how impersonal and military like, to have the contestants last names posted. i wonder who made that decision? it seems strange, in todays world of fast and easy familiarity.
That Oriental-inspired breakfront looks awfully familiar... Right, Adam?
I believe Bill's reference to Hugh Downs was alluding to the time Downs hosted "The Tonight Show" when regular host Jack Paar walked off the set *while it was airing live* when he found out the term "water closet" had been censored.
That's what I was thinking, Drew Carey does indeed looks like Bill Cullen in those days, especially now that he has lost all of that weight... I used to watch this as a kiddo, way before the days of Bob Barker...
oops.lol stumbled on this video by mistake.still not as bad as the kermit incident but still wow forgetting the contestants lol.Bill was funny and great.
Bill Cullen was awesome! He could screw something up and just roll right on with it and laugh about it. What a great personality he was. He always seemed friendly and warm with the contestants and audience.
There was a Flintstones episode where they went on the Price Is Right (on the cartoon it was called "The Prize's Price") and they had a stone age Bill Cullen as host. Fred Flintstones won a boat. That cartoon must have been from around 1960 or 61.
Yeah. Bill Cullen was from the 1950s, but then Drew Carey certainly had a retro-1950s appearance while he still had the short hair and "Drew Carey style" glasses.
The ABC version also had a revamped set and logo as well. The TPIR logo had the words vertically placed on a single "price tag" and a futuristic contestant panel desk that looked like a leftover from a "Flash Gordon" episode. Too bad ABC couldn't afford to broadcast in color; the red, white, blue and gold trimmed set at the Ritz Theatre was really something to see.
TPIR has come full circle (other than tnat it's still Hollywood and not its original home in New York City). Like the late Bill Cullen, Drew Carey wears glasses, wears a crew cut, is a great quipper, has fun with contestants and crew and great class and humility (no Hollywood Barker ego here). Both gentlemen were from great working-class cities of true Americana: Bill Cullen was from Pittsburgh and Drew Carey is originally from Cleveland; those values are evident in both.
While some will compare Drew Carey to Bob Barker as host of The Price Is Right, one note should be mentioned about Drew Carey to Bill Cullen. Drew as had predecessors as the host of The Price Is Right so he can avoid the mistakes of the past. As the 1st regular TV host of The Price Is Right, Bill was the originator of the host role with no advantage of avoiding someone elses mistakes other than his own.
my dad was on the show in november 1962 when bill cullen was mc. he was the big winner and used the one dollar over highest bid to win ! won lots of things ~ i keep searching for that show----if you have any shows that aired 11/1962 around thanksgiving---please post/ thanks !
This clip demonstrates why Cullen was the best. Completely unflappable, can laugh at him himself, always breezy and fun with the contestants while being able to move the game along. But why anyone would want a bed in their dining room hutch is beyond me!
But, who won that fabulous "unusual breakfront" with the built in high fidelity record player, clock radio, coffee maker and pull out bed?? That's what I want to know! And where can I get one?
that's a strange wall unit.... it has a record player, a bed, and it's also a dining room wall unit. where the hell would u put it?! it's just a totally bizarre combo.
The original run of "THE PRICE IS RIGHT" featuring Bill Cullen, day and night, was on NBC from 1956 through 1963; then, both daytime and evening editions went to ABC, which lasted until 1965 {at least the daytime show did in its final season}...
