Stop whining that everything is racist. You're racist too. Everyone is. It's part of human nature. We're not exactly angels, you know. As long as it doesn't go beyond words, it won't kill you. This is actually a great melody, really catchy tune, and of all Paul's throwaways, this is probably at the very bottom of the throwaway heap.
Paul has some underlying tension and cleverly covered it up in this interview.
What would happen if he said he wanted to nig [renege] out of a situation. He was upset and used his music to express it. Pot, now this. Paul, you can't erase an album!
@kostasxrysogelos "Recorded in the summer of 1979, when the future of Wings remained uncertain, the album was conceived at home on Paul's farm in Scotland." From Paul's website. Wings officially broke up in 1981, and Paul got arrested in 1980.
I seen him put on an awesome show recently. Even though this is one his best, it was not well known enough to include. The guy has wrote and cowrote thousands of great songs. God bless Paul and the Beatles.
@pumpybeanis. Forgive me for such a reactionary response. I shouldn't have became so belligerent.. I pride my reason and critical thinking skills and a response like my last only makes me stoop to the level of the fascists who try to censor my opinion and the free speech rights of this song.
Awesome music. One of the post-Beatle best. I suppose the pc crowd wil whine about the tittle but that's their problem. Nobody is forcing you to listen.
@lothguvnor i'm sure being called a twat by a troll tickles paul as he sits on his stacks of cash while i'm sure your troll wallet struggles to carry pennies
I think it says a lot about him! 1). money can't be you class, 2) He's just a long line of arrogant European's ,3) He's disrespectful to his fans i could go on but i think that's more than "nothing " already.
I am interested in knowing what you think my statement says about me though.
@lothguvnor Your comment says that you're very judgemental. There's a famous religious/philosophical line: "Judge not that you be not judged." If you personally were judged remotely as harshly as you're judging McCartney on whatever basis you're slamming him, then I'd say you might have a very unpleasant surprise coming. If you want to look down on such people from your self-conceived wondrous height, that's obviously your choice.
@stalkek NO it doesn't say that at all ,it says that regardless of this obviously racist comment i am able to critic his music without prejudice. I will add that i believe he is probably one of the greatest songwriters of our time ,but unlike the rest of his nut-hugging fans , his artistic contribution doesn't give him license to make such comment without protest. Live with it ,it's my opinion!
@lothguvnor On the basis of using the word Jap, the first 3 letters of Japanese, you've decided he's "obviously racist." You haven't considered it to be simply a throwaway title for a short song, which maybe somehow ust came to mind to him, perhaps related to spending time in jail in Japan? It seems precious little to sum up a person entirely in the negative. Also a tree produces the fruit proper to itself; if he was so negative his art wouldn't tend to be so overwhelmingly positive in spirit.
@stalkek "throwaway" It doesn't make you less of a racist because it was a off hand comment ,no more than it makes you less pregnant if your 2 months or 7 months gone! You must so detached from the issue yourself that you fail to understand how hurtful the word is , but i know many japanese people who tell me the "Jap" is no different to the as the word "nigger" to black people. So there it is!
@lothguvnor So if someone used the word Jap while not realising to some/many Japanese people it is offensive, it means they must be deeply racist? Is it okay to use a word like "douche" or whatever the word used, but not one like Jap? You can be personally offensive as long as you believe you have a good reason?
@lothguvnor I found the word 'Jap gold' in the Liverpool cathedral.. There's an exhibition of historic church vestments with gold embroidery. Jap gold is a term for metal threads which're developed and produced in Japan and used for gold embroidery. Just maybe Paul saw this too.
@yesiamize The fact that it is in the Liverpool cathedral we ca pretty much assume that it was written by a European and not a japanese national, which basically only confirms the mental attitude in that part of the world.
This album sounds like a good detour for this guy , but he title of this song is crass to say the least. He has dropped a heck of a lot of rungs on the human ladder in my estimation ,but nothing surprises me about the arrogance capable in Europeans.
It's a shame really because the man is an incredibly talented song writer ,so to come up with a title as disrespectful as that is disappointing. I guess money can't buy you CLASS!
@lothguvnor Or you can say whatever you want using ignorance as an excuse and escape the racism banner!?!?!?! Give me a break ,that's a cop out and a man of his experience should know better, there is no excuse for it.
He said himself that in Europe Jap isn't really a bad term, and that he short-handed it. He also changed the name to Frozen Japanese for the release in Japan.
I raed somewhere that John Lennon actualy liked this album. Said it was better than all the recent "poppy crap" (late 70s, i think) he's been putting out.
@DerekBayRoberts1 "Comming up" the single release to this album was the song that sent John to the woodshed and out of retirement and from that John Gave us the gift Of "Double Fantasy"
This is one of the most unusual song titles by a mainstream artist. I wonder if it has anything to do with Yoko Ono? I think Paul was being deliberately provocative.
I heard some say it was a reaction to the uptight people in Japan's government who passed legislation against grass. When Paul got busted by the cops, it seemed that he conceived the song behind bars. I heard others cried out against the use of the word "Jap." (Frozen to indicate how they would not warm up to relaxing with a little bit of stash. However, others asked why was it that few complain upon hearing the term "Brit," which clearly would refer to Pauls origin.
After hearing an interview from 1980 (which is available on YouTube), Paul said the song title refers to a "frozen Japanese landscape." He said that the song's melody sounded Asian to him. He was thinking about Mt. Fuji too. So, he thought of "Frozen Japanese" as a song title. Then, he shortened it. The whole story sounds disingenuous. The title is intentionally provocative. He could have called the song, "Mt. Fuji in Winter" or "The Snows of Fuji."
@Doleafol i'm pretty sure "The Snows of Fuji" wouldn't have worked because the album wasn't called "Fagpoetry" but maybe i'm just thinking too hard here
@Doleafol No, it wasn't anything to do with her I don't think. I'm think it AT THE MOST has something to do with him being arrested in Japan for carrying cannabis in his luggage.
