  • I have a two year old absolutely terrified of a blue tarp. Do you have any suggestions to get him over it. thanks

  • Sir. You are an absolute artist. This vid was a goose-bump inducing joy to watch.

Speaking as a lifelong English rider who is about to try Western style, your lessons are invaluable.

Bet you wish you could come and watch - guaranteed to laugh your head off!

  • Wow I've never seen a tail trimmed like that lol.

  • this worked so well on my little boy, he stops the second i say whoa now and gets relaxed when i give him his head *once he's stopped of course* I ca get him to stand even while my english friend has her horse lope circles around me ^^ thanks so much for these podcasts ^^

  • It's the only thing, that really works. I tried the backing up method on a ottb for ages, but it wouldn't do. I tried this one and he got it right within one day.

  • hey im an english rider but my engish pony dose cutting reining and campdraft but i use her more for jumping lol

  • i have just bought an ex race horse i8 was just wondering if you could help me with a problem when i ride her ir i slap th reins aganst her neck she takes off how do i fix this?

  • Don't slap the reins on the neck then Moonie. The engine is in the back anyways. Slapping necks I find confuses Horses. regards

  • excellent!!!

cant wait to try this on my 4yo thoroughbred mare thisafternoon!!!

she will NOT stand still at all!!

so hopefully this will help! thanks heaps!!

  • Lovely video. I did this with my green mare yesterday. With 1 rein contact she spun around in circles so fast I got dizzy! Good news. She was only like that for about 2 minutes total each direction before she figured out that contact on the rein meant stop and flex. Thank you!

  • Well done and the amount they spin is directly related to the lack of quality of the lateral mouth. Regards

  • HI John

I think your videos are great.

Just wanted to know how much time would you spend on each session.

  • The longest period of time I train any horse is 20 minutes Anne

    regards

  • no longer than that Anrose. Just a matter of habit and the job is done.

  • John, love your videos! What kind of saddle is that?

  • You don't want to know Sea. It is a new swinging fender half breed australian stock saddle but I won't tel you the brand. No good. regards

  • John, I asked for a friend, she wanted me to send you this message ~

"tell John I love the simplicity of the saddle. and it looked very stable. how is comfort, for him and the horse? Or just send nice John my message "

  • Regards to your friend. They are magnificent saddles and there are some great brands here but my one hasn't turned out re quality. Never mind, they get a hammering, just like me :)

  • I'm over here in America, in the market for a saddle - a wade tree - can you recommend an aussie stock saddle brand in a wade? 'preciate it! (Oh, and I'm gonna try this technique with my 5 y.o. 16 HH QH, who is still a little eager at times.)

  • He may have a small mouth Kara. Some of them can't open their mouths as far as others and can need a thinner bit. Others just think they can't. Just make sure you don't 'take it out' let him drop it. Go watch the ear shy pod cheers

  • I loved this, thankyou so much! Im training alittle 2yr old who doens' like to stand and i'm going to start him on this and see how he does, :D I have a problem for you, whenever i go to take off my horses birdle when wre done he leans in to me w/ his head and chews tilli take it out, he doesn't toss his head though, any ideas?

  • Mr.HP, when are you going to do a video on mounting? I can not wait.

  • I like this trainer he is good with horses teaches like me.

  • To get your horse to stand, make him work. I mean is if your horse does not stand when getting on, get off, and do some groundwork and then try and get on. If no, make him do something, like back-up. He will sooner or later figure out that he will stand

  • Wow! You really made alot of sense to me..I have a young drum hose colt who will not stand still for being groomed, I can tie him to the wall or even cross tie him and his butt end is everywhere, any idea on how to end this? It has gotten to be like a thorn in my side come grooming time.

  • Cross tying horses can be the start of weaving and causes swinging. If you tie straight to a rail, simply do not allow the horse to invade your space at all. Use Uncle Pat's prochipine Game and your problem is solved. That is simply invasion of your space and manipulation of you . Regards

  • so simple, wish we had seen this before we had to give up our horse due to lack of control. Thanks so much

  • Thanks Slothskin. Best of Luck and it works on every horse....100%. Depending on the driver of course :)

  • this is so simple. thank you. my mare is going to be pissed that I've got this figured out.

  • My 10 yr. daughter and I watched this yesterday and this morning went out and used this with a Welsh pony and a 1/2 arab, both who don't like to stand and walk off with us. It worked wonders!! We both got great results! The ex-saddlebred 1/2 arab was particularly grateful. BTW, we are english riders! Thanks so much.

  • My pleasure indeed Madaam. Thanks

  • Great video and very useful, Thanks. Don't especially like the "anti english riding" comments, kinda of insulting, but I suppose in all disciplines there are people who don't know what they are doing.

  • Sorry comment above read worse than I meant it. I Can't edit the comment so I'll just say Great Video very informative.

  • No worries daz. A lot of what I say is 'tongue in cheek' Ozzy humour is a strange thing :) Regards

  • Thanks horsewoman. You know, if they did this now and again, they wouldn't need to yank on the reins at halt in the first place. The horse would have halt in it's mind :) Regards

  • Think this is very helpful advice. Will be trying this on a silly stock horse that my friend owns that runs backwards when getting on. Will be trying it on my fidgety nervous pony that only knows go when you get on her. Hopefully this will do the trick. Hopefully this video can convince a lot of no it all English riders who yank on both reins as soon as the horse walks.

  • Have to agree there are alot of english riders who use there hands to stop rather than their seat but I would have thought there are equally western beginners who do the same.

  • Super helpful!!! Many Thanks! ~Skipa
