  • I like Pav , but I feel he rolls through this aria as if he is warming up, as appose to giving the nuance and interpretation that the aria deserves. He also is singing the aria a little fast. His quality of voice sounds beautiful and he is in great vocal condition.

  • Grandissimo Luciano, grandissimo!!!

  • THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is an early 1980s Pavarotti version on YouTube which is even better. However, I think that if Pavarotti's 1980s version is the Gold Standard then Jussi Bjorling's and del Monaco's renditions are pure platinum. The Great Pavarotti will be remembered as someone who was not only a wonderful performer but also a great ambassidor and someone who spread the appeal of opera in a way that had been lost since the 78 gramphone days before television. God bless you my boy.

  • I think we could all do with folks concentrating their comments on the music and performance Siriusfanatiker. I prefer Bjorling in this , but my affection for Pavarotti remains undiminished. What i do sense is that this is a role he never performed on stage- so the interpretation lacks a bit of depth, but the voice is splendid.

  • insomma....eri per altre cose Luciano!!!

  • He's sexy.

  • pure pavarotti pap!

  • a me sembra un po' buttata li..

  • The Bocellisation of opera. Booooooo!

  • please ladies and gentelmen, pavarotti was very nice, but MARIO DEL MONACO is the best singer in this and every aria he sang.

  • @dayanvolpe in your opinion.

  • If you want to speak about finances, economic transactions and business of course you speak in Chinese,If you want to speak about love you speak in French. If one would have to speak to the dog's.One must speak either in German or English. If you want to speak to GOD: YOU MUST SPEAK IN SPANISH.............and if you want to sing.you must sing in Italian.....Long live pasta lover Luciano Pavarotti.....amen

  • bahhhhh

  • Is it me, or is this version somewhat uninspired? What's with Pavarotti? and, with this gorgeous music. Just going through the motions it seems. He looked more alive when taking the applause.

  • @stefan103 I would say that he didn't warm up his voice, he has a little wabble in those high Bb. Probably that's a concerning for him. Besides, it's a small aria and I don't hblame him for not having time.

  • ????? Have you heard that second high Bb??? Can you name any other tenor today able to sing a si bemole comparable to that?? I'm amazed that anyone can complain!!!

  • @panchupin Dude, read my comment and tell me at what word I complained about that. It's just an observation. I'm really a fan of Pavarotti, but if you ask my about any outstanding si bemol, I would always recommend some of Pavarotti's, but I would include Giacomini's, Corelli's and some vibrating sounds from Martinucci.

  • BEAUTIFUL ! Simply beautiful !

  • what means 'che ella mi creda'?, thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • @italomelomane em... "Que ella me cree'

  • @mauriciomille "Que ella me cree" libre y lejos

  • @mauriciomille oOops ok, gracas

  • @italomelomane em... 'Ella es mi creencia', she is my creedence or 'ella es mi credo'

  • @mauriciomille "Ch'ella mi creda..." means "Let her think of me...(doing something)"

  • Hi, nobody seems to give you the right answer... ''Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano'', would better (freely but to make sense) translate like ''Let her believe I'm free and far away'', because he is asking for a last wish, that is for her to believe that he is not dead, but far away living a new life, so he wants the others to tell her or make her believe that...

  • @mauriciomille "I hope she believe me"

  • hi was a piece of god

  • Just a suggestion: listen to Jussi Biorling's version.

  • all nasal and teethy sounds

  • @mactopolis I was listening and enjoying until I read your comment.

  • One of the best beautiful arias of all time.

  • Sublime!

  • Wonderful voice of High-C

This is the most clearness voice that I've heard.

What name of CD Album include in?

  • Bravo!

  • why all this bickering about who is best this tenor or that tenor? lets all just be grateful that we were priveleged to have them . luciano was a wonderful singer . rest in peace maestro

  • słabo

  • God may this beautiful voice Rest in Peace <3 <3<3 Thank you for the upload!!!

  • Really, what a glorious voice. This aria may not have showcased his voice the best the way Nessun Dorma or E Lucevan Le Stelle, but boy, what a voice to begin with!

  • If anyone listen the version of Franco Corelli in his Tokyo Concert 1971 or Jussi Bjorling, all of you will be flabbergasted..

  • Yes, I have the Bjorling recording. For me, it remains the standard by which all other recordings of this work should be measured.

  • this is not "mediocre"..this is Pavarotti..the king of singing technique..doesn't need no spirit to complete.. just to open the mouth

  • @MarcuCezar the warm rays of the sun flows forth from his lips to brighten even the darkest of nights and the gloomiest of days. goodbye Luciano. you are deeply missed :'(

  • totally agree. corelli was a god.

  • What a shame Ricordi didn't allow Caruso to record this beautiful aria. He thought that it would affect somehow the sales of vocal scores.

We have to find ourselves happy with Domingo, Pav, Lanza, etc. renditions.

  • Lanza and Potts are both turds.

  • Lanza us not bad at all.

    Potts is a troll.

  • Lanza a turd?

    Your mama!

  • Who is Potts?

  • Minus thumbs?! This is a fact, dumbasses. I'm really getting enough of YouTube's Pav-cult. And I didn't even say Pav's bad or less good!

  • Voiceteacher, you sing! Too much talk...

  • I agree!

  • very uncomfortable for him to sing this. This sits a little too low for him

  • Grande, grande, grande!!!

  • wanderfoul !

  • bravo

  • At 1:33, the cello player to Pavarotti's right is so amazed with the high note that he has to look up.

  • He might be amazed, but he's waiting for Pav to finish the note and continue with the melody on the cello.

  • @leadoffeohippus Lol the Cello player is looking up to see when to continue the accompaniment.

  • Have you seen the Franco Corelli concert in Tookyo 1971 when he sung Un di all azzurro spazio, Che gelida manina or Ch' ella mi creda? So, see, listen and then tell me something...

  • There is always this insecurity in his eyes which is charming, because his voice pours out with such iron security, but then he has these scared puppy-dog eyes.

  • And have you ever asked yourself why the masses like Pavarotti, an artist who represents non-massive type of music ? As I can remember only two more operatic artist achieved this kind of massive approvement - Caruso and probably Callas. And do not forget that Pavarotti has been around for several decades, he is not Ricky Martin kind og instant star. Instant star are commercial products that come and go,just like fashion, but Pavarotti-like-stars define what is commercial and what is fashionable.

  • No matter how strong your argument, no matter how much technical knowledge you have about singing, it fall upon narrow, deaf ears. All of this being said, I like Pavarotti. Not, though, at the expense of other singers or objective analysis of his singing. Alright, I'm out of here.

  • Corelli, del Monaco, Lanza, Bjorling, Giacomini, etc. could stand next to Pavarotti, sing the same aria and leave him looking pedestrian singing this rep. These dramatic arias that are unflinchingly approved of by his mass of rabid fans are things that he would admit he never would have been allowed to sing in public without his previous commercial success. Congratulations to anyone who gets up the courage to say anything negative about Pavarotti on these vids, but take it from me, just stop.

  • I am ignorant so I will quote people who are not ignorant on Pavarotti. Mutti : ''The point of reference, like Callas or Tebaldi'', Ricciarelli : ''Karajan among tenors'', Scotto : ''He was, is and will be number one'', Zefirelli : ''There were tenors and there was Pavarotti'', Alagna : ''He was the Messiah of tenors'', Florez : ''The most beautifull voice of the 20th century'', Milnes : ''There was no greater singer in the world of opera'', Bumbry : ''The truest of all tenor sounds'' ...

  • I am not suggesting that Pavarotti is the greatest tenor of all time, not because he is not,but because that question can't be answered, there are too many different elements that make one to be a great tenor, these elements are very different, they are not necessarily strictly artistic. And it is impossible to determine ultimately which element is more important then some other element. But to call Pavarotti ''a pedestrian singer''in any aria is primarily subjective and secondary ignorant thesis.

  • In other words, Pavarotti is original accepted by the masses, and that is his advantage, not disadvantage among other opera artists. He is comparable to Caruso, Callas, Sinatra, Presley, Einstein and that is his value but snobbby people just can't understand this.

  • I can't even watch these videos anymore. The discourse below is just idiotic and ricidulous, claiming ridiculous things about Pavarotti. Better than Caruso? Are you kidding me? Caruso's voice was the voice that shaped this century's tenor singing. His technical approach was completely unique in its time, as was the quality of voice and interpretation. No tenor who came in the generation after and heard him would say they trounced him. Neither would any audience member.

  • Pavarotti is not a god of opera..he was VERY GOOD but the has in front of him all the names i said! Probably you say that Pavarotti is the best 'cause you never listen the tenors that i said before..those names,in MY OPINION, are bigger and greater than Pavarotti, perhaps not in career longevity, but they are truly among the greatest tenors and i put Pavarotti in 8º spot!

  • and without their natural lit beauty...I don't know why everybody think that Pavarotti is the best of all time..let me just tell you: he IS NOT "The Legend" Enrico Caruso, he IS NOT "The Prince of Tenors" Franco Corelli, he IS NOT the "Brass Bull of Milan" Mario del Monaco, he IS NOT the "People's Tenor" Beniamino Gigli, he IS NOT the "Swedish Caruso" Jussi Bjorling, he IS NOT "The Force of Nature" Mario Lanza, AND he IS NOT "The Golden Voice" Giuseppe di Stéfano!

  • Lol.."i'm not expert in opera",you think? you're just a fucking bitch!! Go LISTEN the version of FRANCO CORELLI to see the diference! I said that Pavarotti had a brilliant and beautiful voice and he is one of the most important in history, that's a fact, BUT his interpretation and phrasing is weak in many arias like "Una furtiva lagrima" or mostly "O sole mio"", because in those canzones or arias you have to be expressive and sing beautifully and Pavarotti makes it seem banal

  • very beautiful, and his smile is so beautiful and nice and good, he was such a dear man.

  • You waste your time with your bullshit words about the most good and amazing tenor in the world, that the God blessed us-luciano pavarotti. i'm not expert in opera but i can see you are just a troll.

  • I agree, caruso is good too, very emotional voice, but luciano pavarotti is my love.

  • You're just stupid? YOU SAID that Caruso's voice "ate Pavarotti's timbre..Pavarotti had got expression too (NOT AS GOOD AS CARUSO)", and that makes pavarotti better than Caruso? That's contradictory, doesn't make any sense and you must be completly fucking crazy!! And how can you say that Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, Giuseppe di Stéfano, Jussi Bjorling or Mario Lanza are "bullshit"? Go listen more operas, more arias and canzones napolitanas..and PLEASE go to the psychiatrist!

  • Comment removed

  • all right Giacomo He wasn't the greatest ever..The discussion over here, under Ch'ella mi creda is pointless,it's obvious that Corelli, Giacomini or Del Monaco were better in dramatic roles.Pava was true master of liric repertoire till late 70's and I don't think anybody who posesses some knowledge of opera considers Nessun Dorma as His greatest aria at all..for the same reasons as Ch'ella mi creda.

  • If you haven't already listen to it, I would recomend you two Pavarotti's album : 1. ''Luciano Pavarotti, Arias by Verdi and Donizetti, conducted by Edward Downes'', after listening to this album you can realize that tenor with such a voice can not be called ''pedestrian singer'' no matter what he sings and no matter who you compare him with 2. ''Luciano Pavarotti,Verismo arias'', where he performed this aria in his prime, and maybe he is not the best but he is still not a ''pedestrian singer''.

  • Castrop, in case of adressing Your last post to me, Ive never claimed Pava to be pederastian. Hes my favourite modern tenor and I adore his singing. Of course Ive heard those albums. The point is that its normal Pava havent created masterpieces in all roles He performed. It is NORMAL, nobody can do it. I adore him as Manrico, Chenier or Calaf but the way Giacomini, Corelli or Del Monaco performed those roles suits to them better. By the way, Pava is my favourite Manrico though.

  • this is the right sense of my statement. And somebody who is calling Him pederastian must be really mad of course. I think Pava was the greatest Rodolfo in history for example, but in some dramatic roles- questionable. But that doesn't make Pava worse tenor than somebody else. I think Ch'ella mi creda wasn't among Pava repertoire so talking in this place who was better in this - Corelli or Pava..without sense I think.

  • I'm sorry because I probably misunderstood you. Essentialy I agree with you.

  • And I'm sorry I even said what I did. I just get so flustered when I see people who blindly support him as the greatest ever without examining the entire context of tenoral performance...he truly was an incredible, absolutely phenomenal lyric tenor, certainly amongst the foremost of that fach. I love his Donizetti singing particularly...I just think it was unfortunate that heavier roles robbed us of the lyric beauty in his voice prematurely. I have a grudge against those performances, Im sorr

  • OOOOH!!!! Beautiful!!!!

  • hey man. im naked!!

anyone here like rage against the machine!?!?! gP

  • Giacomini's and Corelli's versions are the best for me.. But this one isn't poor, Pavarotti's voice timbre is just to light I think. It's still very good. unfortunately I haven't heard Tucker's one..

  • if you go into i tunes, ed rosen has a great pod cast of tucker doing fanciulla. it is absolutely unreal. see if you can find it and or download it.

  • Corelli's version is by far the best, in my opinion. However, Pavarotti's version is also good, in his own style.

  • Hear Corelli this is poor

  • Corelli's version of this is over stylized, meaning continual scooping and too much fake sentiment(much like R. Fleming), although I adore his voice. Pav. is a real singer's singer!

  • Corelli's trying way too hard. I like Giacomini's version, but Corelli's isn't even close. (also someone mentioned Domingo? hahaha)

  • Alright job, but the ultimate interpreter of the Dick Johnson role was Richard Tucker, the great tenor this Gala is named after.

  • Sounds good ...but Giagomini rocks this aria!!!

  • Yes, I agree that the maestro is rushing through some of the phrasing, and maybe seems to be "going through the motions" a bit...but someone please tell me why his voice just thrills me like no other tenor!!! Perhaps it is because Pavarotti was my introduction to the opera world - my "first love" if you will. As a musician, I can appreciate why the opera aficionados prefer other voices for their power, depth, etc...but I just can't stop loving this voice!

  • Placido Domingos and Corellis rendition of this song were far more powerful. Pavarottis version is softer but also great

  • How dare you say such a stupidity here? Domingo's version sounds pushed, besides of being transposed way down as he usually does. Please don't put Domingo close Pavarotti, he [Domingo] is a shame for universal opera.

  • Corelli was better in this.but Domingo?don't make me sick,he was pushed and throaty joke comparing to such a tenors as Corelli or Pavarotti

  • Just the sound of his voice, the tone and quality and you are so perfectly correct the pure joy in his voice, well that is what I love about him and always will.

  • This is not my favorite rendition of this beloved (by me, at least) piece--I prefer Bjorling's over any other-- BUT, there is something about the joy that emanates from Pavarotti while he sings *anything* that tugs at my heart.....I miss that sense of joy in many other's who may this piece better, you know? That glorious smile........memento mori, Luciano.....

  • Pavarotti was the gratest bel canto tenor ever. He had an ideal voice for the Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini.

  • Agree with bellatrix. It's bloodless.

  • NON CI SONO PAROLE...

  • Luciano was one of the very best tenors of history, however he was not a dramatic one,

because the colors of his voice were liric.

Therefore , this aria is not for him, niether

vesti la giubba, nor dio mi potevi.

    Perfect tecnik, but emotionless.

  • Purchase his album, Amore: Romantic Italian Songs. Listen to this song on that album and you will disagree with what you've just said. He sings it beautifully on that album. I agree with you on this performance though. He rushes it I think, especially at the beginning they should have slowed down like the album.

  • I will, Thank you.

What do you think of Corelli, Del Monaco and Giacomini´s Interpretations on this aria?

  • I've just watched Del Monaco's performance on youtube and it is certainly the best all round performance I've seen, arguably the 2nd or 3rd best I've heard, although he rushes the beginning a little; but for me the master of this song(as far as I'm aware) is Giacomini.

  • His (stefan103) version on here is amazing, especially when his first says 'tanto bene' that is really beautiful. I don't know if it's pure emotion or he meant to do it, but it is heart shatteringly beautiful. It pulls my whole body down and the tears well up everytime. Corelli's I would say is the most clear, but not my favourite. But having said that anyone who can sing the ending from, 'che m'hai voluto tanto bene' brilliantly has sung a version that I'll love.

  • I agree, Giacomini´s voice is more baritonal and velvet-type, specialy in the low notes. It seems to me he leans his voice more on the chest. However, I am well aware it is a comparation of two giants....let us enjoy them both!!

  • hey i got that cd amor and this song on the cd just holds me, he sings it sooooo well.

  • but his lower tunes were rich, deep and perfect...

  • giacomini is trash compared to this instrument!!!!! by far!!!

  • Superb....almost as good as Giacomini! Bravo!

  • mir geht ja soooo das herz auf

  • Yuk! This can't be one of his best arias. Pretty dry stuff. Passionless.

  • I agree. I expected better. Pavarotti's a great tenor but since this was just a concert versus an actual opera, he wasn't under any obligation to perform this aria with the emotion required in an opera.

I'd much prefer that he performed this aria as if love was really and truly about to be taken from him and he makes one last plea for love.

  • Exelente, pero nadie como Giacomini o Corelli

  • Awful Very choppy. Without any feeling at all.

  • This man was truly "one of a kind" and will never be replaced. Thank you, Luciano, for all you meant to the world. We miss you so much. Rest in peace.
