@GetPaid2Click hahaha that's true. MJ talks about that in a vid somewhere on yt... he reveals some secrets that he would use when he had an angle hidden from the refs
@rykerh228 Haha, yea, I saw that video too. He said that he can get away with fouls because "he's Michael Jordan." He actually said that haha. He was a great defender, but in my honest opinion, everyone keeps overexaggerating his defensive skills. If there was no hand-checking in the NBA back then, there is NO way he would have had as many steals as he has right now.
Whatever his steals or blocks totals are, they don't really prove whether a guy is a great defender. This guy has probably caused the opponents he faced to turn-over even more through sub-par plays. Well how can he do so much and still lead in scoring? If he played today, it's almost certain he will play more quality minutes thanks to more rest time due to officials pausing the game so often to watch video replays. Not to mention, the rules of today's NBA, well I can imagine the rest.
Unlike some of the players in today's game, Jordan's defense was tenacious for all 48 minutes. He didn't take time off from defending and that was what made his Chicago Bulls special.
Jordan was so good man... i got tired of watching him dominate..i started to lose interest in watching the NBA, cause you knew what the outcome was going to be at the end of the season..he destroyed the competition single-handedly..i was so glad to see him retire, cause it leveled out the playing field(court)...nobody should be that good...GO LAKERS!!!!
This video is deceptive. Yes Jordan was one of the best perimeter defenders the game has seen, and he did lead the league in steals once but all those blocks shown here can confuse people about Jordan's game. Jordan averaged LESS than 1 block per game during his career. He was not a center or power forward, and blocking was not a consistent strong point of his.
Each position has a different standard for each stat. Just like 70% from the line is below average for a guard but good for a center. 49% from the field is roughly average for a center, but great for a guard.
@Blackwwoolff Exactly! That's why I hate people who always say D-Rose is this inconsistent shooter and LeBron is this consistent shooter...plain stupid comments!
"blocking was not a consistent strong point of his (MJ)"
So I guess he wound up with back to back seasons of 100+ blocks & is #1 All Time in blocks by a guard for nothing huh? This guy 1 season had more blocks than 10 starting centers!!
This must be another MJ worshiper who treats the slightest criticism of him as borderline blasphemy. What part of "CONSISTENT" do you not understand? You brought up 2 seasons. The man played in 15 seasons. If you do something only twice in 15 years how does that possibly qualify as "consistent"? In the other 13 seasons of his career he went no higher than 83 blocks even once. So what are you talking about?
What part of All Time LEADER in blocks for guards in HISTORY don't U get?
Until U can SHOW ME anyone else that's ahead of him, go back to playing with your toys & leave the basketball discussions to those of us who have some historical perspective on the game..
Where did you learn to argue? You're arguing something COMPLETELY different from what I said in my original post. To be the all time leader FOR A GUARD, means nothing. When did guards become the standard for blocked shots? Using guards as a standard for this stat sets the bar extremely low. That still doesn't make shot blocking A CONSISTENT part of his game. It just makes him good for a position that doesn't do this often.
Secondly, we actually have no idea who the true all time leader in blocked shots for anyone is, let alone for a guard, because the stat was not kept officially until 1974. (You do know that basketball began before MJ entered the league in 1984. Right?)
Finally, Dr. J, who is basically the same height as MJ, (depending on the source) is listed as a sf/ g combo. Yes he played some guard also. Look at the 1980 Finals and you will see. In only 11 seasons in the NBA, he had 400 more blocks than MJ had in 15 seasons. At the end of the day, shotblocking still was not a CONSISTENT part of MJ's game. 2 seasons of 100+ out of 15 is not consistent.
You do realize that stats prior to 1980 are extremely inflated. West, Elgin etc would not have averaged over 30 PPG or half their rebounds in defense oriented eras. And no Dr J didnt play SG if he did it was very rare. MJ played PG for half a season and averaged almost as many triple doubles as Magic. Does that mean Jordan was a better PG? Jordan was the best. Skill, power.. whatever any era, anywhere.
Actually the only individual stat prior to the 80's that is possibly inflated is rpg. Scoring is based upon the same principle in any era- # of shots taken and made. Apg are inflated in the modern era, because the rules for getting them has changed. Magic, Stockton and Isiah were avg. 2-3 more apg in just 38mpg than Big O was in 45mpg. Also if the 80's was so tough defensively why does that decade have the highest fg% allowed of any other decade in league history?
"Also if the 80's was so tough defensively why does that decade have the highest fg% allowed of any other decade in league history?"
Easy man, because the game of the 60's and 70's was a run and gun style of play. They made a FG attempt within 5 seconds of crossing the halfcourt. 60's and 70's shot more than any other era with a the worst FG% in history. The 90's was the best defensive era of all time and this era... lol. Well this era is some shitty zone being played
where absolutely no power is given to the PF/C position. The rules benefit perimeter players now. So obviously the Frontcourt is always going to shoot a higher FG% than the backcourt. So those are my reasons. That and more HOF players played in the 80's than any other era. Including great scorers like Jordan, Barkley, Kareem, Gervin etc, etc. While players today like Iverson, Kobe etc are just volume shooters. Why dont you look up the FT% and compare other eras to the 80's
Im not one of those guys who think players today suck ass and players of the past are invincible. Im just merely saying Lebrons crab dribble. You know the one where he stands at the arc dribbles poorly then charges to the hoop like a running back. That doesnt cut it my friend.
jordan is a piece of shit, a cheater, a gambler, who is a racist jerk. i don't care how good you are on the court, how do you do that to your wife and kids, what an asshole.
