It's actually really common throughout asia. I know whenever someone is sick they wear these masks so they don't contaminate other ppl (i guess). I see them everywhere, but they're just plain white masks. Everyone in HK had one on during sars.

I live in Canada, and they are considered 'weird' unless you have bad cough/sick etc. I am a Canadian person, really interested in Korean culture, so I see these things around quite often from friends/dramas. Remember the swine flu? I moved to a new school, and there was supposedly a really bad outbreak of swine flu in that community. Being the idiot I was, I wore one of those masks to school on the first day. I had no friends for 4 months. LMFAO

I've noticed the mask use thing too in the US as well. You're supposed to use it whenever you've got a cold or something infectious, but I guess that's a reflection of some public health/hygiene issues with America considering people kind of just cough/sneeze/etc into the air, or their hands, or clothes and/or everywhere else. No one here wears them! IT MAKES ME SAD!!! I had to wear ugly ones for my allergies when I went to visit my friend in Cali. Everyone thought i was super sick and stayed away from me, wouldn't even take my order at restraints. TT

Now I just got allergy tests...I am allergic to 38 / 40 out door things...I need a cute mask like this to wear so I can go out side feel good, cute and not die.

I don't really see them as weird since I wear it whenever I go out of my house when I'm at Viet Nam. Once you hit the streets, you're bound to meet some dust, especially if you're riding on motorcycles or bicycles, and its there to protect you...so really, its quite normal...

Just to add on, this masks are also used when someone has a flu and wears the mask so as not to spread it around whilst on the bus, train, workplace etc. That is why I think people from countries with this habit (HK, Korea, Japan etc) are incredibly considerate and their culture is really worth learning from.

You guys informed me, in a hilarious way, that they are practical at a certain time of the year for your health. You make learning about the culture in South Korea very entertaining. It might have been since it was Seoul during the summer, but idk. When I was little and actually lived in Korea, I don't think people wore those at all :(
