I can confirm that they did use it in the 80s, as I remember this being used for a few years from the time I began receiving Philly stations via cable from the NYC market.
I remember the "Late Show" theme from the early 70's on WCAU. It was bright, blue stars travelling toward the viewer with Barry White's "Love's Theme" playing in the background. That would be great to see again.
Wow, I thought I was the only one to remember that. I also think the same theme was used for the WCAU Afternoon Movie. I also would love to see it again.
Yeah..I was young but when I was allowed to stay up late, I really remember vividly that music with the bright blue stars floating by. Maybe it will appear on You Tube one day! Up in New York they had this awesome Late Show theme going around that time as well
Not that I know of. I.I.N.M., WBBM and KNXT/KCBS had used what WCBS used for "The Late Show." The only question mark is KMOX during CBS's ownership of that station. This one appears unique to WCAU.
@wmbrown6 KMOX-TV in St. Louis re-branded their all-night movies "The Bijou Picture Show". They were sold by CBS in 1986 and changed their call letters to KMOV, and no longer shows late night movies.
@dandydonaldo - I did find out, subsequent to my query, that KMOX, prior to adopting "The Bijou Picture Show" title, had indeed employed the "Late Show" (and "Late Late Show") branding that the other CBS O&O's had employed.
All of the 80' finals were live in Philly. It would be unheard of to have a championship game blacked out in the home city because it didn't sell out.
When the rivalry was at it's peak, the NBA always scheduled Boston and LA to play the Sixers Sundays on CBS at least once, sometimes twice a season, and those games were always sold out. The only case I can remember was a Friday night playoff game vs Boston or Milwaukee were the game was tape-delayed on WCAU until 11:30pm because it wasn't sold out.
Really can't say about the 70's, but the Eagles have been on TV almost every Sunday since Buddy Ryan took over in 86. (except when the Cardinals came to town, never a sellout)
CBS had the NFC prior to '94. WCAU was the CBS affiliate from 1948 to 1995. The Eagles went in the tank after Dick Vermeil quit in '82. So, the only Eagles home games that were on TV betweem 83 and 85 were games against the Cowboys and other top teams. Most other games were not sold out, thus the blackout, thus seeing "the Sunday Early Show" open at 1pm instead of football.
what is the name of this song?

When did WCAU start using this open?
fanotv 4 years ago
The opening was made in about, say, 1978.
videonut33 4 years ago
Gee, that's pretty impressive if that's the case. I would have said early 80s, but the music certainly seems to match that era (late 70s).

If only the other O&Os used this one. (I'm sure it was on in NYC, but still...)

This looks similar to what KCOP in LA used for one of its movie shows back in the 80s

I saw that open many Football sundays in the early 80's when the Eagles stunk and were blacked-out quite a bit.
