Well on the bright side, if you have insomia or just having trouble falling asleep, and you don't have sleeping pills, this movie willl probably help.
this is so stupid. they're just walking in the desert. i know that it's supposed to be symbolic for human struggle against nature but this is not entertaining. someone please explain.
@DianeeCookiee I don't know how you got that this scene is symbolizing human struggle against nature, but I don't think it's about that. I think the scene is trying to set the viewer for the same sense of despair as the characters are in.
No dude. This is one the rare movies where it gets even worse when you're high. This film is a metaphor for Gus van Sant taking a crap, and nothing else.
I don't know, I like the other bourne movie's better cause they were slower paced, less like over the top violence. this one had way too much action and fighting
Andy Warhol's "Empire" is a 7 hour long unbroken shot of the Empire State Building. For non-experimental films Sokurov's 2002 film "Russian Ark" is also a film that is one unbroken shot (about 90 min I believe) which also features thousands of extras and a plot involving time travel. (!) I'm sure there are longer shots than this in "Satantango" and "Werckmeister Harmonies."
Why does Gerry kill the other Gerry at the end of the movie? Does Gerry kill the other Gerry out of the other Gerry's request? When Gerry says "I'm leaving," is he basically asking Gerry to kill him?
@tod315 well my interpretation of the film is : it's about going from one "state" to another. I think there's only one Gerry, the 1st who is pretty weak (Casey Affleck) and the one he becomes (Matt Damon). In this trial, being lost in the desert, the first Gerry become the second. Ok, it's an interpretation. Also you can take a look to Elephant, Last Days (why not Milk) : there are similar scenes : one killer shooting the other, men "hugging" like the Gerries (kissing in fact). Great movies imo!
@tod315 He dies. Gerry kills him. I think that the reason is simple irritation and madness that builds up during the walk. You can see first that "Gerry" that said childishly "I'm leaving" is putting his hands on Damon (He is a "spoiled" Gerry, a "weak" Gerry - he also cries a couple of times during the film.) maybe with intention to kill him first, but he is too weak, and Damon (the mature Gerry) succeeds in overcoming him. The film is powerful in so many ways.
@LovelessSeime — the movie as a whole is a meditation on the human spirit. The willingness to exist. Matt represents the blossoming adult individual while Casey depicts the child nature to be spoiled and guided. When he says, "I am leaving." I take it as a cue that Matt Damon has decided to relinquish his naiveties and therefore destroy the idealism of being saved, and being the adult saving itself with full spirit. It's a sort of "shedding the baggage scene." Just what I got from it.
@LovelessSeime it symbolizes their love for eachother. it may not be homosexual love, but it is love in the sense that one person can trust another person so much, that when they fear death, they can turn to that person for reliance, and that person will carry out death for them, so they don't have to struggle, or suffer. the story that this is based off of says that both men were incredible friends, and never fought, so maybe it's a symbol of their companionship?

@LovelessSeime I'm pretty sure he doesn't kill him. One Gerry collapses and dies, and the other Gerry, realizing that he's dead (or dying), gives him a hug and starts sobbing (choking sounds).
@LovelessSeime I Think he kills him but whats really important is, on one hand that he kills him because hes dragging im down, hes weak and hes giving up when the other wants to find a way out so he leaves the other one to his fate by killing him. its a metaphore. On the other hands its obvious that this is not clear and you never know if they're hugging/loving each other or if they're havinf dead fight. Love, sex and death are linked and homosexuality is here too. Anyways this is my mind.
When I first heard the background soundtrack I thought it had also been done by Arvo Part. It is totally in sync with the various versions of Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel" in the rest of the film. Absolutely haunting !!
There should be a fucking sequel to this movie.
Gerry 2: Even loster
Oh, and have it be a 3.5 hour movie.

QUESTION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE:
Why does Gerry kill the other Gerry at the end of the movie? Does Gerry kill the other Gerry out of the other Gerry's request? When Gerry says "I'm leaving," is he basically asking Gerry to kill him?
LovelessSeime 2 years ago
I don't think he kills him. It seemed Gerry dies from starving or something.

But at the end, one Gerry puts his hands around the other Gerry's neck, and you hear choking sounds.

maybe a last hug..
