Further, I'm upset with the "change", to be frank. Detroit was a BLANK sheet of paper...we could do what ever we wanted, when we wanted. TRUE...city in decay...look what has transposed though? Look at the strong people and talent this city molded? I see very little now....we had talent oozing out our assess...now look? I hate it...its further in dust and ruin than before in my eyes...industry...pffft! We were comparable to N.Y. underground...if not better! That aspect is fucked now.
Haha....some of the buildings are still looking for tenants? Only thing populated today is yuppt lofts...the city is in an inbetween stage...the artists and musicians that made it "cool" are nearly gone....and "most" suburbanites don't have the balls to live in a city as tough as we are...will be interesting to see the ending result....( I'll be old and gray by the time this happens i'm quite sure)
I love how people blame the government, auto companies, unions, everyone but themselves. LOL... How many of the above do the stupid shit that causes the problems in Detroit? Explain to all please how people walk across deserts, come from other countries, don't speak english, move to the worst neighborhoods and start businesses which then turn the entire area into the best in Detroit? It's all about personal morals and convictions, nobody else can do that to you, you do it to yourselves.
What the hell business would want to move to detroit? All that crime in that city is not attractive to any business. I wouldnt want to build a store or a restraunt much less a gas station in that city. It would either get robbed or burnt down. Detroit is NOT a place for business anymore. Not until it can clean up the crime and get better schools where people would actually want to come back to.
The auto industry and the labor unions are mostly at fault for the condition Detroit is in currently, but let's not forget about Detroit's long and storied history of consistantly electing some of the most corrupt politicians in US history. Coleman Young made Richard Nixon look like George Washington. It's a shame, because I lived in the Detroit Metro area for 20 years, and it was once a great American city; hopefully one day, it can be again.
this is depressing cause detroit and st.louis are hand in hand.
Stl isnt as bad as detroit, but they both are midwest cities that got fucked when all the corrupt politicians came in, and when all the factories when over seas.
All part of the new world order though.
In the 60s it was said i believe by JFK? i cant remeber but it was said that the u.s wouldnt be home to the industry of the world anymore. It would be home to technology. Industry creates middle class. we cant have that
@TheCorbinfanatic thanks for your input, but it really wasnt the answer i was looking for lol. I am wondering if Detroit is a "racey" city. Like if your white and you would like to do a rave party, in the warehouse district, will you get gang mobbed or shot @? Thanx
For the haters, where do you live that's so great that you can talk sh8t? Let's blame anybody who bought a import named vehicle in the past 30 years. Instead of investing the money in your own U.S.A. you gave money to another country who waged war against the U.S. If everything was made, and bought from the U.S. then all cities would be great looking, nice and safe like .....................???
im from detroit and honestly people always say how bad detroit is, but what they dont realize is people really getting money down here. its all about what you're looking for. this is a city for hustlers. its so many ways to make money in detroit, legal and illegal. to be truthful, there are a few good jobs(not many), but u have those people that think a 9 to 5 is the only way (NOT). I never had a job and im doing better than most people with jobs and i dont even sell drugs.
@7mileplainview How do you do well with no job, ever at that? This confuses me a bit, maybe it is just me or you didn't word yourself right, idk. Please explain?
@LordoftheKaty the government has people brain washed into thinking that a job is the only way to survive (NOT). Money is very easily made, u just have to know how to do it, and no i do not sell drugs. The government just wants everybody to think that a job is the only way because they want everybody to pay taxes, and thats something I just dont believe in. On a normal day I can average at least $100 in a few hours (TAX FREE). I make almost $1000 a week (TAX FREE).
Coachwkr: You don't think the white leadership of the auto companies helped bring the city down? Auto was the dominant employer in the city and without auto sector there is no Detroit.
dont overlook what the unions did to GM. they took a mile and never gave anything back when GM started bleeding to death. it wasnt an overnight fall for GM - it was over the course of a couple decades. the union should be ashamed of itself.
look at those huge streets and those grand buildings. detroit is not dead and hopeless yet. it can improve, if its people WILL it. you can throw millions of dollars around, but it will do no good unless the citizens realize its THEY are the future.
@jas22, The auto companies were union busting & planned to move much of their ops. out of Detroit in order to bust the unions, & it was planned before the 1967 Riot & racial nonsense had nothing to do with it.
Detroit went down beginning with the riots in 68, before that it was becoming slowly integrated, yet of course "for sale" signs went up whenever we moved to the nicer areas, a great migration from the segregated housing sections into all directions of the city. White-owned businesses left with the residents, but crime increased with Plant-closings and layoffs, it cost marrigages, kids at home alone, seeking comfort in arms of immorality, angry youth, no self-worth, folk moved, crime didnt,...
Detroit was once one of the great cities in this nation. Look what its black leadership did to this city. Get ready America. With Obama, this is your future.
I think Detroit is known for it's skyscrapers and it's 1920's art deco architecture. I think Detroit has nicer skyscrapers then Chicago and New York, they are very unique. It has a beautiful skyline too, especially at night from Canada!
I get more pussy than ur skate boarding ass any day liitle punk.Ur a kid i'm not going to waste my time with U,U DON'T EVEN HAVE A CAR TO COME TO DETROIT.don't know shit anyway ur playing on the internet.
she said theres not much traffic, what she talkin bout theres no traffic at all, to damn dangerous, even downtown, crazy bums be attackin u and shit, the only thing i saw are busses, bums must be in hiding still or early hibernation
what are you talking about exactly? I spent the last new years eve downtown and it was fun as hell. Of course theres not gona be people out or traffic at 8:30 in the morning on a holiday!
wtf are you talking about i live the suburbs and my dad has worked downtown for 11 years and we are yet to get attacked by "crazy bums" most of the homeless people in Detroit actually have mental disorders because the state facilities for the homeless & mentally impaired got shut down. its actually very sad and most are harmless. we are trying to recover and become a better city but with the auto companies failing & our government being a joke , it is challenging.
i don't see the north side becoming ghetto. there's quite a bit of money in that area. usually during times of crises the rich still find ways to get richer. you see the main problem with detroit is the riots caused a domino effect. our suburbs in detroit are some of the best you'll find in the country because the money is there. a lot would have to happen for the northside of chicago to collapse. if people lose their homes there would be other people to come in and scoop them up.
Poor detroit and its people. They never knew what they have done to themselves and that they had such a chance to turn things around if they really loved the place.
Detroit has been rotting and decaying over time thanks to the Auto industry and most of us are employed by these dealerships. Don't blame us on not loving the city enough for it decaying over decades of time, and get your facts straight. We didn't do shit to ourselves, and we didn't choose for it to be like this.
This is so sad, and the crappy Michigan weather doesnt help. I dont think Detroit will ever recover. My last flight was in/out of detroit to avoid higher prices flying out of the upscale grand rapids airport on the other side of the state. There were buckets on the floor collecting water leaking from the ceiling in MANY places, not just a couple. If you didnt watch, you would get wet, as it was more of a leak than a drip :(
lol upscale Grand Rapids airport? hahaha! Detroit has a brand new airport. McNamara terminal, and North terminal just opened. The Smith (im assuming is what youre talking about) is getting demolished.
hello ,..thanks for showing us around your city, i love videos like this , its the everyday things like this are so interesting , sad also that life is so hard for people there ,with american economy in serious decline or threat of imminent collapse, life here must be very hard for everyday people.....but it has a strange Beauty.
I agree with JWO123, the auto companies have Detroit by the balls....and if they would bring in some decent rapid transit for the metro area, it would revive the whole city.
It's hard to tell who's holding onto whom, the auto companies could move elsewhere for cheaper labor but the current economic state of Michigan makes leaving impossible.
The people don't change because the auto companies didn't require it of them and the companies don't change because they don't have the right people to move forward. The city & the auto companies are like 2 boxers leaning into each other but not doing anythig...they're just waiting for their ref. to step in...
@Chicago48 No, it wouldn't, I am sorry - I would really, really love to believe it would - but, it just wouldn't.

If the metro area would say FU to the automotive companies and put in rapid transit, younger people would be downtown as they have a way to get down there and don't have to have the hassle of finding parking, gas money and debate which car can hold the most people.
Downtown Detroit is just as safe as Downtown Chicago, New York City and LA
People won't live downtown because they don't want to spend 40 mins too drive to the shopping mall or grocery store. Also you can get a house with a yard in the suburbs for the same price as the downtown condos/loft and be 5 mins from the grocery store and shopping mall.
Sorry to say this but as a aussie tourist, when i visited Detroit it had to be one of most disgusting cities in the US i have ever visted. So unsafe, rundown and vile
