  • Used to live in NZ but didn't know what the Haka meant.

I always thought "Ka mate" meant "You shall die". Very interesting.

  • Wow, really interesting Hiko. I had no idea what it meant. What about the other types of haka? Do they also have background stories like this one?

  • @Hikosaemon

  • Dan carter

  • Rugby rocks. Beyond comparison.

  • wow! this was really interesting, i had no idea about that team's tradition, let alone that bit of NZ history. thanks for sharing this! :D from that story it seems to me that the european interaction with the indigenous people there was a bit different from their interaction with the indigenous people of the americas...? thats very interesting.

  • all whites w-cUp出場

  • I enjoyed your video. Thank you for the story. I love All Blacks' Haka and I get goosebumps every time I see it. But I didn't know about the story. I knew the meanings of the words some how but thought that didn't make sense:-) Now it does, thanks to you.

  • cool! Thanks for telling that it was very interesting.

  • My pleasure!

    Peace

  • Hello from Rotorua ^_^

    Thankyou for this wonderful video

I hadn't heard this story until now

    I'm learning Japanese at Uni

Hopefully one day I can be a J vlogger like you : )

  • G'day, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I learned Japanese at Uni in NZ as well, so if I did it, I'm sure you can do it too. I think Japan is great for Kiwis, so definitely, get into the language!

    Peace

    Peace

  • Wow this was so interesting!! : D Thanks for teachin' me something new today, Hiko : 3

  • Haha, the pleasure is all mine!

    Peace

  • I really enjoyed watching this video, I played Rugby in school as it was part of our PE class .. it got really rough since our coach was once a german champion in Rugby and played for the youth national team too afaik.

He showed us tapes of the All Blacks and the Haka, I remember how impressed I was.

Rugby is a tough sport, I never ran so much in my life haha.

  • Haha, I play as well - I always tell people that you prepare physically for rugby in one of two ways. You get big enough to stand and fight, or fit enough to run away. I run ;)

I think the haka encapsulates a lot of what is so great about the sport - if you think about it, it would be illegal to do most of what you do in a game in any other context, and at the end you shake hands, share a beer and are mates. Glad you enjoyed this!

    Peace

    Peace

  • have you seen this one?

    /watch?v=d-3M80Tj3pY

I just realized it was a play on haka.

  • That was a totally awesome story! I'm amazed how you're such a great storyteller, you should do this kind of job instead of being a DJ, unless you're a storyteller DJ (^ω^) I've never ever seen a match of rugby though so you'll have to excuse me as I didn't know neither the team or their dance before but now that I know I wanna watch them!

  • Cheers! Rugby is a great sport, and the hakas, not just of NZ, but also Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and other countries are a magic part of it. It is well worth looking up to check out.

  • That was a very informative video! :D I've wondered for a long time what the Haka meant. Thanks for explaining!

You've probably seen this, but this is, by far my favorite rendition of it....

    /watch?v=oulQwIP9VQQ

  • My pleasure - and yes, I LOVE the gingerbread man haka!

  • Awesome ^_^ I liked the story and I liked how you presented it. I will be sure to look for the Hakas when a rugby match comes up.

  • Glad you liked it - it's a fantastic culture, not just of Maori and not just of NZ, but it is a big part of world rugby. It is great to be able to help people understand it.

  • That was really interesting, you're a great story teller. :)

I think I learnt more from your video than my whole contiki trip in NZ! :P

  • Ah, I think you should have tried the con-hiko trip instead ;)

    Glad you enjoyed it.

    Peace

  • lol, that's such a dad-joke :P

  • I guess every joke I tell from now on is going to be an 親父ギャグ

Finally, at last I have a good excuse!!!

    Peace

  • Excellent story man...

  • Thank you so much for the subtitles! ^_^ [x]

  • My pleasure, I put them on every vid to help people out ;)

    Peace

  • Thanks for the explanation of the Haka. I played rugby for Aoyama High School in Tokyo this last summer.

  • Ha, cool! Aoyama high?! What position? I play flanker (no.6) and lately also referee university and open league matches. I hope you enjoyed playing it a bit.

    Peace

  • Yeah, I played outside center . I did enjoy it very much and Happy birthday Hiko!!

  • Oh my god, Hiko-san, that was great! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks a lot for sharing the great story, thanks a lot for the double subs, too.

    You are the man!

  • Always my pleasure and thanks again for the help on the kanpai collab!

    Peace

  • Hey! You are a good story teller! It reminds me, many years ago, when my dad used to tell me stories as nice as that one.

  • I love this comment.

    Thanks very much :)

    peace

  • Nice, now I now the origins to the Ka Mate as well as the words :P Great video!

P.S. Is the "wh" in whakawhiti pronounced like an english "f"?

  • Hehe, that's a very good observation. Actually, the letter "r" and "wh" in Maori correspond exactly to the "r" and "f" in japanese, which both don't exist in exactly the same form in Englsh. The Maori "wh" is made by blowing like you would a candle. It comes out sounding like "f" but your mouth is doing something different which is why it was standardized as "wh" instead. Of course this is very convenient for kiwi schoolkids who often will say "mai whaka" EXTRA loud ;)

    peace

  • Nicee! Thanks for sharing that story

Dang though, your katakana pronunciation is really smooth; whenever I say anything in katakana it is always so blocky and rough

  • Hehe, it was easy in this case because the Maori words I used are pronounce almost exactly the same in Japanese as in Maori. Keep at it!

    Peace

    peace

  • Thank you so much for this explanation of the Haka. Now I have a meaning there, its not so mysterious when I see New Zealand play next.

  • My pleasure ;)

  • Awesome video!! Rugby is pretty big here in Ireland too but we'll never be as good as the all blacks xD

  • Cheers! Rugby is probably bigger than religion in NZ but we don't win all the time. Good luck against the aussies this weekend!

    Peace

I always thought they must be saying something like "We are strong and mighty! You guys suck! We will defeat you!"

  • Haha, that view is understandable, but the haka is a sign of respect and a challenge in Maori culture, so it is actually quite the opposite. It's part of the mystique that adds to the all blacks; playing them is different to other matches. Facing the haka really brings home that you are playing the top level of rugby in the world. When it's done right, both teams play the best rugby you will ever see.

    Peace

  • god ur smart, i'll probably never be able to speak as good as u..*sigh*

  • Awesome!

  • Hey Furetosan! Glad you liked it, thanks!

    Peace

  • Hey there! I just discovered this channel last week, so I hope you won't stop any time soon! Very informative and motivational for those of us studying Japanese. Keep it up and thanks! :)

  • My pleasure. I do the bilingual captions basically thinking "what would I have wanted to see when I was learning Japanese?"

It's nice to get feedback that the extra effort is worth it ;)

    Peace

  • Great explanation!

  • Thanks, glad you liked it!

    Peace

    Peace

  • Cool story mate...would have been better if Oz one in the end though lol ; )

  • Glad you liked it mate - I think for the Bledisloe, it is just one of those games that NZ feels it needs to win more than the Aussies. No worries, you did a good job knocking over the English on the weekend, and will probably still take out the next World Cup ;)

    Peace

  • New Zealand is sure one of the most beautiful countries in the world..

The south island is breath taking!

  • Thanks man, as a Kiwi with a home in Australia, I like to think I can speak without too much bias to completely agree. I'm from the North Island but my wife and I got married and had a fantastic honeymoon travelling around the south.

    Cheers mate!

    Peace

  • Very informative video, thanks a lot m8.

This video may be of your interest

    /watch?v=UNXHESOR6x0

It's the Hoko performed by the Easter Island Football Team

    Cya Mate!.

  • That is a great vid - I've never seen a Rapa Nui "hoko" before, but you can see it is Polynesian, just like NZ, Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. Very cool. Thanks for this - I'm going to add the link to the video information!

    Peace
