Hey Glenn, thanks for the video. I have recently upgraded from a PODxt (which I loved) to the HD which I am very underwhelmed by! What got me most was that there were very few killer sounds straight out of the box and I had to edit most presets to get them to work. If you check my youtube page then you'll hear the XT sounds really good whereas I'm yet to record anything with the HD. Hopefully I'll get into it with the help of your video but so far not loving it like the XT.
@wahwah666 A far as sound quality goes the HD units do sound better than the older XT's. But some of the amp models in the HD seem to lack the gain that some of the older XT models had. The good thing is these HD 500's are highly tweakable so the sounds are in there but sometimes you have to dig a bit to find the sweet spot.
can i run my headphones straight into the pod without being connected to anything eles?
is the tech 21 power engine 60 a good match with the pod or should i use studio monitors.im not recording or playing live just playing in my bedroom may play live eventually.thanks glenn your awsome
Hey! What speakers would You recommend to use with this unit? Maximum 300$ to spend though...and what about connecting a standard computer 5.1 speaker system to it? Would it work?
Glen, Thanks for such an in-depth review of the Pod HD. It was what I needed as I am considering this unit but wanted to know what is sounded like without always hearing speed metal. Sounds great and your playing is first rate. Thanks again. Peter
@joedodge1 There are some really great demos of people doing that type of music with the HD500's. They seem to be using the Angel P-Ball model mostly.
@Firebird191 I just go right into the front of the Dr. Z. I only use it for time based FX though not distortion. I use stomp boxes to get my distortion.
@marwutz Oh yes I had the first POD Bean, then the XT-Live then the X3 and now these HD units. These new HD units are far more advanced and sound better in my opinion for most types of music.
Great POD HD videos...thank you for posting them!!! Just purchased a POD HD500 and can't wait to try it. In the mean time...can you tell me the song that starts at the 18 second mark? Do you have a video of this song and the patch you used?
@simonpvo2 Sure, I use Cubase SX3 and EZ Drummer for most of my stuff. Sometimes I use Superior Drummer if I can't get what I need out of EZ but mostly it's EZ Drummer and I use the Nashville Kit.
Hey Glenn , very informative vids you make , very helpfull . only 1 point of criticism in generall . I've always been really confused about the differences between the POD desktop, floor and rack models. To the best of my knowledge, they all have the same features but the floor models allow easier performing and are equally good for recording too because of the XLR and USB options. Is this correct? Would be delighted if you could enlighten me about this.
Thanks a ton and respect and wishes from India. :)
@udayvirgarg22 yes Uday, the PD HD and the HD500 are basically the same "brain" but the HD500 is designed more for live performance where as the Desktop POD HD is designed for a fixed installation like in a studio. But both units offer USB and digital out recording.
I bought the POD X3 the first week it was released and used it with great success up until very recently... after much contemplation, I decided to pass on the HD series. And quite frankly, despite the great videos by people such as Glenn(as always!), I believe I've made the right decision.
Thank's for this video, lovely walk through the HD. I think modeling has come a long way and if adjusted proper it can be hard to hear the difference from the real amp stuff on a recording. Waiting for my HD300 unit right now :)
Glenn, thanks for the video. Certainly gives a bit of an idea of what you get when you pull the pod out of the box. Thanks for the run through. Keep up the good work. Loving some of the blues riffs.
@nitinlkoin1984 Wish I did have a 7 string but since I don't it would be kinda hard. Try the Line6 Elektrick amp model with an EQ to tighten up the very low end.
@nitinlkoin1984 Because usually those 7 string guys want that very tight low end and because it's so low it can tend to get flubby if the amp is not set right.
Hi Glenn, thanks to your great vid I just bought the bean! I wonder if you could tell how you did your Treadplate-preset and what the settings are. It sounds very much like the "Black-Album-Sound" and I guess I`m not the only one interested. That`d be very nice! Thanks!
@extremevideopro Thanks alot for your answer. Unfortunately, I guess you got me wrong. I meant the patch that you use in the very beginning (in the mix) and at the very end of the video. I hope you get what I mean (I haven't written/spoken any English since I left school a few years ago ; ) ). Again, thanks for your help!
thanks for a really good demo! :) too many amateurs making this unit sound crap, its good to hear how it can sound in the right hands! great playing too!
I am confused. What is the big difference between the HD500 and this one except for the pedals? Isn´t the HD500 the reall deal or has this oen here something the HD500 does not have? I record into my interface, which unit would make more sense? Plz help a pro Drummer lost in the Guitarworld :D
@gosu1234 Tobias, yes the HD500 is the top line. The HD400 is just a step down from that but you can record excellent quality guitar tracks from either one. The main difference is the the HD500 allows you to control your sound in a much more in depth manner that the HD400. Plus the are extra I/O features on the 500. They both have the same amps & effects though.
@extremevideopro There's bigger differences than that. The 500 has more effects, has dual tone and allows 8 simultaneous effects over 4 for the 300 & 400. 500 is also the only one with Variax digital connection and XLR input for mic. There's a HUGE amount of things that the 500 has that the others don't.
Hey Glenn, I love all your vids. Very insightful and it's always a pleasure to listen to you play. I just had a quick non-guitar related question. I was curious as to what drum samples you use to record with. They're nice.
@Klif Thank you Cliff. I use ToonTrack Superior Drummer. It's probably one of the best drum software samplers on the market right now. They have been used on many platinum selling hit songs believe it or not. They sound damn good right out of the box but a slick operator can tweak them to sound enormous.
Hey dudes.... I just purchased this product today. I am highly interested in learning how to achieve a nice Asking Alexandria/ Miss May I type guitar tone with this product. If anyone can assist me with this please INBOX me and give me some input. It would be much appreciated!
podhd with a custom 24, u can't go more versatile than that :P would you suggest the podhd for playing through an amp or computer speakers and ocassionaly recording? or is it completely focused on recording? thanks in advance
Anyone else feeling that Line 6 make too much of a habit of abandoning existing customers for new product lines?? When is the last time Line 6 sent out an update for the Pod XT, Im an X3 user and dont wanna be left out of the update loop!!
I. S/PDIF: Does this provide better/trouble free recording then say USB that often seems to have issues? And if so are you going directly into mic/in of sound-cardrd or some other low latency input/interface to laptop or desktop DAW?
II. If I pre-order I'll be replacing my SVMKII but keeping my SVMKII SB to gig with. In the brief time you've had with the POD/HD are there any issues you encountered that would be a serious drawback thus making me regret my trade? =)
@Apologist68 I find the SPDIF to be the best quality. As far as being trouble free, yes it is. For the recording of this video I went from the HD SPDIF right into my low latency computer audio interface.
@extremevideopro Thank you. I hate to trouble any further but I have one last question for you: When using S/PDIF what is the chain order?
By this I mean do you just go directly from the PodHD into your desktop or laptop'sound-cardrd or do you plug intfire-wirere type device to avoid latency issues. I would assume you could go direct to mic input osound-cardrd since the PodHD at this point is acting as the midsound-cardrd interface is this correct and thus latency isn't an issue?
@Apologist68 My audio interface is hardware based. So I have a card inside my computer that has a break-out box. The SPDIF connection is located on the card itself so I go directly from the POD digital out right into my digital in on my sound card.
@extremevideopro Interesting . Well I appreciate your timely responses. I'll have to look into perhaps replacing my card with one that accepts that sort of input. For now I will have to rely on USB 2.0. I will likely pre-order the desktop unit and use my Short-board MKII as a controller ditching my old SVMKII since this seems to be an ideal all in one package for me and less gear to lug around. Thanks for the info.
Glad to see you're still doing the demos. However, I'm pretty dissapointed with the newer PODs(HD's). While they may have a few updates and tweaks here and there, they're not even close to the X3 Live. The best tone on this demo was the one you created! All the stock settings are crap. And to think I went out and spent almost 600.00 for the HD500......I'm just glad I kept the X3. Maybe in time I'll get some good tone dialed in on the HD500, but for now it's all X3 live my friend.
Good to hear you say this. I've been waffling on going HD...but the relatively few number of amps have kept me at bay. I'm actually lost back and the XTLive and didn't even graduate to X3. I did all the upgrades to get the amp and effects packs and have been really satisfied with the tones. Maybe I should make the leap to X3 though...instead of the HD.
Hi Glenn. Really enjoy your playing and the POD HD500 tones... I assume you record these direct off the POD XLR, or mic'd through an amp. My question for you is -- do you have any tips for getting these incredible tones through a PA system. I play at a church which has has an awesome 33 kilowatt Electro-Voice system (like they use for Bluesfest in Ottawa) and a Yamaha M7CL board -- but the PA system as nice at it is always messes with my tone, making many patches sound tinny and distant.. R.
@richardwhite2007 Richard, the best tip I can give you is to use as little effects as possible. If you are using a digital modeler make sure the output mode is set to that of direct studio recording. If you are using the POD HD series just don't put many effects like reverb or delay. This can give you that "distant" effect you are talking about. What sounds good in your headphones may sound horrible in a PA system so you have to be careful when adding effects to your amp sound.
@extremevideopro Thanks Glen... I was coming to this conclusion also... I find it a little disappointing though - when things sound so great through the headphones but have challenges through the PA.. Keep up the good work on your web site/videos!
Do you know when the amp models update will be available?, because I just updated my HD500 to firmware version 1.22 (the newest) and I still have 16 amp models
Still sounds like a typical Line 6 pod. I've got the XT, and I tired it out long ago. The bar has been raised on modelers by the likes of other companies (such as Fractal Audio), but Line 6 seems content with being down in the bottom tier. Even their amps have been outdone by the likes of Peavey with their Vypyr and Vypyr Tube series, simply because Peavey didn't digitally model their amps or stompbox effects...they used analog circuitry to replicate them, and a digital interface to access them.
I still don't know if I want this. Going from 70+ amp models to 22 would be hard. Especially since I use my X3 for bass a lot and this doesn't seem to have bass models. I even find myself using those weird Line 6 models which this also doesn't seem to have.
is this meant to replace a multieffects pedalboard (like the POD X3 Live or HD500) for PC recording? or is it meant to work along with them? Beacuse I find it pretty cool and useful, but I already have a Multi Effects Processor and don't want to by a product that might be useless for me. Thanks
One factor you might consider is that it's the floor model and most likely 50 people tweaked it's settings. Every time I try out a board I look up it's factory reset procedures and go from there.
I had a bit of trouble getting a feel for the amp model demos. Almost like they were getting drown out by the camera mic in the room. Especially with the fender models.
May be another problem that influences the stuffy sound is the PRS with 24 frets. The neck pickup coil wounds are compensates because of rear position. This is because I love the neck pickup of my PRS Singlecut with 22 frets.
I tried the hd300 at a music store through headphones and it sounded terrible the eq barely responded it was fuzzy and it clipped a lot. I know it can sound better just by watching this video and others........ what was i doing wrong?
Sounds weird like if the tone knob of guitar was all on low frequencies. The worst tones was the normal channel of Fender Deluxe and Twin Reverbs, nothing seems with original amps and the vibrato channel of the firmware update v1.3 are very weaks. May be the recording... I dont know, but my POD X3 is better. I will waiting the Rack Mount release to see if the processor is upgraded too. Perhaps Boss GT-11 Pro when available...
Glenn, you are an amazing musician. You are a master of styles. One video you have a great smokey blues feel, next a great acoustic vibe, then an amazing fusion player and a full blown intense metal riff and shred master. GREAT DEMO. Thumbs up if you agree more demo's should be like Glenn's.

richardwhite2007 10 months ago
@richardwhite2007 Richard, the best tip I can give you is to use as little effects as possible. If you are using a digital modeler make sure the output mode is set to that of direct studio recording. If you are using the POD HD series just don't put many effects like reverb or delay. This can give you that "distant" effect you are talking about. What sounds good in your headphones may sound horrible in a PA system so you have to be careful when adding effects to your amp sound.
extremevideopro 10 months ago
@extremevideopro Thanks Glen... I was coming to this conclusion also... I find it a little disappointing though - when things sound so great through the headphones but have challenges through the PA.. Keep up the good work on your web site/videos!

Cheers Glenn!!!!
You and POD HD ROCKS!!!!
Why Line 6 don't put PAD for Active Pickups on Desktop PODHD?

Do you know when the amp models update will be available?, because I just updated my HD500 to firmware version 1.22 (the newest) and I still have 16 amp models
dirtyglam75 10 months ago

boy, I just love PSR guitars.
FCValle 10 months ago
hey awesome video! can you upload your patches on custom-tone..? i guess they should work with the hd500 as well, seeing as the interface is the same
raginghormonez 10 months ago
@raginghormonez Hey Anand, yes I plan to do that.
extremevideopro 10 months ago
Still sounds like a typical Line 6 pod. I've got the XT, and I tired it out long ago. The bar has been raised on modelers by the likes of other companies (such as Fractal Audio), but Line 6 seems content with being down in the bottom tier. Even their amps have been outdone by the likes of Peavey with their Vypyr and Vypyr Tube series, simply because Peavey didn't digitally model their amps or stompbox effects...they used analog circuitry to replicate them, and a digital interface to access them.
WarmothGuitarist 10 months ago
I still don't know if I want this. Going from 70+ amp models to 22 would be hard. Especially since I use my X3 for bass a lot and this doesn't seem to have bass models. I even find myself using those weird Line 6 models which this also doesn't seem to have.
It does sound good though.

@mikepatton3 Good point!!
extremevideopro 10 months ago
is this meant to replace a multieffects pedalboard (like the POD X3 Live or HD500) for PC recording? or is it meant to work along with them? Beacuse I find it pretty cool and useful, but I already have a Multi Effects Processor and don't want to by a product that might be useless for me. Thanks

Hi Glen, like always... great video! :)
Do you think that it makes sense to sell my POD X3 for buy a POD HD?
Are there so much sound difference between the two PODs?
Ciao

Would this be the sound I'd hear if i'd play with headphones?
AlvisLiquid 10 months ago
@AlvisLiquid It would sound better because with headphones you wouldn't hear the pick noise from the guitar like you can hear in this video.
extremevideopro 10 months ago
do you or are you capable of doing this type of thing for other companies and effects? if so would you be interested in doing one for the Boss gt10?
prototypep4 10 months ago
@prototypep4 I have already done several of these types of video on the Boss GT-10.

One factor you might consider is that it's the floor model and most likely 50 people tweaked it's settings. Every time I try out a board I look up it's factory reset procedures and go from there.
upsallysskirt 10 months ago
I had a bit of trouble getting a feel for the amp model demos. Almost like they were getting drown out by the camera mic in the room. Especially with the fender models.

Hey Glenn, great performance, nice gig !!!
fernandosantucci 10 months ago
May be another problem that influences the stuffy sound is the PRS with 24 frets. The neck pickup coil wounds are compensates because of rear position. This is because I love the neck pickup of my PRS Singlecut with 22 frets.
fernandosantucci 10 months ago
I tried the hd300 at a music store through headphones and it sounded terrible the eq barely responded it was fuzzy and it clipped a lot. I know it can sound better just by watching this video and others........ what was i doing wrong?
JamesPaterson2395 10 months ago
Sounds weird like if the tone knob of guitar was all on low frequencies. The worst tones was the normal channel of Fender Deluxe and Twin Reverbs, nothing seems with original amps and the vibrato channel of the firmware update v1.3 are very weaks. May be the recording... I dont know, but my POD X3 is better. I will waiting the Rack Mount release to see if the processor is upgraded too. Perhaps Boss GT-11 Pro when available...
fernandosantucci 10 months ago
Glenn, you are an amazing musician. You are a master of styles. One video you have a great smokey blues feel, next a great acoustic vibe, then an amazing fusion player and a full blown intense metal riff and shred master. GREAT DEMO. Thumbs up if you agree more demo's should be like Glenn's.

Glenn... What`s the difference of this bean to the HD500? Just a few outputs and a expression pedal?
Practus01 10 months ago
@Practus01 The "Bean has the same GUI as the 500. It just doesn't have all of the I/O's like on the 500.
extremevideopro 10 months ago
hey Glenn do u still have your hd500? was thinking about selling mine :)
