this song is popular in america and nearly unknown in germany.

if one wants to hear more. the band f.s.k. (freiwillige selbstkontrolle) from munich (bavaria) made a version called pennsyfawnisch schnitzelbank.

this band too is better known in america than in germany, maybe because they often worked together with David Lowery from Camper van Beethoven and Cracker in the 90s.

the word schnitzelbank has nothing to do with schnitzel as piece of meat, but with scraps. it is a woodworking tool.

@hinatarocks88888 I speak German and English, and I can tell you that Animaniacs translations are quite good in German. This song actually cracks me up just as much in German as in English--they play Otto ("Alois" in the German version) as a hilariously exaggerated back-country Bavarian, and the Warners imitate his heavy accent throughout the song. Songs with lots of wordplay are hard to translate, but they succeeded very well in this case.

@hinatarocks88888 it's actually not bad. problem comes from trying to cram 12 syllables of german into 5 syllables of english. Alois says something about ""zu s'umn" - which is, as i recall, a contraction of "alle zusammen", meaning "all together". so yeah, it's not bad as far as television translations go. most of it sounds transliterated coz they had to make the lyrics match the visual stuff.

English and German are similar in many ways - thats why a lot of puns work in both languages. Of course, you still need quite a lot of skill to transfer the humor from English to German. (If you want to know what happens, when you lack that skill -> check out the german versions of The Simpsons or Futurama. They sound like they were translated by Google -.-)
