the success of the UK Beat.
We should call by their REAL name this BRILLIANT ska band!
Great times ... the clothes, dancing, friends, good music and cute BOYS. Agreed, it was a great time to be a teenager! BTW, I saw these guys live in boring old Sacramento, California, and we (incl. the band, just a few feet away) had a rocking time!
.41 ranking roger has gloves on, .53 he doesn't : )

Dude at 0:56 is reading Capital. I can't tell which Volume. It looks like he has all three there. Volume 1's full title is Capital: A Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. That might be the Progress Publisher's edition.
Unless he read it at least 25 times before, he won't assimilate its analysis in a beat club while listening to music.
This is what kids miss today...Youre own sub Culture to belong to. Now eveything is homogenised. No individuality.Even so called 'Goths' buy style off the peg.In late 70s early 80s you had so many youth cultures.Im glad those times were my formative years.I dont think well ever see such an explosion of diverse styles again....sadly! :(
@stevobath It was the same then as it is now. To be cool you had to wear the right shoes and the right jeans. Brand Name was where it was at. Of course you could be a pot freak or a geek or an dweeb and be cast out. Those were your "sub-cultures".
Extracting anything from the video or the band name, the term "beat" was recycled here from the late 50's. The video was an homage back two and a half decades to the beat movement. The 80's weren't beat.
@toolkien But there were more recocgnised cultures. Im afraid Ill have to dis agree. Also Im talking from my own experience in UK NOT USA.Oh. Who said the 80s were 'beat' whatever that means? To me its the name of a band in the context of this video/response!
Max, you hav'nt missed anything.....take a few 3d design classes at your local C C or art school excentricity is alive and well there...and still a lot of fun!!
@Sue71 Yeah, for my part, MTV ALWAYS pretty much sucked ( in an over-all sense anyway ), .. even way back THEN. Sure, it may've been better than it is today, .. . but THAT ain't saying a whole hell of alot !
I met them briefly before a concert in Chapel Hill, NC back in spring of '82. Best band I've ever seen live. They were opening for REM. I left the concert when REM came on, went home.
@merchantsofmilton These were some great times. I remember the clothes, dancing, friends, and the cute girls. I am so glad I was a teen in this decade of music.
Reminds me of a good friend who died in 1982 while we were in high school. Although we were rivet-heads, he really liked this song when MTV played the video (back when MTV was what it was meant to be). Still makes me wanna cry when I hear it.
80s-bad clothes but great music like english beat, the beatles , acdc, the doors, led lepplin, rolling stones, queen etc ...and im only 10!!!! lol anyways first time i listened to the band loved it!!!
That's funny; I was around for all the fun in the 80's (and 70's too), and I always say if they ever invent a time machine, drop me back off in 81. My younger friends can't believe it was better back then than now, and think I'm making up the stories I tell them about the 'old days'...
I was 15 years old when they released this song. Seeing the video, it strikes me what a fantastic song it is. It's got a simplicity to it but depth as well.
What an amazing song, can't believe I'm 35 and only heard it for the first time last week (thanks Triple R Melbourne!) Don't know how many times I listened to it since then though - let's just say a lot... =)
This was about fifteen minutes away from all of these admirable-looking models and actors disappearing, with the gas station grease monkeys and the bus station bums taking over the music and MTV.
One of the best Beat songs ever!!! I've had the pleasure of knowing Dave for about 15 yrs now, and I never get tired of any of his music when I see him perform!!!

@Maxmulham me too, I was in high school in the early '80's and this was a have, but I've actually grown to love it even more than I did then, testament to great tune, that hold up 30 years later
@kikomiko1 To be honest, I did see that movie and I thought it sucked. Even though I was born in '91, I do remember when skiiers typically wore bright vibrant colourful outfits which the movie captured notably. Otherwise I wouldn't really recommend it. With that said, I hate these revived programs on contemporary TV (such as the new Hawaii Five-O series, The new A-Team movie). They just had to modernize the crap out of it and remove everything sentimental about it. Pity really.
What the hell happened to ska?! I'm bringing it back! I just bought myself a hat (that's right a hat not a fn baseball cap). Now if I can only find some black & white checkered clothing....
This has to be in the top 5 all time great 80's songs. The English Beat was with me all throughout my high school years (1983-87) and this song reminds me of those great parties where they played this type of music.
This is a nice song, but i kinda love the video mainly because of how the black guy danced in with the tambourine and how he dances while playing it..
It looks like the guy is reading Albert Camus' "The Fall" which is basically the story of how nations are falling at the hands of Zionist Communist Nazi Israel central bankers who wage wars on citizens form the inside. Inside traitors is what they really are.
What's the guy with the book reading? The Communist Manefesto?
The Communist Manefesto is the blueprint for Zionist Israeli bankers to takeover all nations from within by using central banks as their Trojan Horse.
My Happy song!! :)

One of the best things about the 80's is that there was more music types to choose from than you could shake a stick at. Most with original sounds.
Was it all good? Never is.
But with all those choices there was a damn site more goodness than these past 20+ years worth.
Case in point.
The Beat.
And I don't know who that other Beat is. But I can guarantee that they sucked compared to This BEAT.

This has to be in the top 5 all time great 80's songs. The English Beat was with me all throughout my high school years (1983-87) and this song reminds me of those great parties where they played this type of music.

I love this song, and the video. It is typical of videos from the early 80s. I really miss those days.

@ftsjr Typical? I feel this is better than 99.9% of the early 80s videos (and even some nowadays). Some of them were so bad!

It looks like the guy is reading Albert Camus' "The Fall" which is basically the story of how nations are falling at the hands of Zionist Communist Nazi Israel central bankers who wage wars on citizens form the inside. Inside traitors is what they really are.
MostMagnificentOne 9 months ago
@MostMagnificentOne He's reading "The Capital". NOT "The Communist Manifesto".
JJBsCinema 9 months ago
What's the guy with the book reading? The Communist Manefesto?
The Communist Manefesto is the blueprint for Zionist Israeli bankers to takeover all nations from within by using central banks as their Trojan Horse.
That's why we all suffer.
MostMagnificentOne 9 months ago
@MostMagnificentOne
This is my first post.
The titile of the book is significant to this great song: Aimez-vous Brahms.
The plot concerns a middle-aged woman who leaves her long-standing lover for a relationship with a younger man.
Capital is the other book. Thanks.
