So my guess is Gman sent you to another sub way and changed the universe so that the Combine came to earth and destroyed everything. That is the war Gman offered you at the end of HL1

@supersmashbro596 I think that G-Man is neither a bad guy nor a good guy. He's clearly not (entirely) human, but I based on his interventions that both help and hinder the broader human cause (and Gordon in particular), I'd say he is representing an as yet unknown faction.

Maybe his perspective is so utterly different to anything we could fathom that issues of good and bad don't come into it.

@adamtried "Rise and shine" is a VERY common expression for waking people up in the morning, not just soldiers. "Wake up and smell the ashes" is just a play on "wake up and smell the coffee," referring to the current state of the world.
