  • I think that breakfront would be grounds for electrical fire back then!

  • FREEZE!!

  • That "Breakfront" would be $4400 today!

  • Back when they merchandise was nice.

  • It is clips like this that make me wish Mr. Gameshow was still around, RIP Bill Cullen. Seriously, how could you not like the guy????

  • wow! 72000 must have been like 8-10 years salary back then !

  • VIGRAN? helps like a spark plug?

  • that looks like a safe place to sleep during an earthquake... = p

  • how impersonal and military like, to have the contestants last names posted. i wonder who made that decision? it seems strange, in todays world of fast and easy familiarity.

  • who could have imagined what the price is right would evolve to,or devolve to, depending on your point of view.

  • That Oriental-inspired breakfront looks awfully familiar... Right, Adam?

I believe Bill's reference to Hugh Downs was alluding to the time Downs hosted "The Tonight Show" when regular host Jack Paar walked off the set *while it was airing live* when he found out the term "water closet" had been censored.

  • That's what I was thinking, Drew Carey does indeed looks like Bill Cullen in those days, especially now that he has lost all of that weight... I used to watch this as a kiddo, way before the days of Bob Barker...

  • Put a pair of similar glasses on Matt Damon...he'd be a dead ringer for Bill Cullen.

  • Notice the thing in the lower right corner gives me an indication that this version are still available and have not been deleted. I hope so ? ? ? ?

  • oops.lol stumbled on this video by mistake.still not as bad as the kermit incident but still wow forgetting the contestants lol.Bill was funny and great.

  • I can't keep up with modern technology. A Hi-Fi, a 13" speaker, a radio and a submersible coffee percolator!

  • Bill Cullen was awesome! He could screw something up and just roll right on with it and laugh about it. What a great personality he was. He always seemed friendly and warm with the contestants and audience.

  • There was a Flintstones episode where they went on the Price Is Right (on the cartoon it was called "The Prize's Price") and they had a stone age Bill Cullen as host. Fred Flintstones won a boat. That cartoon must have been from around 1960 or 61.

  • Almost looks like Drew Carey in B&W

  • @JaguarRonin I agree

  • Wow, a brain fart on live TV.

  • It's great to see those clips of the original "Price is Right".

  • im wondering why it went off air for 7 years!!!! haha WOW seemd things wer going well.

  • :50 is that Drew Carey???

  • @LHZZ12MM nope. that's bill cullen, the original host from the 50's. does look like a skinny drew carey though with the flat top and hornrim glasses.

  • Don Pardo, thanks very much!!!!!!!

  • wow i wasent even born yet

    1964

  • @mslola3618

same here...not until late 1964...my older sister was in 3rd grade then...she's 50-something now

  • I was wondering why he hadn't introduced the constestants, or why it took him so long to do that.

  • A hi-fi set? Woo-hoo!

  • they had 12 inch subs back than? =o

  • The Hugh Downs comment was a reference to Jack Paar walking off the Tonight Show..

  • Lol, I have to agree with the person who remarked how much Bill Cullen looked like Drew Carey.

  • Yeah. Bill Cullen was from the 1950s, but then Drew Carey certainly had a retro-1950s appearance while he still had the short hair and "Drew Carey style" glasses.

  • did i heard right, did he said 72,000 dollars total winnings? wow! back in those days it was alot-even now its a tidy sum. lol

  • A Hi-Fi---VERY CLASSY STUFF!!!! LOL!!!

  • A sideboard with a pull-out bed. Freaky.

  • wow thats old.

  • I wander how much the prize cost, also they dressed much better in those days

  • Few game shows now have returning champions. "Jeopardy" and "The Money List" are the only to I know of.

  • family feud

  • I don't watch that one.

  • "Oh, and it even has a bed. Now that is a COMPLETE entertainment system." lol

  • I see some similiarities btwn cullen and carey.

  • I do to but I think Bill is a better game show host! I like his personality!

  • its not bill its bob barker XD

  • man prizes these days don't get so in depth took them like 2 minuets to explain it

  • the announcer sounds like the same guy that does Saturday Night Live on NBC

  • It is. His name is Don Pardo, he's 90 years old, and he's been with NBC since 1944.

  • he also did the original Art Fleming Jeopardy!

  • this must be the abc version of tpir.

  • No, NBC. They didn't jump ship until September.

  • The ABC version also had a revamped set and logo as well. The TPIR logo had the words vertically placed on a single "price tag" and a futuristic contestant panel desk that looked like a leftover from a "Flash Gordon" episode. Too bad ABC couldn't afford to broadcast in color; the red, white, blue and gold trimmed set at the Ritz Theatre was really something to see.

  • @robcas123 This is the nbc version of tpir.

  • Wow!! I always thought Bob Barker Was the host!!

  • Me too! But he actually didn't come on the show until like the 70s or something. so weird o.O

  • Winning $72,769 in 1963 must have been a ton of stuff. :)

  • Bill Cullen kind of looks like Drew Carey.

  • yeah. do you think this is a sign? maybe next we will get someone who look like Bob Barker.

  • @21Vids Back from the Future ... lmao

  • @21Vids No, I think you mean Drew Carey kind of looks like Bill Cullen ;)

  • I like Bill... he has a great sense of humor!

  • i was born 20 years later!!!!!!!

  • TPIR has come full circle (other than tnat it's still Hollywood and not its original home in New York City). Like the late Bill Cullen, Drew Carey wears glasses, wears a crew cut, is a great quipper, has fun with contestants and crew and great class and humility (no Hollywood Barker ego here). Both gentlemen were from great working-class cities of true Americana: Bill Cullen was from Pittsburgh and Drew Carey is originally from Cleveland; those values are evident in both.

  • While some will compare Drew Carey to Bob Barker as host of The Price Is Right, one note should be mentioned about Drew Carey to Bill Cullen. Drew as had predecessors as the host of The Price Is Right so he can avoid the mistakes of the past. As the 1st regular TV host of The Price Is Right, Bill was the originator of the host role with no advantage of avoiding someone elses mistakes other than his own.

  • Darn. I wanted to see the price of that neat-o bed/FOUR speed record player/radio/coffee pot.

  • U know drew carey looks like bill cullen...if look

  • I never really realized, until you mentioned it.

  • I was 3 days old. Too wierd.

  • i was 4 1/2 months old

  • I was not even a sperm cell yet! xD

  • I wasn't even born then!

  • I was a fetus.

  • I just love Cullen's TPIR. I miss it dearly on GSN.

  • my dad was on the show in november 1962 when bill cullen was mc. he was the big winner and used the one dollar over highest bid to win ! won lots of things ~ i keep searching for that show----if you have any shows that aired 11/1962 around thanksgiving---please post/ thanks !

  • This clip demonstrates why Cullen was the best. Completely unflappable, can laugh at him himself, always breezy and fun with the contestants while being able to move the game along. But why anyone would want a bed in their dining room hutch is beyond me!

  • But, who won that fabulous "unusual breakfront" with the built in high fidelity record player, clock radio, coffee maker and pull out bed?? That's what I want to know! And where can I get one?

  • MAN I could use one of those sets!

  • looks like a skinnier Drew Carey

  • That's interesting because several reviewers have said that Drew Carey looks like an overweight Bill Cullen!

  • It can go either way, lol!

  • @madpoetzsociety Drew Carey SUCKS!

  • I cannot believe this originally aired close to 45 years ago. The champion won $72,000+ in merchandise!? That's almost $500,000 in today's money!

  • it has to be way more than that in today's money

  • Actually by show's end, the returning champion had won more, bringing her tital to just over $76,000.

  • Holy hell, that show is real old, never knew

  • that's a strange wall unit.... it has a record player, a bed, and it's also a dining room wall unit. where the hell would u put it?! it's just a totally bizarre combo.

  • One room studio apartments! :)

  • The original run of "THE PRICE IS RIGHT" featuring Bill Cullen, day and night, was on NBC from 1956 through 1963; then, both daytime and evening editions went to ABC, which lasted until 1965 {at least the daytime show did in its final season}...

  • damn, this show's been on that long?

  • That's Bill Cullen, the original host of "The Price Is Right," and regarded by virtually all his peers as the best.

  • I find it interesting that this guy looks like Drew Carey, only thinner.

  • You know, you're absolutely right. I can definitely see a resemblence.
