wow! this was really interesting, i had no idea about that team's tradition, let alone that bit of NZ history. thanks for sharing this! :D from that story it seems to me that the european interaction with the indigenous people there was a bit different from their interaction with the indigenous people of the americas...? thats very interesting.
I enjoyed your video. Thank you for the story. I love All Blacks' Haka and I get goosebumps every time I see it. But I didn't know about the story. I knew the meanings of the words some how but thought that didn't make sense:-) Now it does, thanks to you.
G'day, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I learned Japanese at Uni in NZ as well, so if I did it, I'm sure you can do it too. I think Japan is great for Kiwis, so definitely, get into the language!
I really enjoyed watching this video, I played Rugby in school as it was part of our PE class .. it got really rough since our coach was once a german champion in Rugby and played for the youth national team too afaik.
He showed us tapes of the All Blacks and the Haka, I remember how impressed I was.
Rugby is a tough sport, I never ran so much in my life haha.
Haha, I play as well - I always tell people that you prepare physically for rugby in one of two ways. You get big enough to stand and fight, or fit enough to run away. I run ;)
I think the haka encapsulates a lot of what is so great about the sport - if you think about it, it would be illegal to do most of what you do in a game in any other context, and at the end you shake hands, share a beer and are mates. Glad you enjoyed this!
That was a totally awesome story! I'm amazed how you're such a great storyteller, you should do this kind of job instead of being a DJ, unless you're a storyteller DJ (^ω^) I've never ever seen a match of rugby though so you'll have to excuse me as I didn't know neither the team or their dance before but now that I know I wanna watch them!
Cheers! Rugby is a great sport, and the hakas, not just of NZ, but also Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and other countries are a magic part of it. It is well worth looking up to check out.
Glad you liked it - it's a fantastic culture, not just of Maori and not just of NZ, but it is a big part of world rugby. It is great to be able to help people understand it.
Ha, cool! Aoyama high?! What position? I play flanker (no.6) and lately also referee university and open league matches. I hope you enjoyed playing it a bit.
Hehe, that's a very good observation. Actually, the letter "r" and "wh" in Maori correspond exactly to the "r" and "f" in japanese, which both don't exist in exactly the same form in Englsh. The Maori "wh" is made by blowing like you would a candle. It comes out sounding like "f" but your mouth is doing something different which is why it was standardized as "wh" instead. Of course this is very convenient for kiwi schoolkids who often will say "mai whaka" EXTRA loud ;)
Haha, that view is understandable, but the haka is a sign of respect and a challenge in Maori culture, so it is actually quite the opposite. It's part of the mystique that adds to the all blacks; playing them is different to other matches. Facing the haka really brings home that you are playing the top level of rugby in the world. When it's done right, both teams play the best rugby you will ever see.
Hey there! I just discovered this channel last week, so I hope you won't stop any time soon! Very informative and motivational for those of us studying Japanese. Keep it up and thanks! :)
Glad you liked it mate - I think for the Bledisloe, it is just one of those games that NZ feels it needs to win more than the Aussies. No worries, you did a good job knocking over the English on the weekend, and will probably still take out the next World Cup ;)
Thanks man, as a Kiwi with a home in Australia, I like to think I can speak without too much bias to completely agree. I'm from the North Island but my wife and I got married and had a fantastic honeymoon travelling around the south.
That is a great vid - I've never seen a Rapa Nui "hoko" before, but you can see it is Polynesian, just like NZ, Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. Very cool. Thanks for this - I'm going to add the link to the video information!

Used to live in NZ but didn't know what the Haka meant.
I always thought "Ka mate" meant "You shall die". Very interesting.

Wow, really interesting Hiko. I had no idea what it meant. What about the other types of haka? Do they also have background stories like this one?

sjh23inct33 1 year ago

Dang though, your katakana pronunciation is really smooth; whenever I say anything in katakana it is always so blocky and rough
