The whole technology this screen is based on is noted for colour accuracy not response time, and as a result this screen is aimed at colour professionals like photographers and digital artists, NOT gamers. This screen has a response time of about 12ms, rather than the newest TN based panels which have as low as 2ms (but poorer colour reproduction). Do your research before you buy, is all I can say.
@ShokaLion Where did you hear this? Because every site on the internet says that CRTs have a significantly higher response time than LCD displays. Even the 1 ms LCD displays they have now can't rival the response times of CRTs.
@ikilluish You misunderstand me. I was referring, specifically, to the HP LP2475w, or more generally to IPS based LCD screens, which generally sacrifice response time in the pursuit of good colour accuracy. IPS is not the screen technology generally favoured by gamers for this reason.
I couldn't agree more about the merits of CRT screens. They have a faster response time, have a wider colour gamut, and all the rest of it. Unfortunately however the world has moved on.
You can't see the difference input lag but when it's high enough you can definitely "feel" it; that is, when you move the mouse you don't get that 1:1 movement feeling between the screen and the movement of your mouse.
LCDs and LEDs are expensive shits. The kings are PLASMA and CRT. No lagg, no ms response time. They have natural colours, and pictures. Go and buy a 50" PLASMA :) My eyes are always tired because of my LED(light and lagg).
@MrTeknics AFAK plasma have input lag just like LCDs. Plasma might be better than LCD in many ways, but I don't think that's one of them. That said, I assume you're not even talking about input lag at all, bu that's what this video is about, so it makes no sense not to be talking about it.
Apparently, the first version of the LP2475w had an S-IPS panel with a 31ms input lag, but it was updated around March 2009 to an H-IPS panel with only 4ms input lag. I am probably going to get myself one of these, and will make sure it is the newer H-IPS version.
@hedgehog1965uk Is this true? Is there any way to verify this by looking at a model number on the monitor? My LP2475w has always felt off...I'm trying to remember right now, and I can't remember if I got it before 2010 or not. I've always had a hard time trying to play games on it, and have noticed that sometimes I can catch voices and lips not syncing up together in videos. I feel like I remember buying an H-IPS monitor, but I've never been able to do anything on here that requires fast input.
@PogueSquadron Well I have read some conflicting and confusing things about this issue. My original comments were based on the review of the monitor on bit-tech.net from July 2009, but the review on tftcentral.co.uk states that, even with the H-IPS panel, the monitor has an average input lag of 25ms (a single frame at 40fps, so still not too bad). I have recently bought one of these monitors from Crescent Electronics in the UK, but haven't tested it out properly yet.
@hedgehog1965uk Well maybe I'm not crazy then. it's an amazing monitor for color (I do a lot of color related work), but I just can't use it for games. Constantly make my on screen character jump late or attack late or whatever. With my new PC build I'm going to invest in a second monitor just for games, and use this just for work...just can't beat that color.
@PogueSquadron I am disappointed that you find the monitor unusable for games, cos I primarily bought it for that purpose and wanted my games to look amazing. I just hope that my monitor doesn't suffer from as much input lag as yours or I am just less sensitive to it.
@peter3337 as u can see in the video the LCD is slightly behind. that is input lag. for fast action games u want the monitor with least input lag. old CRT monitors have no input lag and the really hardcore gamers prefer them to LCD monitors. LCD monitors with 1ms or 2ms response time have less input lag than common 5ms response time monitors. HP and DELL monitors even tho have good colors and well built have bad input lag times.
The input lag on computer displays is nothing compared to tvs. I'm still using a crt because the input lag is just horrendous on lcd hdtvs. The lag that I see between the lcd monitor and the crt here is negligent, hardly at all.
No, I didnt need to know the model of camera. But the settings used to capture it. Idealy you should have used a sport mode which has a higher shutter speed.
How many FPS is the camera recording the video at? If your Fujifilm S5700 is set to capture 30 fps but the CRT displays at 60fps then you would not be able to see a difference between the two monitors. Lag will be invisible. Second, youtube downcoverts to 15 or 30fps so any lag in the crt wont likely show up in the video.
i guess if your a pro-gamer this isnt acceptable. but for everyone else this is still a very good monitor. keep in mind that this is S-IPS panel! a 24 inch lcd with that panel vs crt (with close to 0) input lag..? of course there's a difference. but: i would rather just use 2 monitors before i spent 500 bucks more on a monitor that has all that features. ..besides. keeping a replacement crt in the house is always a good idea anyways.
check out LG W2363D 120hz lcd. It has a "thru mode" feature that eliminates input lag making it exactly as fast as a CRT (faster if the CRT can't run at 120hz). But it has not option to contorl overdrive or sharpness so text is a little too sharp for me. Waiting for a 24" 1920x1200 120hz lcd. I'd like a bit more vertical space than 16:9 offer.
damm just got a 40" lcd samsung for my ps3 and i tryed to play mw2 but when i like press reload my game dude reload 1/5 a second later and aiming a pain in the ass, shud i return for a 42" plasma?o and does the best buy offer carry over from memorial day sale if i trade tvs in?
I think the slight video lag we see in this video is due to the Video card taking more time to render frames on the lager screen. I'm sure the CRT is faster but I notice inconsistencies. Some times the HP seems a lot closer to the CRT then others, leading me to believe their is another factor at play.
I currently run a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040U and I've always avoided LCD's until now as my CRT is going out. As far as the LAG twoPEU I noticed the lag in the LCD when he was going to scope mode.
Actually, CRTs are superior to lcds in terms of color reproduction, black levels, contrast, viewing angles and input lag. LCDs have many many years before they come close to CRTs on those aspects.
i find it appaling that the market has been flooded with lcds and all crts have been removed. main reason for this is because it is much cheaper to ship lcds thanks to lower weight and size compared to crts. more profit margins for the bosses and share holders...
CRTs r not really that bad..If they spend more time on developing better CRTs we could see as good or even better picture quality on an CRT..
Couple of weeks back i bought a 42inch LCD and today i compared the picture quality with a Plasma in a show room and i was sorely disappointed. Plasma is cheaper and sharpness is so much better than an LCD. When i was going to buy my TV ppl confused me with jargons like Ghosting problem, Full HD etc., offcourse none of that matter.LCD sucks.
@Natebeats Yes, but look at the price to. I purchased it last year for around $2000. Now it's like $1400 on amazon. I plan on buying the new updated Dell Model to have another 30". It's certainly an amazing display and possibly well(not after the newest one was released) the best panel out there. But remember folks you gotta spend good money for quality. CRTs are long gone from desktops, TVs are another story.
@KarthikSoun you should see my fully calibrated 53" Panasonic RPTV HD set, you think the plasma shunned LCD, this thing kicks it down the street, and it was made/bought back in '05
Not in this case. The LP2475w is a wide gamut display, so it can display a wider range of colors. It gets a reddish tint only when it isn't calibrated properly. Since the computer sends a signal that it believes to be not too red, but the monitor can display reds far beyond other regular-gamut monitors, so it's "redder". Wide Gamut displays should never be used without calibration.
Mmm, I don't think so. CRT's are almost always more 'true' in displaying color. Though as somebody else said, wide gamut on more expensive LCD's (like this one) allows for better range. The HP here just isn't calibrated, which should be done right out of the box because the stock color settings are way off.
What is it that makes input lag anyway on flat screens?
I see that this has some lag when compared to a CRT side by side, but does one notice it when playing and not having something to compare to? Better to wait for the next gen IPS screen?
There's absolutely a little lag, but still very good work by the HP! There's so many other benefits with a full HD monitor like that, so that little lag doesn't matter to me. :)
Huh? Seriously, I didn't see anything. I downloaded the video so I could try with Media Player Classic, and still didn't see anything. To me, it's pretty much synchronized. Pretty good monitor. Expected buy for my birthday!
By the way, do you know how to "fix" that reddish issue?
If you press stop then click to about 7.5 seconds (without pressing play) you'll notice the crt has already unzoomed while the lcd is still in scope view.

Input lag is the amount of time it takes for your monitor/screen to display what actually takes place in your PC.
If you press the attack button, you expect your character to fire IMMEDIATELY right? Not the case for the monitors with high input lag.
