The footage at the 50-second mark is either Gambling Lady or Lady of Burlesque.

I read a great anecdote in one of her obituaries about her role in The Colbys in 1985. One day she said to a young actress "Let's go. We've got a scene to do" The actress said "Well, I don't feel it right now. The vibes aren't right." So Stanwyck says "'Fuck your vibes! Get your butt in here and start acting!" No wonder directors loved her.

Part of her success was the fact that she was not a conventional beauty (small eyes, long nose, flat chest). She was pretty enough that, with the right wardrobe and makeup, etc., she could play glamorous roles like the Lady Eve. But she was also plain enough to play dowdy women like Stella Dallas. This gave her a range that otherwise talented actresses like Kate Hepburn and Bette Davis could not match.

i love that last picture, the one jennifer jason leigh's autograph shows up on. me and my father have gotten into little fights over it, if you can believe it. i think it's a fantastic picture of her and he keeps saying "eh, it's nothing special"

my father loves her but he thinks she's ugly. i rank her easily in my top 5 and i think she's insanely sexy. she reminds me of kate winslet actually...

No, you're not alone. I agree with what Leigh says but *how* she says it is unconvincing. Luckily I'm a big Stanwyck fan and I don't need convincing to know that she was one of the greatest actresses ever to grace cinema.

I actuially kind of like the plainness to the narration. I think it goes well with a montage because then it's not too much distraction. It's really just commentary anyways. and like rubytuesday said you don't need convincing to know she's one of the best.
