i thought this was a good knock down.. with what they had thats great where im from we have good mutual aid to fires they had only two firefighters on the line and a guy workin the pumps dont be dissing our brothers they did a great job
I have watched this video so many times, in sheer amazement the description says something about a "great knockdown" seriously?!?!? a great knockdown would have been at stopping the fire when it was still room and contents, I don't know maybe around 1:20min you know prior to the flash.....just sayin!! nothing to be proud of, unless you consider providing the entire world with a great what not to do video!!
I actually live close to this town but the town i live in is much smaller but its a shame to see a large department like this be so bad our small department could run circles around urs.....for cryin out loud ur guys are falling down before they even get in the bulding what a shame
What the hell... @ 1:42 he didnt even have his helm on. I'd be punishing these guys big time. I know you dont always know the full story behind the fire but something that basic is inexcuaseable.
This is one of the most pathetic fire scenes I have witnessed in a while. It took a 1:50sec to get water on the fire after stretching the the initial attack line. The fire should've been contained to floor one, but it got up to floor two and then ran the eve, potentially getting into the attic space. These firefighters should be punished for their poor performance, there is no excuse for this.
you know it does not matter what size hose they used or how many fire fighrters there were or if they are a volunteer fire department or who video it but what does matter is that im alive most of my shit was allready gone before i call because it was real hard to call the fire department when your phone melted so (ha friken ha)
you know let me tell yall some thing first of all im the girl that almost died in that small one room apartment fire second of all regardless if the huntsville fire department is a volunteer fire department they did a damm damm damm great job because im alive because of them and if you think you could have done it better then why wasnt you ass here to put it out so all you fuckers that want to talk shit yall all can KISS MY ASS
reguardless paid or volunteer. theres should be some training before this oviously numerious things went wrong. after the flash. it all went to shit. theres was one FF wearing scba, the handline was deployed but not charged in a timely manner, staffing was low no backup person. they are so worried about the flames from the smoke/gases comming from the house they dont size up the main portion it could have been avoided if there was a prompt initial knockdown not a stand and watch the fire grow
LOL firefighter down at 1:34 . Oh by the way being a firefighter is a hard job to get done and yes i would pay taxes even if i get shitty fire service because i wouldnt put this out myself fuck that. If u dont like the service then put the fire out urself and dont dial 911 .
Man I love how people like to talk trash like they know whats going on. Huntsville FD is a combination department with only 7 full time FF's. When this incident occurred the full time FF's did not work nights. It was up to a duty crew, which at that time consisted of 1 FF on a Ford F550 minipumper. The FF's on scene mainly arrived in pov. Yes water could have been delivered faster but the FF on the truck was getting dressed and pulling the line waiting for other FF's to arrive.
shocking the time it took that should have been contained at 0:40 instead half the place went up..... i hate those type of apartments theres similar ones to that here in nz,i wouldnt let an animal stay in.
Was this the Huntsville Fire Department? Hopefully things will improve with the acquisition of several new pumper trucks. I don't agree sending a mini-pumper to a structure fire over something along the lines of a large shed.
Wow!. What was that, like a pre-connected stretch of less than two-hundred feet? What was the hold-up??? And the comment of the first due truck not having any seat-mounted packs--that's a lame excuse. I mean c'mon, before you walk away from the rig, grap your pack out of the compartment (along with anything else) and then go to work. Walking away w/o a pack is a recipe for injury or death.
Hope this department uses this incident as inspiration to train a bit harder for the next time.
Not bad for a training video on what not to do. Why did that hose line just sit on the ground for well over one minute and a half of another not flowing water, not even charged! Once the hose was flowing water it took less than ten seconds for him to knock down the blaze that could have been much smaller with way less involvement. I hope this was a good training aid for you guys as it was for me. I wish ya'll the very best, and pray for those you serve.
Holy crap! I have NO experience and I know this was WAY too long to get frickin water on the fire! What were they waiting for?? I swear it looked like they are gonna break out the marshmellows and weenies and have a party...come on fellas! This is shoddy work!
Why did it take so long to get water(almost 3 minutes)? Why was there no radioes with the crew at the door? Why did the crew not have all of their equipment on getting off the truck? I agree that this should be a training video. The fire department was lucky. After the room flashed over, this was no longer just a contents fire. Someone needs to light a fire under their butts and get them in gear. This was a disgraceful fire call. Hope some butt chewing occured after this fire.
Wow Huntsville yall need to get your shit together come on, that took way to long, yall are even a paid dept, with a shit load of people and trucks that sucked im sorry, yall had no idea wtf yall were doing when you first got to the seen. But it was funny when that one dude tripped.
You need to get your shit together. Learn how to put your truck in pump gear, advance the line interior and sprout a set of nuts. By the way is this a volunteer Fire Dept.? That would explain it...If ya'll are going through a ball shortage let us know and we'll send you up a set. Cheers!
well i think the fire department should have a front line engine instead of a mini pumper that doesnt have jump seats because it took time to mask up and getting the line charged and the way we do it we charge the line apon arrivalright away and have four front line engines and bc second engine's are rescue and two ladder trucks and two reserve engine's andf if it take's that long to charge the line with a mini pumper we would be in truble trying to get the fire out .
I just want to say to the Huntsville Fire Department what a great job you all did at this fire. This should be a training tape for some fire departments to see how to get a quick knock down on a fire with a little bit of water. All in all great video and all around a great job. Keep up the good work and be safe!!!!!!!
Great Job Huntsville, my dept. uses combination nozzles but I prefer smooth bore's. Either way, fire is out, nobody's hurt and everybody went home in the morning and that's all that counts! Stay safe everybody!
First of all, I work in nyc. Secondly, I would hate to be on the knob with one of those recreational type fog nozzles and one of those hobby types backing me up. That guy knocked the front of the building down but I guarantee it was still going inside. Move in you cowards.
Once again.....Your department is the right way! I'm not saying your wrong, but I'm saying that other people put out fires with other tools that work! Leave an open mind. By the way, the whole incident used 300 gallons of water and confined fire/water damage to the orginial apartment....I think they did okay!
They DID search all apartments, in fact the even evacuated the building next to it. I would disagree with your straight stream theory, but I know that a lot of people are stuck in the way THEIR department does things! I agree they should have been quicker! They did attack the fire at the correct spot, to prove this look how quickly the fire went out with no extension! The 2 1/2 was again a SECOND LINE requested!
You can disagree about nozzles all you want, but you're dead wrong. Anyone with any real fire duty under their belt knows that a smoothbore nozzle is the only nozzle. It has nothing to do with the way "MY" fire dept. does things. It has everything to do with physics. Take it from someone who knows engine work and not some volly to whom pushing down a hallway is but an abstract thought.
It's Amazing that every MAJOR fire department, Including Houston, has fog nozzles? I guess they are a bunch of idiots too! I guess a smoothbore works great when you fight fire through a window. Down south is aggressive, we go inside!
First a 2-1/2" line was certainly NOT needed or advised here. What they needed to do was get water on the fire much faster and have the maneuverability of a smaller handline: 1-3/4". And WHAT THE FUCK were they doing spraying a fog stream? Can you say "PUSH THE FIRE THROUGH THE BUILDING!" A solid stream of water is the only way to properly fight a structural fire...PERIOD!
Simple, I'm an extra set of eyes. I was there long before they arrived! I'm not "telling" them, just suggesting. Sometimes a person who is not wrapped up in the call and the "rush" can see things you can't! A firefighter is a firefighter....no matter what department you run with!
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Please tell me the mini-pumper crew was first on scene because they just cleared an EMS local, or a BS outside fire. Beyond wondering why in the world a mini-pumper with only two firefighters was first arriving on a multiple dwelling fire, why did it take so long to get water flowing? And who was the donkey in the background screaming for a 2 1/2? If I was the chief of this department, we would not post an embarrassment like this on the internet.
First, this department responds with a mini-pumper to 90% of calls, no matter what the emergency. Second, I was screaming to get a 2 1/2. They were getting ready to pull a second 1 1/2 which would not have supported the building if it were to run the attic. This construction+fire load+exposures called for it. Luckly a second line was not needed at all!
Based on what I was told the fire started in the downstairs apartment on a stove. As far as extension the top apartment had NO fire damage to the interior, just smoke. The attic had no extension either. Remember, these guys are in a mini-pumper with only two men, which means, no airpack seats! They had to set the pump, get dressed, AND pull the line.
i just want to get one thing straight the stove did not start the fire faulty wireing in the dish washer stater the fire i have the fire report and a copy of the recall that maytag had on that dishwasher
Damn! took them long enough to get water on the fire. They had heavy fire blowin out the front but what about back? How much extension was there into the attic area? Any extension into the upstairs apartments? You get a good engine man on the knob and he knock anything down with a an 1 3/4" line!
I really like the guy with the camera hollering orders....that would get REAL old after he told me i needed a 2 and a half for one apartment in the building. Which was a wrong judgment on his part , becuase as i said before, you could of made a heck of a stop with a inch and a half or inch and 3 quarters, maybe even 2 hand lines
I was filming the fire! I'm NOT a firefighter with Huntsville, however I have been in the fire service for 6 years. I know most of these guys very well and have trained with them. I'm a freelance videographer for the several news agencies in the area. As far as the 2 1/2, that is easy! All wood building, common attic, lots of exposures, flashover, and Huntsville's history with apartment fires!
Still though, you do not need to be screaming orders, when you are as good as a civilian at a fireground. You are videoing a fire, not establishing command. As I said before, you would be told to leave after hollering orders. I am not critisizing you, I think what you do is great becuase it gives these fireman a chance to see where they need training at, and also what they did good, it was a good knock when they finally flowed water.
I was there, long before them! I was HELPING them. I don't know where you got the idea I was establishing command. I was asked to stay in my position by the fire chief because of my light. They welcomed what I had to say! An extra set of eyes never hurts!
i am not here to argue with you,but your judgement of needing a two a half was wrong.....but I just have a grudge against other people telling me how to fight a fire here.
Hard to comment on most of this, a nice job to say the least. Only thing that REALLY bothers me is the person that seems to be operating the camera. Why didn't he do a damn thing? He stood around with a camera and shouted orders, pull that hose or DO SOMETHING. Not going around saying "yea buddy, its gonna be bad buddy" What the heck man! Hand that camera off to someone and help your brothers!!!! Oh and a 2 1/2?? Come one!
Yeah, it did SEEM to take a while. But a compartment fire can grow so fast! Especially considering the flashover. We have no idea how far away the station was or anything. These guys deserve the benefit of the doubt.
Good Grief.....What took so long to get water on the fire?! All our front line appliances (New Zealand)have fully charged high pressure deliveries on the appliances.
It gives you 3 mins of water while other crews lay out low pressure lines. That fire should have and could have been knocked down on arrival. And Firefightingmarsh is right. 1.5 minutes and line is at the fire base...BUT it wasn't until 3.8 mins until water was on the fire!!
As a firefighter myself, this fire did get out of control...yes, signs did show a sign of a flashover...but this fire was venting threw the front door. Quick ventilation and a faster charged hose line could of kept this fire to only the one apartment, but instead, now you have fire ext. into the upper floors. The SCBA shouldnt of been a problem due to the fact that a engine should have built in jump seats ready to pack up in.
The first due truck for Huntsville FD is a mini-pumper carrying only 300 gallons of water. This single cab Ford Chasis does not have air pack seats, therefore requiring the firefighters to dawn SCBA on arrival.
even with 300 gallons of booster, at the stage the fire was at, you'd be suprised what that amount of water can do to cool down a room. There was one guy initially with SCBA, so your nozzleman wasnt going in with a backup right away...those 300 gal. couldve been well spent...Thankfully, the autoexposure didn't become full extension to the floor above.
I have fought my fair share of fire with a mini with 250 gallons of water, and this fire could of been knocked with the initial unit onscene,i understand the fact of not having a jump seat and having to pack up,but a firefighter could of prevented any more fire being spread from the start by a short exterior attack with a handline, when it got to flashover stage, it flashed and then cuaght the upper floors roof. I agree with FDNY.
Perfect tell-tale signs of a flashover. The obvious delay in getting water contributed to the rapid advancement of fire. There should have at least been booster water on that fire. To Firefightingmash---a line to the front door is not the same as having water at the front door.
yeah i know, but "knuschit" was making it sound like they were lacking in their duties, and i just said that to make the point that they were doing things wekk
i dont know much about fire fighting...but what the hell would u sit thee and wait 5 mins before attempting to stop the fire...we literally sat and watched that fire spread from 1 house to others...
OK! with all due respect..you are in no position to comment...because there are so many things that MUST happen before a fire attack starts...personel need to get on scene, SCBA needs to be put on, line needs to be layed out safety checks need to be done, the line needs to be charged then you can start fighting fire all that takes a lot of time...no matter how much you do it..from all i see in this video they did a damn good job...1.5 min into this video they had a line at the door.
I was there too. It was too funny seeing this go down.

It's Amazing that every MAJOR fire department, Including Houston, has fog nozzles? I guess they are a bunch of idiots too! I guess a smoothbore works great when you fight fire through a window. Down south is aggressive, we go inside!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
I'm speaking of Texas when I say that!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
yeah dummy they did check all the apartment on both sides because i helped them get every one out so unless you were there shut the HELL UP
imacountrygirl37 2 years ago
let me elaborate:

Very sad... these guy should be ashamed of themselves

took em long enough to get water.. if this is not your dept why were you telling them what to do?
eckyphats 4 years ago
Simple, I'm an extra set of eyes. I was there long before they arrived! I'm not "telling" them, just suggesting. Sometimes a person who is not wrapped up in the call and the "rush" can see things you can't! A firefighter is a firefighter....no matter what department you run with!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Please tell me the mini-pumper crew was first on scene because they just cleared an EMS local, or a BS outside fire. Beyond wondering why in the world a mini-pumper with only two firefighters was first arriving on a multiple dwelling fire, why did it take so long to get water flowing? And who was the donkey in the background screaming for a 2 1/2? If I was the chief of this department, we would not post an embarrassment like this on the internet.
007moose 4 years ago
First, this department responds with a mini-pumper to 90% of calls, no matter what the emergency. Second, I was screaming to get a 2 1/2. They were getting ready to pull a second 1 1/2 which would not have supported the building if it were to run the attic. This construction+fire load+exposures called for it. Luckly a second line was not needed at all!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
Based on what I was told the fire started in the downstairs apartment on a stove. As far as extension the top apartment had NO fire damage to the interior, just smoke. The attic had no extension either. Remember, these guys are in a mini-pumper with only two men, which means, no airpack seats! They had to set the pump, get dressed, AND pull the line.
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
i just want to get one thing straight the stove did not start the fire faulty wireing in the dish washer stater the fire i have the fire report and a copy of the recall that maytag had on that dishwasher
imacountrygirl37 2 years ago
Damn! took them long enough to get water on the fire. They had heavy fire blowin out the front but what about back? How much extension was there into the attic area? Any extension into the upstairs apartments? You get a good engine man on the knob and he knock anything down with a an 1 3/4" line!

i live in this apartment complex right across. does anyone know how it started?

I really like the guy with the camera hollering orders....that would get REAL old after he told me i needed a 2 and a half for one apartment in the building. Which was a wrong judgment on his part , becuase as i said before, you could of made a heck of a stop with a inch and a half or inch and 3 quarters, maybe even 2 hand lines
maskmanco15 4 years ago
I was filming the fire! I'm NOT a firefighter with Huntsville, however I have been in the fire service for 6 years. I know most of these guys very well and have trained with them. I'm a freelance videographer for the several news agencies in the area. As far as the 2 1/2, that is easy! All wood building, common attic, lots of exposures, flashover, and Huntsville's history with apartment fires!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
Still though, you do not need to be screaming orders, when you are as good as a civilian at a fireground. You are videoing a fire, not establishing command. As I said before, you would be told to leave after hollering orders. I am not critisizing you, I think what you do is great becuase it gives these fireman a chance to see where they need training at, and also what they did good, it was a good knock when they finally flowed water.
maskmanco15 4 years ago
I was there, long before them! I was HELPING them. I don't know where you got the idea I was establishing command. I was asked to stay in my position by the fire chief because of my light. They welcomed what I had to say! An extra set of eyes never hurts!
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
i am not here to argue with you,but your judgement of needing a two a half was wrong.....but I just have a grudge against other people telling me how to fight a fire here.
maskmanco15 4 years ago
speaking for myself, i am not telling you how to fight a fire...from one fireman to another, its called a critique...
fdnyphotographer 4 years ago
Hard to comment on most of this, a nice job to say the least. Only thing that REALLY bothers me is the person that seems to be operating the camera. Why didn't he do a damn thing? He stood around with a camera and shouted orders, pull that hose or DO SOMETHING. Not going around saying "yea buddy, its gonna be bad buddy" What the heck man! Hand that camera off to someone and help your brothers!!!! Oh and a 2 1/2?? Come one!
cwilson216 4 years ago
Yeah, it did SEEM to take a while. But a compartment fire can grow so fast! Especially considering the flashover. We have no idea how far away the station was or anything. These guys deserve the benefit of the doubt.

at like 3.5 min into the video, is that a white helmet wiht the pipe???do huntsville officers wear white helmets
firefightingmash 4 years ago
Good Grief.....What took so long to get water on the fire?! All our front line appliances (New Zealand)have fully charged high pressure deliveries on the appliances.
It gives you 3 mins of water while other crews lay out low pressure lines. That fire should have and could have been knocked down on arrival. And Firefightingmarsh is right. 1.5 minutes and line is at the fire base...BUT it wasn't until 3.8 mins until water was on the fire!!

read the comment TheBravestOnline said about the apparatus
firefightingmash 4 years ago
As a firefighter myself, this fire did get out of control...yes, signs did show a sign of a flashover...but this fire was venting threw the front door. Quick ventilation and a faster charged hose line could of kept this fire to only the one apartment, but instead, now you have fire ext. into the upper floors. The SCBA shouldnt of been a problem due to the fact that a engine should have built in jump seats ready to pack up in.
maskmanco15 4 years ago
The first due truck for Huntsville FD is a mini-pumper carrying only 300 gallons of water. This single cab Ford Chasis does not have air pack seats, therefore requiring the firefighters to dawn SCBA on arrival.
TheBravestOnline 4 years ago
ok and even if they were SCBA seats you have to mask up, hood and gloves and all that
firefightingmash 4 years ago
even with 300 gallons of booster, at the stage the fire was at, you'd be suprised what that amount of water can do to cool down a room. There was one guy initially with SCBA, so your nozzleman wasnt going in with a backup right away...those 300 gal. couldve been well spent...Thankfully, the autoexposure didn't become full extension to the floor above.
fdnyphotographer 4 years ago
I have fought my fair share of fire with a mini with 250 gallons of water, and this fire could of been knocked with the initial unit onscene,i understand the fact of not having a jump seat and having to pack up,but a firefighter could of prevented any more fire being spread from the start by a short exterior attack with a handline, when it got to flashover stage, it flashed and then cuaght the upper floors roof. I agree with FDNY.
maskmanco15 4 years ago
Perfect tell-tale signs of a flashover. The obvious delay in getting water contributed to the rapid advancement of fire. There should have at least been booster water on that fire. To Firefightingmash---a line to the front door is not the same as having water at the front door.
fdnyphotographer 4 years ago
yeah i know, but "knuschit" was making it sound like they were lacking in their duties, and i just said that to make the point that they were doing things wekk
firefightingmash 4 years ago
i dont know much about fire fighting...but what the hell would u sit thee and wait 5 mins before attempting to stop the fire...we literally sat and watched that fire spread from 1 house to others...
knuschit 4 years ago
OK! with all due respect..you are in no position to comment...because there are so many things that MUST happen before a fire attack starts...personel need to get on scene, SCBA needs to be put on, line needs to be layed out safety checks need to be done, the line needs to be charged then you can start fighting fire all that takes a lot of time...no matter how much you do it..from all i see in this video they did a damn good job...1.5 min into this video they had a line at the door.
firefightingmash 4 years ago
it took long enough to stretch a line SCBA?
