I hope you have a damper diode across the solenoid coil, or it has one built in. When the power is removed from the coil it can act just like a car coil and send damaging voltage back through the circuit, eventually frying the 555. A standard 1N4001 across the coil, opposite of the supply voltage polarity, will protect everything.
Search Youtube for more videos showing the 555 circuit. Also search the web for a 555 timer calculator. It is very easy once you get into it. If you can't solder, you can still do it with a bread-board. GOOD LUCK.
Very nice. I tried to emulate your original design inside of a toe pincher with a drill and a chain, but unfortunately 1. it was not variable speed and spun like mad once the trigger was fired and 2. I don't weld and the chuck wasn't strong enough to hold the chain for more than a few seconds. Next year when I have time to start anew I may try a fan or wiper motor and try again.
where and how much money was that timer?

Good point... I think this SMC solenoid has a built in diode, but if it doesn't I will add one. THANKS!
